The only mods I have on my engine are 3" exhaust, pod, wastegate bleed, T3/4 turbo and PowerFC, currently still running the base map. I have a FMIC 'almost' bolted up, but for now the stocker is still in place.

Even with the crappy stock intercooler in place, on 10psi pretty much everything is maxed out. The injectors are on 100.0%, the AFM is reading 5.1V (it's only meant to go to 5V I believe), and this is at almost 1000rpm short of the rev limit. So I'm up for bigger injectors and fuel pump/s (might as well do it properly the first time around), another AFM, and I'm wondering about the longevity of the stock bottom end (seems OK but has done an indicated 170,000km, probably more).

Anyway, next stage is getting the bigger squirters etc, then bolting up an RB30 block. I have a VL turbo bottom end sitting in the workshop with 5 good forgies and one scored bore... so for a minimal outlay (one matching forgie, some machine work and fresh rings and bearings to be safe) I'll have an RB30DET. Sweet.

Anyway, enough from me, just thought it might be of interest :(

is it a ball bering turbo ?

stock zorst manafold ?

internal gate ?

how much power are you putting out on 10psi ? :(

sounds intersting

i just only compleated a rb30 with a rb25 head. very happy with the low down tourqe , definatly a good upgrade in your case, the rb30 bottom end can handle a fair bit of punishment, only recomendation i would have is that you invest in a new bottom end cradle :/

Thanks for the advice, I'll check it out :/ When you say new, do you mean new stock, or new aftermarket?

Yep, turbo is ball bearing. It's nearly identical in construction to the stock R33 turbo except for being steel-wheeled and a damn sight bigger. Yes, it's internally gated.

Have no idea how much power it's putting out, I'm just taking it easy at the moment until I get bigger injectors etc, then I'll do a power run. It's safely making more power than stock though :( The bum dyno tells me that, assuming ~300hp at the engine before, conservatively it'd have to be making 350+ at the moment, on less boost than previously. Don't really know for sure, but I'll let you know once it's been dyno'd.

i ment a aftermarket cradle.

i have been told by a decent workshop they have had problems with the stock rb30 cradle due to the twincam head harmonics. im looking at a nizpro cradle apparently that does the job well :(

i havent had the problem my self. but im fitting a new head to my rb30 so i thought i might as well do the cradle as well,

injectors at full cycle means decent power. well you would wanna think so :/~

just memba. dont get injectors that are beyond your power goal :( larger injectors become a paint at lower revs :P

You are still running the stock default map??

Well no wonder its maxing everything out! as the stock map for the PFC is just designed for the stock turbo.. Amongst other things that the PFC will be controlling is ignition timings, injector pulse, fuel intake, etc. You really should get it all tuned *before* you start lashing out for new injectors, new fuel pump, etc.

my 2c.

Thanks for the info - if you could let me know price etc that'd be excellent :/

predator

Thanks for your input.

OK, here's how I see things - and tell me if I'm wrong, which I probably am :(

The turbo shouldn't change 'too' much how the ECU runs the car, the AFM still tells it how much air it's getting. The AFM is maxing out purely due to the amount of airflow through it, which has nothing to do with the ECU. The ECU just reads the value and uses it in its calculations. I'm not using a MAP sensor so the AFM should still be accurate (until it maxes out).

As for the injectors maxing out, I have absolutely no idea whether there are more variables involved than a 3D map (TPS, AFM, RPM) - perhaps the PFC is picking up much greater airflow, reading less boost than it expects, and pumping fuel in? Dunno, but I can tell it's running far from optimally. Either way I'll take your advice and get it tuned once I've got the FMIC on (hopefully that should be done in the next couple of days), that should ease my paranoia a bit, but I'll definitely be needing bigger injectors/pump/afm anyway due to RB30 plans. Hopefully I'll get some more midrange... :burnout:

U have a nice flat spot at about 3750-5000 rpm? atm? if the answer is yes then. you are ready for the next stage of mods, which includes

