I have just wound myself up trying to buy new tyres for my 2010 GTR from our local rip off merchants.

Tire Rack in the US has the Dunlop fronts for $420 a tyre and the rears for $468. But they say, they can not sell them to us in OZ because Dunlop said so?

Our dollar is now worth the same and we are expected to pay MORE THAN TWICE THE FN PRICE!!!!

I would like to shove my old tyres fair up the Dunlop and Bridgestone cartels 'where the god dam sun don't shine'.

Why hasn't anybody on this site suggested bringing in a bulk buy from the US via our fellow GTR website club members in the US and show these god dam FN cartel mongrel FCKRS that there is a thing called free trade. They say the USA is the land of the free, sounds more like the land of bullshit to me!!!!!

Tempe Tyres in Sydney have new R35 bridgestones for $650ea.

After you pay shipping and taxes, plus fitting as well (price above includes fitting) i dare say the savings may not be worth it.

Shipping yes, taxes no as he would be bringing in 2 at a time which is under $1000 attracting no import charges or GST. Thats a saving of $824, then subtract the shipping and fitting which would not even come close to that figure. He would be getting a tyre and a half for free compared to buying them locally.

I buy stuff from the States all the time and it saves me plenty of money.

find someone other than tire rack perhaps?

When you have to buy a set every 10 to 12 months, price does become important.

I just bought 2 Bridgestones (fronts) from Tire Rack and they were about $450 each including shipping etc. That was MUCH cheaper than I could find them anywhere in Australia.

Can you PM me who organised the shipping? cheers.

failing that try Taleb Tyres in sydney (just down the road from tempe tyres funnily enough). They have sorted me out with R35 tyres long ago when it was an effort to even buy any in aus at all. prices are very competitive too. I buy tyres for all my cars there (and yes I currently own 7 cars so it adds up fast!).

Has anybody tried NON Run Flat tyres on there R35 GTR. By comparison to the Dunlop/Bridgestone RFT cartel on R35 GTR's, It would open up a whole world of grippy extreme performance tyres, without the price fixing?

The softer side walls would give a better ride, more compliance to the road surface and therefore possibly more grip?

Just carry a can of the pump up tyre sealer as per all the M3, M5 & M6 BMW's, if you get a flat.

Any comments????

maybe buying fronts for $400ea US will work out well (+say $100 for shipping) but i doubt you'll get the rears here for under $1000/pair.

If he buys 4 from the US for his quotes price vs buying 4 locally at your quoted price he is saving $824. My point was that if he splits the purchase into 2 packages each package is less that $1000au attracting no extra charges. I just read my post again and yes it wasn't that clear what I was saying :)

I still don't see how you can get a pair of rears here for less than $1000. I think it will be more than that, and attract taxes and duties etc, adding a couple of hundred. Based on this i don't see the saving any more than $300 in total, and even then you have to pay for fitting and balancing (say $100 at best, for all four) so i see the real saving about $200. Not really worth it IMO, considering you can get them fitted tomorrow in Sydney. Unless local availability is an issue, in which case i have bought from tirerack a few times too. FWIW, tempe is $100/tyre cheaper than telebs atm.

Ask Domino as I think this is exactly what he is doing when he changes to his new wheels and tyres.

I don't think you could import a set of rears from tire rack at the moment for less than $1000 landed. Are shipping charges used in the calculation to determine if GST is to be applied? Or is GST applied only if the goods exceed $1000?

GST is only payable if the price of the goods EXCLUDING shipping is over $1000. If so then GST applies to the price INCLUDING shipping....

I'm running non run flats at the moment. Definitely a smoother ride but forget the idea of extra grip unless you spend just as much as the RFTs. Mind you when you do 25,000 kms a year the savings are significant.....

