Dont forget cam gears to, I have heard from basically everyone that they do wonders for a 20, will help bring on boost a little earlier and give you a bit more power. I have some on mine but am waiting till i get a tune to adjust them.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've owned this car for close to 6 years now and have developed a bit of a soft spot for the RB20.

From the reading i've done it seems the 3071 and TD06 seem to be the turbos of choice. Obviously if i want to keep the HKS manifold a Trust TD06 will be out of the question. Does anyone know how the copy TD06 with T3 flange compares to the genuine item?

Interesting point you raise about the cams Roy. It's definitely tricky finding definitive results regarding cams in the RB20. I'm quite sure the 270s are far too large for what i want (although they do give it a mean sounding idle). Would a set of baby cam, say 256 degree poncans offer any advantage over the stockers? Or not worth the money?

Well i have aset of 256 Poncams and if the 10cm housing has a hint of being able to make more power at the expense of response I may throw them in...but only if we see enough improvement to think that all the other bolt ons were all ebing limited by the little 8cm housing on the 20G. The whole thing will only flow as well as the shitiest part and that looks like it could be my small A/R exhaust turbine.

But I will say I think the std cams are just fine. There are all sorts of schools of thought, headwork and cams give power and response....small camas, big cams....everyone thinks they are right. I look at race cars taht still run turbos, and you need to consider they all run restrictors or boost regiulators etc so that messes with things,and who wants to go to that expense only to find they are no better off, or worse off?

Obviously if i want to keep the HKS manifold a Trust TD06 will be out of the question. Does anyone know how the copy TD06 with T3 flange compares to the genuine item?

Why does the HKS manifold rule out the Trust turbo?

TD06-20g L2 seem to work really well on RB20's for decent power...

That turbo is NOT the same as the Trust TD06 L2 that Roy (ran?) and I run....

Other than that I agree with everything Roy said 100%...

If I was choosing now GTX3071 would be my choice....

Yeah it's a copy, but wheels sizes match the genuine ones and there have been quite a few success stories with these turbos as opposed to the old china t70 shitters.

I would steer clear of the gtx3071 for now. Initial gtx results seem to indicate that, yes the smaller wheel is capable of moving as much air as the old next size up gt wheel, but response is lost to do it.

I would stick with the old tried and true 3071, probably a genuine garrett .84 TS housing, not reprofiled ATP .78, on the hks manifold, or just a regular old .63.

Unfortunately there isn't a suitable size BW efr available atm that will bolt up.

Remind me psymon, did you have a t3/t4 drilled manifold or just t3? Some of the bw turbos are skipping the t3 and going straight to t4 footprints (just like hks....)

Interesting, however if you are chasing power similar to what a GT3076 would achieve on ab RB20, I would think the GTX3071 would be more responsive, but not as responsive as the GT3071. (Hope that makes sense)

Actually, the 20G was the more responsive and powerful. Even allowing for the extra few psi I was running. Cars had the same HKS Type S intercooler, i think we even had the same HKS Hyper exhaust, both internally std RB20s. The GT-RS GTSt was actually a GTS4 running in rwd and it did not have cam gears where as mine did. Dyno runs were done on the same day minutes apart

So all things considered, with adjustable cam gears, and a bit more boost the GT-RS in my eyes is a pretty good option if you dont want to mess around with manifolds etc and want the engine bay to look pretty std. Mind you this was a ways ago and my setup now makes 40rwks more with only a bit more boost and leaning in the tune a little more. So the gap would be a bit bigger, but then the GT-RS could be leaned on more for perhaps a similar response

My manifold is drilled for both T3 and T4.

Really? A KKR better then a HKS?

No offence but i always thought KKR were fairly cheap/crappy turbos?

Also whats the go with the Kando Dynamics turbos? Are they any good?

IMO you wont get a drivable/liveable rb20 with 250rwkw, I hated my rb20 when I had only a vg30 on, was so laggy it wasn't funny, I put the standard turbo back on for now, I either will be going a 2530 or rb20 highflow and power goals around the 220rwkw mark, hopefully will be fairly responsive still.

Either way if your gonna spend this money on the 20 you might aswell keep it in the long run as the money spent now could be most of the money for a 25.

so did i , i only put it on because i was trying to sell the car cheaper :) , honestly i was somewhat dissapointed that this was the case.

But why change the manifold?

my bad , i hadn't read the thread properly, i thought he had a std manifold and i thought the link was to a genuine td06l2 , i was referring to change the manifold to suit the trust flange , or buy the china variant as in the ebay thread . keep the manifold

Wonder what the .86 would be like on a RB20 twin scroll, wouldnt be a complete waste as if anything happened could use it on a RB25 or something.

not on a rb20 all they do is rob peter to pay paul in 99% of situations.

How much for your L2 kit,? your car has a lot in it, remember you told us to dial it right back its still running in that mode yeah? pull as much low as possible at the sacrifice of top and mid. i would prob buy it.

There was a Garrett twin scroll GT32 turbine housing getting around for a long time and I'm not sure if its the one ATP sells . I think it was a 0.78 AR T3 flanged thing and the turbos themselves were a GT3267 and GT3271 plain bearing units .

Maybe not perfect housings but at least made by Garrett .

    • Hi, is the HKS  Tower Bar still available ? negotiable ? 🤔
    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.      
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
