Hi all , i recently put an rb25 in my 32 and after putting it in i realised the sump has a fair sized dint where the oil pickup is, im getting plenty on oil preasure acording to my dash but is it posible to have preasure and no flow? i will end up taking it off and fixing it but in the mean time i dont wont it to root my engine.

Well pressure is a measure of restriction to flow... So I don't think you are asking the right question :P

In all seriousness though, they can take a fair whack before it causes problems. How big is the dent?

Get a straw and blow through it until you get 10psi, get a huge 20mm wide straw and blow through it until you get 10psi. Are they both supplying the same amount of air?

So checking oil pressure is not a sufficient test to see if the pickup is working as expected, you really need to take the sump off and check, and if you do that you might as well replace it.

I have had a dented sump for about 6 years and never had any issues. Car was jacked up by a friend at a track day while I was cracking the wheel nuts to check the brakes. Obviously the sump looked like the cross member to him and the weight of the front end on the jack resulted in the sump being pushed up at least 25-30mm. Never realised it for weeks but the car has never had any oil issues so the damage internally must be minimal. I figured I just got lucky but monitor the pressure gauge religiously when giving it the boot.

Something I've always wondered was where the oil pickup is located in relation to, say, the sump plug? Does anyone have a pic of an RB25 with the sump off?

got myne off atm, if i remember i'll take a pic while im putting it back together.

also, you'll actually bend the pickup tube before blocking it as it has a fairly solid gauze filter on the bottom. the rb30 that i just pulled apart was dented ~40mm and the sump was just touching the bottom of the filter.

mate get it off and fix it. all the people saying it's no problem are living in a fantasy. the pickup is very close to the bottom of the sump if it's not that's another problem. a dent in the sump also changes the shape so oil is more easily run AWAy from the pick-up. on top of that it can damage the pick-up itself, kinded pick-up tube, broken pick-up tube, squashed pick-up mouth. it's not a big deal to remove the sump and beat it flat. it's a hell of a lot easier than doing a set of big end bearings that's for sure.

Precisely. I'd rather remove the sump to check the oil pick up than the engine to rebuild it...

    • Don't even try to run it on the stock ECU if you're going to have the boost controller bring boost above ~10 psi. I've already told you that. If you use the Nistune ECU, you will need to CAREFULLY read the available documentation for Neo tuning, and read some threads on the Nistune forums, to discover the various things you have to do to prevent the ECU from going bananas when the boost is too high. The is a table associated with th boost sensor that must be modified to prevent it from shitting the bed. This is just one of the things that you will need to do to the tune in Nistune, because the Neo turbo ECU will be expecting to see a number of things (such as the TCS) that are not there, and you have to block the DTCs on those. It is totally not surprising to me that you are having the problems that you are, but the solutions to these problems have been known for >15 years. So just get it done.
    • Hi. Sry iam not a mechanic and iam not at the car atm so i dont know 100% but they told they measure those and even try to change those. AFM they have two. Coils are new a they have my old one too. Plugs too. ECU...we have 25 NEO stock and Nistune 25 NEO.   But i dont know if any one those could be the problem and why/if/what can cause this, Only thing they did not check is fuel...but that walbro 255 is new(like 1,5 years)... That fuel pressure gauge idk...but i let them know Any suggestions?   EDIT: how can they know if it is like you say he ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high? Tha car has boost controler
    • Can you clarify what you mean by boost cut, do you mean it misfires both when under load (driving) and when stationary and out of gear? Or does the ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high (boost control issue)? Does it occur at idle with no throttle? When you say "the ECU is OK", what ECU is it and why do you think it is OK? Have you used the NEO ECU, and if so do you have a MAP sensor attached? Same for the AFM, why do you think it is OK? Do you have any way to put a fuel pressure gauge on it (even just a mechanical one between the fuel filter and fuel rail)?
