Help with graphics programs

Hey guys.

does anyone know how to use Discreet Combustion or Alias Maya 5?

i've posted on those graphics forums but the only responses are from those comp./graphics geeks with their technical bullsh/t ........

theres tuts on the net about Maya....but man.....what the hell do u do with combustion??? finsihed artworks look bloody good from users of combustion... but how do u use it? and what is it for??
