This is my current setup on my RB20DET R32GTS-t:

GT2530 turbo

3inch exhaust turbo back

FMIC

14psi w/ bleeder

Pod filter w/ partition & CAI

500HP intank fuel pump

Oil catch can

I currently have a dead stock ECU and my car is running pretty rich (std injectors as well), and i want to know what my best option would be with getting some better management. This is what i want to achieve:

- Disable speed cut

- Disable boost cut (or alter it)

- Optimise A/F ratios for maximum power.

I won't really be modifying my car anymore after this.

I have been looking at getting a chip put in my ECU via Chiptorque. The actual chip apparently will give me what i am after and they will make it to suit my current mods using a dyno. I am looking at around $900 for this all up.

Power FC is another option but seeing as i won't be doing any more mods, i think it would be a waste of money....that's even if i could get hold of one.

Are there any other options that i could explore?

Any help is apprciated, as i don't want to make a decision without a bit of advice.

Scott

i want to know too. i've got exactly the same mods plus safc, ebc and rising rate fpr. i'm not a big fan of the chiptorque chips, but i know you can get remaps and tuning done for about $600 elsewhere on the coast or brissy. i'm thinking of getting a FCD, cut wire to remove speed limiter, and safc tune on dyno. alternatively i can get a boost cut, fuel cut and raised rev limit raised chip for $200, then get safc dyno tuned.

Can get ya an Apex Engineering (APEXi's custom dept) Power FC for the RB20DET. Ultra tunable and most shops can do it on the fly.

Or I can give you a book with all the different fuel maps you need, but its in japanese.

If your going to be runnng the HKS 2530, then you may want to consider a bigger AFM. This will add a few $$$ plus make the re-map a little more difficult, though still possible.

Whilst the remap is cheaper, at close to $1000 i would stretch to money to a PFc, you get a great live readout of engine parameters, more flexible tuning albeit with a handcontroller and can be bought at the moment for $1100.

If you ever want to sell the car, then you can sell the PFC, and re-install the std ECU, along with the std turbo setup.

That said im running a re-mapped ECU, and will be getting it tuned again with new cam gears/maybe new cams, but im expecting to only pay about $300-400 all up for the tune

I have never dealt with Chiptorque before. Any reasons why you don't think it's a good idea. PM me if you want. Who else has experience with remapping r32 ecu's around Bris, GC? Since i don't have an safc, i won't be doing what you are thinking of doing, as it will cost me way too much and would be better off going full management. fuel cut defenders and safc's aren't cheap. When are you hitting boost cut/fuel cut? And that $200 chip you speak of, is that one that was remapped in another car to different mods? I was think down this track...but how wrong can you go? Like a remapped ecu on a different 32 with similar mods. But what are my chances of finding one that was setup for 2530...lol

I really don't want to mod the car anymore after this....as the next step would have been cams z32 afm....but where does it come to an end...lol

PowerFC would have been the ultimate option, but it all adds up. Say $1100 for it, 400-500 for hand controller....and then tuning! eeek!

Was your remap done on your cars ECU? How much did you gain from it? And what mods do you have?

Thanks for the help guys.

erm.. yer generally it ends up ending with a rb25 donk or in my case a rb30 donk.

Whats the power curve like? no dips etc? I've heard of good results by just fitting a fuel cut defender. That one that was in the zoom mag that good defected (James from D1) he made some where up around the 230rwkw mark with a fuel cut defender.

Hi Scott, I can tell what a good tuner can achieve by remapping a standard R32 ECU via an on line chip upgrade. But I can't tell you who is a good chip tuner in bananaland. So I would be wasting my time.

My suggestion would be to find your local chiptorque or fueltronics agent, get a written guarantee of results out of them. Tell them you will tell 100 other R32 owners in Joeterritory how great they are if they do a good job on your car. Then get 20 other guys to ring up and say they are waiting on your results. I will bet you that you get a good tune. An average tuner takes longer, but can still get it right, you just have to make him want to spend the extra time.

If you want I will be one of the 20.

I won't bad mouth Chiptorque, i've just seen some less than impressive improvements/power figures for a fair bit of money that it costs. $600 is about my limit for a remap and tune, you'd have to seriously think about spending the extra for an aftermarket ecu above that. That said, they do have a very good reputation and maybe i just need to talk to some more people with tuning by them.

Someone to talk to would be Matthew Spry (0411 340 033 ). He doesn't get a lot of press because he doesn't work for a workshop, he has his own dyno in Molendinar and only does tuning including a lot of the high powered cars on the coast. Gavin Wood also does ecu remaps now and while they're not cheap, his results always impress. The $200 chip only removes boost/speed/rev limit, its not for fuel and timing maps.

Joel i am running into the 10s with the AFR's. My power curve isn't that exciting as you can imagine. It's running the richest at around 5-500rpm which is where the meat of my power should be.

Thanks for the tip Sydneykid...i'll let you know what i decide. I am just making sure to explore all my options before making the plunge.

Neil, thanks for the contacts. Does this Matt do remapping...and how much rb experience does he have. How does Gavin do remaps without using the aid of rollers?