1 650x350x125 FMIC

1 6X 800CC INJECTORS

1 CUSTOM MANIFOLD

1 4" EXHAUST

1 TRUST T78

1 55MM EX. WASTEGATE

1 EBC

1 044 FUEL PUMP

1 FUEL REG.

1 SET OF STOCK GTR BOV

1 NEW CLUTCH

1 GOOD ECU TUNE

1 NEW SET OF UNDIES

This should get rid of that flat spot for you

If you think about it, its probably getting more air from your t3/t4 than it expects, therefore dumping more fuel it to keep it all nice and safe. And I've heard the PFC goes for "safety first" with its default map, so that it runs richer than necessary to protect your engine. After all, Apexi would figure the stock map needs to cope with big turbos, etc at least to get you to the tuning shop.

Really depends how much power you're actually putting out atm, but my guess is it just needs tuning before you're really going to know the exact point your AFM and/or injectors max out. But you're definitely right, if you're going for the big power you're gonna need all the mojo very soon :(

You forgot one thing hungry 6

1 VERY GOOD LOOKING NYMPHO FOR THE PASSENGER'S SEAT

That just about sums it up i think?

On a serious note, i'd be getting it to a dyno shop very quickly if i were you. Don't go out and buy anything just yet. Im sure the dyno place would be more than willing to tell you what you need and they'd be even more willing to sell it to you!!

Hehe yeah pretty much - I've completely pulled out the inner guard, and I'm in the process of fabricating a new one. I've also relocated the wiring loom further out of the way. All up it gives me an extra ~1.5" of wheel travel before it hits anything, which is more than enough. btw it's the front right :(

hungry6, I wasn't going to stuff around with piddly little undersized things like the T78. My mate's cousin's uncle's mum reckons I could get two Y2Ks spooling at 1500rpm by using an adjustable cam gear and a Brock Polariser. Is this true? She also said that, with the extra power the car will make with the stickers I'm putting on, those turbos would become a restriction over 6000rpm - except for buying more expensive stickers, what can I do about it?

    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
    • BTW I measured the jack I have, it is 70mm at the saddle but you only have about 700 until it returns to 150mm high at the cylinder so it is good but no magic bullet.
    • My experience with Rising Sun Exports Before agreeing to the sale I tried to do as much research as I could (obviously), his Facebook reviews are 98% and he goes Live at least once or twice a week. I contacted 2 people in the UK who had used him for their imports, both had positive feedback. His explanation and talk through of the import process was thorough, answering any query no matter how stupid it was. It felt as soon as the money was sent, communication dropped off. I asked for shipping updates every 2 weeks or so, not wanting to pester him, he never had any updates. I wasn't informed the car had been dropped off at the port, I only found out by his Facebook story. I asked for the photos taken at the port, knowing he would need some for insurance purposes. I received a few 5 second clips and that's it. When asked again, he said his staff had them. Weeks later I asked again, he tells me he doesn't have any, but does have 50 photos from the original advert. I never received them. I eventually got the documents sent via WhatsApp after I mentioned the port was requesting them. I purchased a CarVX report, to find out the vehicle is a Grade R with recorded accident damage, first recorded in 2017 when it was first auctioned. He never told me the grade, then again I didn't ask. His response was "Grade R means nothing, it wasn't chassis damage". Still, I would have liked to have been informed about it. Jon prides himself on being open and honest when it comes to inspecting cars, it's his main job doing so at the auctions for customers. When the vehicle arrived in the UK I noticed a few little cosmetic issues. It's a 21 year old car so it wasn't going to be mint condition. The side skirts are cracked on each corner and the sealant is failing. The front grill on the bonnet/hood isn't secured very well, mounting studs are missing. Both minor things, but again, it would have been nice to be told. During a Facebook Live walk around video of the vehicle, he mentioned it has a front Whiteline anti roll bar/sway bar. While on the inspection ramp, I noticed the stock item has been installed. When first questioned, his response was "the ARB? Switched? Since when, it never had them". Since sending video and photo evidence I've not received a response. I'm probably being over critical of the overall condition of an old car, but all I wanted was honesty (which he claims to have). I'm aware I wasn't his only customer, he's busy doing XYZ but other reviews praise him for great communication with regular updates and photos, I felt I didn't receive the same treatment.
