I lurk here without posting much, but thought i'd let you know aout my experience.

6 weeks ago I got into my GT-R to drop my daughter to school and the engine and transmission lights came on and it only ha 1st, 3rd and 5th gears (how odd ;)).

After driving a few k's and stopping and re starting the car the gearbox worked properly again.

The car was nearly due for a service so I booked it into the dealer and asked them to look into the gearbox fault.

When I picked it up I was told they'd run a full check and reset everything.

It did the same the next day and was also in limp home mode, so was picked up by a truck and taken back to the dealer.

After downloading all the info from the gearbox/car etc to Nissan Aust (and onto Nissan Japan I was told), the dealer was instructed to do a few checks including draining the gearbox to see if anything other than oil came out, and with all this info the decision was made to fit a brand new gearbox.

It surprised me at the time that they didn't try changing electronic things like solenoids etc, or even opening up the gearbox to have a look, but I'm glad they didn't as I thing it would have just dragged on and on.

The gearbox arrived in a crate from Japan last Friday and was fitted this week, with me picking the car back up yesterday.

It is perfect again.

The only time on a track was about 2 hours in the wet at QR with the Dealer.

I've never launched the car.

Nissan Moorooka has been very professional the entire time, I was delivered a loan car when needed and was kept up to date with the progress constantly.

This has in no way lessened my love of the car; to me it is just one of those things.

But it is certainly reassuring that the dealer and Nissan Australia are so easy to deal with.

the dealership had changed hands so they said the warranty was no longer valid.... was quite an ordeal and took 3 months to finalise....

The old tranny would have already been sent off to Japan for analysis if they didn't know what the problem was, maybe they knew where the issue was and knew that the fault was with the gearbox assembly and not with any electricals?

Now go put some milage on the car :)

Why don't you post this stuff on here?

You can't buy an Atom here and anyone would (with half a brain) realise that it's not quite as practical!!!!!

Talk to the guys who track their GT-R's a lot and see what problems they've had.

omg John here we go again....

1: You can buy the Atom here and you will soon be able to get it complied as well (but I will believe the compliance part once I see one complied, I know the guys trying to engineer it now, a lot of work, money and inspections have gone into it and they recon they are on the home stretch). Practicality doesn't matter, if it did then we'd all be in stationwagon hatchbacks.

2: You claim to have tracked your car for only 2 hours in the wet, yet YOUR car needed a new tranny shipped from Japan when your dashboard was flashing with warning faults. It isn't any good having a car that can do those times if you only have 1st, 3rd and 5th gear mate. If I had only tracked my cars for 2 hours in the wet, I sure as hell would be pissed off, I have no idea why you defend Nissan so much when from your first hand experience the car failed without even being driven hard.

The story is on this thread which was posted by Horsey.... look at post #3, that was me being encouraging a few days ago, wish I wasn't so nice now....

Also in regards to the times Nissan gives about the cars.... Nissan said the cars are capable of 3.2-3.3sec 0-100 times back in 2007/2008. I am yet to meet anybody in the whole country that has gotten anywhere near 3.2-3.3sec for a standard car..... this backs me up as well, it has been written by various R35 owners right here in Australia.

http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/topic/270400-0-100kph-times/

I have said it before and i'll say it again, I know almost all there is to know about these cars. I have driven them plenty of times and even came close to buying one for myself at the beginning of the year (it is in AE forums somewhere), if I thought they were that good I would have bought one already, it isn't asif they are exclusive or super expensive. Hopefully the MY11' model will finally be as good as Nissan hypes it up to be, but I highly doubt it as Nissan has Always exagerated with the R35.

PS: hope this tranny doesn't shit itself for you this time... doh.gif

Mate I know what happened to your car

Sounds like his gearbox failure was an unfortunate one in a million scenario. I am sure every car out there has a proportion of one offs where an engine and gearbox has failed for no apparent reason. I drive mine every day and it kicks ass with no issues at all. All I see is alot of jealousy from people that spend 3 times as much on a car to get the same performance. And the servicing costs are not over the top at all. And you can't immediately void the warranty by turning the VDC off. And you can use launch control on the '10 models with VDC on so then you should get the claimed 3.5sec (Australian times) that Nissan have claimed. So much crap floats around on the internet from the uneducated.

The GR6 is a strong transmission, however it DOES have its problems. We make a living out of selling repair parts and designing fixes for them, so have a fair idea of what you can expect if and when something goes wrong. The OP in this thread is hardly Robinson Crusoe when it comes to having issues. Its not one in a million.

Common problems (when they occur) are -

Inadequate lubrication causing valve body contamination and subsequent P0731-P0732 limp mode

Piston seal failures, P0700 onwards codes and limp mode

Four gear synchromesh failure - the scrapnel causes missed shifting on fourth gear and P0731 and upwards codes

Line Pressure/Clutch Pressure sensor failure - P0830 (off the top of my head)

FWD Circlip Failure - catastrophic transmission failure or if you are lucky just a damaged main shaft

FWD transfer shaft Failure - P0700 and onwards.

Oil Pump Failure - Harsh grinding noise

Transmission case failure - as the name describes

We have repaired 2 x GTR transmissions locally in the past fortnight with a selection of these issues, and obviously shipped parts from Dubai through to Hungary (and most everywhere in between) to fix over a dozen in the same period.

The good news is that most of these problems can be avoided with preventative fixes :)

Hmmm, am I the only one confused about this particular post - it says the author is Horsey, but its just weird, sounds like someone else is posting it, like that other dude Kujotk is posting it - is this the same person?

So you are repairing the JDM's, cars without warranty?

I've taken this kid Kujotk's quotes from another website. He pretends he owns all these exotics and they're his dads.

At any opportunity he bags the shit out of GT-R's yet gets on here all nice and friendly!

He's a nasty little bit of gear really.

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