Cheers,

Scott

I remember at least 2 years ago when GTR-Ben was called GTS4-Ben over on SDU.

he said .. If its running rich pump more boost in to it.. lol. :)

If you arn't looking at any more mods then a fuel cut defender might do the trick, providing its all checked out on a dyno while you pump the boost in to it. Sure it won't give you the perfect power curve but it will make more power providing there is a good amount of fueling head room towards the end of the rev range.

I'm not sure if Matt does remaps. Gavin does his remap tuning on the street and Dyson Rotary's dyno.

I may have an SAFC available in the next week if you're interested? There's also a FCD for sale on here and 1 on boostcruising (see post by pink gt) both at about $50. That would mean only about $370 plus probably 1 hours tuning ($85-125) if you wanted to go that way. I'm think i might have to go a standalone ecu since it looks like i need my loom redone anyway and i wouldn't mind bigger injectors. I think i may have to sell a kidney to afford it though...

go for the power fc there is no need to buy the hand controller if someone else is tuning it. If u aren't gonna b modding more then you will only be paying for tuning once. The only problem is you will need to get it tuned with someone who has the apexi excel software, i'm from melb and dunno QLD places. either that or get the hand controller and tune yourself, but u can't see much of the map resolution, but with apexi excel software you can see the whole map and you will get the best results this way.

    • This is the territory of the "Stage 1/2/3 Golf GTI/R" or otherwise off the shelf tune with (relative to before) minor mods. It's easier now. Downpipe and Tune and boom, big increases. Stage 1 OEM+ is where it's at. This is where the niche evolved into and it's really easy to see why. It's rare to even NEED to consider changing turbos or going to aftermarket ECU's or building bottom ends for more power. Stage 1-2-3 will get you a LONG WAY. Civic Type R turbo GR Yaris/Corolla Anything with B58 (MKV Supra/x40i) Anything BMW in General Anything Audi in General Any turbo AMG RenaultSport Turbo offerings Korean Elantra N/I30N Ecoboost Mustangs Focus RS? List goes on. I would argue in the future it won't even need to go on... M3P is pretty rapid out of the box...
    • There is a way, but it's not with the same cars. You need to find the same vintage of car, that we had. Realistically, that was an affordable car with aftermarket parts around. So what people need to find is a car that had a decent base in its day, and can be modified. They're looking for a car year make of 2010 to 2015 really... Aus could have done it if Holden didn't fold as V8 commodores were cheap, and if Ford didn't get expensive thanks to COVID, then you could cheaply play with FG Barras. Realistically, those are just a bit heavier, four door skylines. I'm sure the US and UK have similar cars they could find.
    • Haha I do that.. thats when it chirps..The bit point for me is almost non-existent. Otherwise I stall it. But yes, in terms of performance, the clutch is solid af.
    • Greg speaks wisdom. These dirty old Datsuns are only value when they are cheap. When they are not cheap, there is no value. Sounds contradictory, but it's true. We are now 20 years past the hey day of modifying cheap 90s JDM cars for small amounts of money. This is a different world. If you are rich and can afford not to care about what is effectively wasting money on an old Datto shitter, then I have no reason to argue against it. But if you are wanting to experience what we all experienced back in 2005 (and I bought my car last century!) then there is no way to do it.
    • Short answer: No. Medium answer: No, because you still need to conjure the things out of thin air to bolt them to a NA to make it a NA+T. Long Answer: No - The things you need to conjure - meaning a turbo, intercooling, manifolds, exhaust, intake/manifold/piping, clutch, injectors, fuel pump, AFM (?), ECU + Wiring (woo, N/A loom fun) have to come from somewhere. You could have many scavenged these things from an OEM car that someone had upgraded from and use some of these. This will be cost prohibitive now, especially so in the USA. You'd probably pay the same for newer, upgraded components that are better than old OEM stuff from 25-30 years ago. None of these big ticket items are re-usable for the N/A car. Why not buy new and upgrade while you're there? The only real consideration is turbo and fuel sizing and determining whether you want to stay within the bounds of the OEM engine or get into rebuild territory. These limits ARE lower with a N/A motor and especially N/A gearbox at the starting point. And if you're gonna upgrade those then you may as well consider having them built to begin with. Because everyone here knows you're never far from that next engine rebuild once you start making the power you want... The cars you see on the internet and SAU etc have been built over decades. If you're really clued in... you would sell your US car to somebody for what you paid for it. You would then scour AU JDM pages or SAU and buy a car like Dose's on this forum with your powerful American Dollar. This will save you so much money in the long term. Importing it could be tricky. Or it might not because USA. I have long said the only reason 90's Japanese stuff took off was because a) Japanese people had Japanese cars so that is what they used b) Australians could import these cars to Australia with very minimal changes and use them on the road here c) Neither country had well-priced access to US or EU Sports Cars. I don't believe the JDM scene would have taken off in Australia at all if we had EU priced EU BMW M offerings, or more especially the AUS V8 Scene would never have existed if we had the multitude of US cars like Camaros, Mustangs, Corvettes at the prices you folks do. After all - Do the math. I would say put a V8 in your R34 and that's the smart way forward. It is. I did it. I know this from my own experience. But at that point there's no reason to simply not buy a C5 or C6? It would be simpler and easier and cheaper and bette-
