Fortunately for me, I have one of both of these, the latter of which needs to be messed with! :devil:

I'm in the process of shoe-horning an RB20DET into a 1976 Triumph 2500 Mk II in order to make the Worlds most-unattractive (yet highly successful) sleeper.

The RB20DET I purchased (ex SSS Automotive) is a near perfect extremely low-km example that is completely void of any signs of modification (a blank canvas if you will).

Just to fit it all under the bonnet I'm going to need to fit a Jun style plenum (as the OEM unit is too tall), and naturally the conversion requires me to fit an after-market intercooler (460x300x76 fits nicely), and exhaust (3" of course).

Being it will be a sleeper of sorts, it may as well make decent power too. So I'm looking at upgrading the turbo, injectors, and ECU as well.

The injectors and ECU I'm going to leave up to my tuner, but for the turbo, I'd like to get as much feedback as I can before I start pricing them up. The car will basically be a part-time work and back runner and for a bit of fun on the weekend at track days/hillclimbs (which means I'll probably go the route of a 2-stage tune with variable boost to save on fuel when using it to commute).

So what does everyone run on their RB20DETs? What's the *fuel consumption like? And what do you mainly use your car for? My goal is 200kW+ atw when running the good tune. Which should still see my 1250kg Triumph running around nearly as economical as it did with the old 2.5L twin-SU equipped inline six it came out of the factory with.

* Fuel consumption has never really been a concern of mine. As you can't go quick without putting plenty of fuel through, but a $1.60+ for BP Ultimate? WTF??

for the rb20det with the std manifold etc in place go for a highflowed rb20 turbo

good power, great factory response and steel components brand new vs 20yr old+ ceramics

for ecu check out nistune for a remap option

for stand alone check out vipec, powerfc

for injectors look at GTR injectors

for plenum look at greddy legit plenum or jun, try to avoid ebay copies

with a good tune and you driving it NORMALLY you can get 400kms to a tank

if you flog it non stop on boost expect 250kms to a tank or less

Not the biggest fan of highflows on RB20's because they are usually too laggy for the power.

Because RB20 heads are different, both the greddy and jun genuine or copy plenums do not fit... There are a few other options but they are all fairly expensive!

I drove an Rb20 with a HKS 2510 and it was one of the most fun packages ever.. sure it didnt have huge peak power but it was so responsive and stacks of midrange! perfect turbo for street/track duties. 2530 is as big as i would go on a 20

a neo turbo will make 200kw easy / will reach 14 psi by 4000 rpm . cheap too . sounds like what id do for your situation . a r33 turbo should reach full boost a bit earlier

I found that after I posted. Great resource!

I especially liked all the: "It would've made more power but a fly landed on the dyno, which affected the balance of my fluffy dice and the figures got botched" type excuses. :dry:

No dont do this....it will be laggy as FCK! Terrible combination.

HKS 2530...should be able to pick up a s/h kit for ~$1500. A little pricey but its the best solution IMO for 200-220kw. Itll be the most responsive.

Oh, and dont forget cams gears.....20's LOVE them.

Yeah WTF, neo turbo is more responsive than a 2530. Neo turbo maxes out around 200rwkw whereas the 2530 can make 230rwkw.

    • Don't even try to run it on the stock ECU if you're going to have the boost controller bring boost above ~10 psi. I've already told you that. If you use the Nistune ECU, you will need to CAREFULLY read the available documentation for Neo tuning, and read some threads on the Nistune forums, to discover the various things you have to do to prevent the ECU from going bananas when the boost is too high. The is a table associated with th boost sensor that must be modified to prevent it from shitting the bed. This is just one of the things that you will need to do to the tune in Nistune, because the Neo turbo ECU will be expecting to see a number of things (such as the TCS) that are not there, and you have to block the DTCs on those. It is totally not surprising to me that you are having the problems that you are, but the solutions to these problems have been known for >15 years. So just get it done.
    • Hi. Sry iam not a mechanic and iam not at the car atm so i dont know 100% but they told they measure those and even try to change those. AFM they have two. Coils are new a they have my old one too. Plugs too. ECU...we have 25 NEO stock and Nistune 25 NEO.   But i dont know if any one those could be the problem and why/if/what can cause this, Only thing they did not check is fuel...but that walbro 255 is new(like 1,5 years)... That fuel pressure gauge idk...but i let them know Any suggestions?   EDIT: how can they know if it is like you say he ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high? Tha car has boost controler
    • Can you clarify what you mean by boost cut, do you mean it misfires both when under load (driving) and when stationary and out of gear? Or does the ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high (boost control issue)? Does it occur at idle with no throttle? When you say "the ECU is OK", what ECU is it and why do you think it is OK? Have you used the NEO ECU, and if so do you have a MAP sensor attached? Same for the AFM, why do you think it is OK? Do you have any way to put a fuel pressure gauge on it (even just a mechanical one between the fuel filter and fuel rail)?
