Hi All

Looking to get some exhaust work done to my R34 N/A

I'm leaning towards a Varex twin tip cat back,

has anyone got this system set up & if you do what do you rate it?

Is it loud when open, is it stock quiet when closed?

What's the price for something like this? etc...

About 2 years ago I had a 3" turbo back exhaust put on my GTT and decided to go with a 3" twin tip varex. In my opinion they are bloody brilliant. It is loud when open but not LOUD LOUD as you'd get from a cannon or so on. When closed it is definitely as quiet as stock.

However...... bear in mind, your car is N/A. You don't have a turbo, which acts as a muffler in itself. So if you run the varex on its own it would definitely be louder and maybe drone more than on a GTT. You may need a mid muffler somewhere along the exhaust and then have the varex on the end. Hopefully there is someone here who is running one on an N/A who can correct me... or confirm it.

But yes, the actual varex unit itself is great and still works perfectly for me 2 years on. Good quality. The remotes are a little fragile so if you decide to get one, take care of them. From memory the muffler set me back $400 or so. Might be a tad cheaper now? The only downside I can think of is if you drive around with it open the whole time, only the right tip will get carbon build up on it and will look darker (only on the inside, outside is still bright chrome). So you kind of need to run it shut for a while too so the left tip can build up and match the colour..

I have ordered a camera mount of eBay and when it arrives I am planning on recording a video of driving with it open / closed.

8"x4" centre mufler (its the biggest they could fit)

twin tip varex.

it's awesome dude, when its open it sounds sweet, its loud but not so loud that you're going to be heard 10 blocks away and when it's closed it's dead silent :)

don't make the mistake i did and not get a centre muffler, it was the most disgustingly loud exhaust, not to mention it sounded like absolute sh*t haha

if you go somewhere and they tell you there is "not enough room for a centre muffler, only a hot dog" go somewhere else, coz there definately is !

mines made of mild steel and is mandrel bent (press bent is sh*thouse) and cost me 1200 all up including wiring of the varex.

ps. in regards to what r34mac said about the right tip getting more build up of crap, this was true on the older versions where the valve was situated behind the right tip, now its smack bang in the middle so don't have to worry about this problem, also the remotes are a bit better than they used to be too :)

I'm convinced that I'll get the Varex muffler now it sounds like a pretty good quality system for your money.

sounds like a centre muffler is mandatory though for an N/A.

Anyone got an idea where you can buy these muffler's other then ebay?

i got mine through the guy who did the system for me, pretty much go to any exhaust or auto shop that deals in xforce and they will be able to get it for you.

don't buy off ebay because then you're not covered by warranty in case something should go wrong !

I'm running a single 3" cannon on my R33, sounds great when open and quieter than stock exhaust when closed. However in terms of power you lose heaps when running it closed and try and put your foot down.

The whole catback system I paid $650 for installed, I think the tip alone is around $300-350 ish...

As stated anyone who deals with Xforce can get these in for you.

Not trying to start a fight here.

But Varex mufflers are the most expensive POS ever...actually same can be said for ANY X-force product.

A real muffler and not some made in china pos with a flappy valve thing would have sounded so much better without the need for a centre muffler.

Things like Remus/Borla/Hooker/Magnaflow etc are properly designed to flow and quieten rather than just be a tin can with some perforated tube badly welded in the centre.

So while some of those brands are expensive (the hooker aerochamber is only $100 bucks) would be cheper than the Varex and would have saved you needing to buy a 2nd muffler.

Not bagging you car at all just a tip for young players.

Also note the Varex/other flappy exhaust things are illegal as it wasnt fitted OEM

Have you had a Varex before Zebra? 18 months and still running great in my car, still sounds as good as the HKS muffler I had before...no power loss. Given the twin tip Varex is actually just a straight pipe when it's open, more important is how the rest of the exhaust system is setup IMO. X-force are the last company I would associate with expensive though...bar Varex which is a unique product, their stuff is some of the cheapest you can get off the shelf.

I personally havent had a varex muffler...i simply refuse to use any X-force products anymore, they are cheap for a reason.

2 mates have have 2 1/2" dual X-faorce exhausts on V8 commodores, the mufflers fell to bits within 6 months, another mate had a dual stainless 3" exhaist on his VT2 GTS and the welds broke/cracked in two spots.

I had an X-force 3" dump on my 33 and had to modify it to fit because none of the flanges lined up and it leaked so I had to re-weld the cat flange.

So maybe the Varex is ok (it would want to be for the price) but give it another 18 months and see how the little servo goes with the heat and grime etc.

If it lasts well thats good, but I will not use one, I would still rather a propper exhaust rather than relying on a flappy valve thing.

Get what you pay for I guess, the same goes with the JustJap dump pipes and the ones on eBay. None of them ever line up perfectly and almost always require modification. That said, I have an X-force high flow cat too and that's been fine. I hardly use the valve anyway, I bought the muffler mainly because it's one of the few mufflers on the market that looks like a better looking version of the standard twin tip exhaust muffler, therefore more cop friendly even if you don't use the valve.

Again this was the twin tip design, the single cannons are different and I would not use one personally, but I did like the redirection design that the twin tip uses (straight exhaust out one tip, redirected through the other tip) and it truly is the quieter than stock with the valve shut...which no aftermarket muffler will give you the choice of having. And that's what it comes down to, that no matter how shit a Varex is (and it isn't IMO), it's still the only one of it's kind out there - we won't even bring up the Apexi valve lol.

Twin tip it, 90% of cannons are done disgracefully. Subtle twins always look good. If I had a free kill it would be the the first motherf**ker who ever put an unnecessarily large exhaust pipe on his car and started that bullshit trend.

    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drive beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?

    • Hello!  i just finished manual swaping my r34 skyline with a r33 rb20de box(RB71C)box  When the car is running it squeaks crazy loud and it was smoking from the gearbox area. The gearbox is fine it was tested. The clutch slave cylinder seems like it doesn't fully releases the clutch.