And as for us in SA it pays to use the TIRERACK. We dont have discount suppliers like you guys in Sydney so we'd have to pay for freight from NSW plus still have to pay someone else here to fit them.Locally we still pay more than $1000 a tyre. Dealing with the TIRERACK has been a dream. A friend just bought some 17" Advan semi slicks from them and saved a bundle so it's not just on very expensive tyres that savings can be had, . I'm totally pissed off Dunlop is fighting to save their monopoly. They'll be joining Gerry Harvey soon and having a right old whinge about GST next..... Time to look at getting a container load in guys....

Oh and its not just Tyres, musical instrument manufacturers have been cracking down on internet trade as well in the past 18 months because we were getting in stuff at half the price of what we pay here........ I thought we had a FTA?

And in reply to Zebra, have you ever considered that the reason the OP can afford a $200,000 car is because he looks for savings in everything he spends money on?

    • I got back to Japan in January and was keen to get back on track as quickly as possible. Europe is god-awful for track accessibility (by comparison), so I picked up a first-gen GT86 in December just to have something I could jump into right away. The Skyline came over in a container this time and landed in early January. It was a bit battered after Europe, though—I refused to do anything beyond essential upkeep while it was over there. The clutch master cylinder gave out, and so did the power steering. I didn’t even bother changing the oil; it was the same stuff that went in just before I left Japan the first time. Naughty. Power steering parts would’ve cost double with shipping and taxes, so knowing I’d be heading back to Japan, I just postponed it and powered through the arm workout. It took a solid three months to get the car back on the road. Registration was a nightmare this time around. There were a bunch of BS fees to navigate, and sourcing parts was a headache. I needed stock seats for shaken, mistakenly blew 34k JPY on some ENR34 seats—which, of course, didn’t fit—then ended up having the car’s technical sheet amended to register it as a two-seater with the Brides. Then there’s the GT86. Amazing car. Does everything I want it to do. Parts are cheap, easy to find, and I don’t care what anyone says—it’s super rewarding to drive. I’ve done a few basic mods: diff ratio, coilovers, discs, pads, seat, etc. It already had a new exhaust manifold and the 180kph limiter removed, so I assume it’s running some kind of map. I’ve just been thrashing it at the track non-stop—mostly Fuji Speedway now, since I need something with higher speed after all that autobahn time. The wheels on the R34 always pissed me off—too big, and it was a nightmare getting tires to fit properly under the arches. So I threw in the towel and bought something that fits better. Looks way cleaner too (at least to me)—less hotboy, less attention-seeking. Still an R34, though. Now for future plans. There are a few things still outstanding with the car. First up, the rear subframe needs an overhaul—that’s priority one. Next, I need to figure out an engine rebuild plan. No timeline yet, but I want to keep it economical—not cutting corners, just not throwing tens of thousands at a mechanic I can barely communicate with. And finally, paint. Plus a bit of tidying up here and there.  
    • Nope, needed to clearance under the bar a little with a heat gun, a 1/2" extension as the "clearancer", and big hammer, I was aware of this from the onset, they fit a 2.0 with this intake no problems, but, the 2.5 is around 15mm taller than a 2.0, so "clearancing" was required  It "just" touched when test fitting, now, I have about 10mm of clearance  You cannot see where it was done, and so far, there's no contact when giving it the beans Happy days
    • It's been a while since I've updated this thread. The last year (and some) has been very hectic. In the second-half of 2024 I took the R34 on a trip through Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland - it was f*cking great. I got a little annoyed with the attention the car was getting around Europe and really didn't drive it that much. I could barely work on the car since I was living in an inner-city apartment (with underground parking). During the trip, the car lost power steering in France - split hose - and I ended up driving around 4,000kms with no power steering.  There were a few Nurburgring trips here and there, but in total the R34 amassed just shy of 7,000kms on European roads. Long story short, I broke up with the reason I was transferred to Europe for and requested to be moved back to Japan. The E90, loved it. It was a sunk cost of around EUR 10,000 and I sold it to a friend for EUR 1,500 just to get rid of it quickly. Trust me, moving countries f*cking sucks and I could not be bothered to be as methodical as I was the first time around.
