I've recently changed my gearbox and the new one came with a longer shifter with a smaller socket and nylon boot. The increased length means that the leather cover no longer fits (lifts the plastic surround) and the gearchange is a longer throw.

Note from the picture that the new shifter (shown on the top) is longer both in the black body and the silver arm as well having a smaller socket. The socket size difference means I can't fit the old shifter back on.

Any ideas as to why there should be different models and how I can go back to the origial setup?

Unfortunately the socket of each is a different size. The original shifter(bottom in pic) has a socket larger than the top socket/bush combined.

The outside diameter of the nylon bush is the only difference I am aware of. We have swapped the nylon bushes over many times.

There is a difference between RB25 and GTR, though, so you may have an RB25 shifter or vice versa.

Let me get this straight, you have changed an RB26/RB25 gearbox for a RB20 one? Why on earth would you do that?

I bought a reconditioned GT-R box with an OS gearset fitted. It came with the longer shifter (smaller bush) already fitted.

I'll double check the socket again, but I'm pretty sure the ID of the bushes are also different (i.e. the sockets are different diameter).

Thanks for your help so far.

the GTR bush should be the large one.

So if it's a GTR box, the smaller bush should not be able to fit the GTR gearbox.

Failing that, take both bushes off and try to swap them, if the larger bush will not go on (requires a lot of force and you need to pop it in at an angle) then go down to your local nissan and buy the RB25 shifter bush which should fit directly (but it's larger like the GTR one so I don't know if you are going to run into trouble there.

I still can't get my head past the smaller bush, it shouldn't have a small hole in there in the first place

that is a weird one! love to know how you sort it out.

I reckon I know what's going on here now.

The shifter that came with the gearbox (which I now assime is either an RB20 or SR shifter) definately accepts a nylon bush around 5mm diameter smaller than my old GT-R shifter as per the above pics.

So....when I have a look at the gearbox socket that accepts the bush, there appears to be a sleeve pressed in that reduces the socket diameter by (yes, you guessed it) 5mm.

So......If this is the case what the previous owner has done is mada a modification that allows a taller shifter (i.e. comes to hand easier from the steering wheel and back) without affecting the throw. Apart from the leather boost sitting now slightly lower, everything works well and changes smoothly.

BTW - I did try to remove the sleeve using long nosed pliers, but it's in there well and good. I'll consider if I try to remove it next time the gearbox is out.

Well I don't know what is going on down your way but the shifter actually goes in to the transfer case (gtr) and not the gearbox as the transfer case bolts to the gearbox, Did you get another transfer case with the box, the smaller bush is for a R34 the larger bush is R32/R33

Referring to the gearbox as a whole unit.

Sry for hijacking the thread.

How difficult/easy is to access and replace this nylon bush - can it be all done from inside the car.

Does this nylon bush require replacing, do they get worn - reason why I'm asking is that I'm just chasing some more "feel" when I'm changing gears and just wodnering if new bush would provide me with a more solid shift-feel.

    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
