Hey guys. I am still fairly new here, but thought this is the perfect place to ask. If I have posted this in the wrong section, PLZ dont burn me, instead, plz guide me to the right part of the forums thanks :D To my question.

It is a huge Q discussed alot, so I thought I would start a new thread with my specific requirements so you guys can see what would be best. I will be on my p's for around 2 more years, so plz dont say "wait till you can get an R34 GTR", because I simply cannot wait + afford that :D I have ALWAYS wanted a skyline since I could remember, and hopefully soon ish (in around 4-6 months) I should have AROUND the $16k-$18k region to buy a skyline. I was originally thinking an R33, but just CANNOT get over the R34's looks, even though what I want is performance, so the looks is not too important, yet I am too caught up in its appearance. First things first, my requirements:

I would like to be able to:

  • upgrade entire exhaust system
  • upgrade parts of the intake
  • do minor to more detailed engine mods e.g. forged pistons, cams etc.
  • possibly after market bodykit
  • Interior mods like gear knob, steering wheel, racing seats (the seats are a must now because I was lucky to sit in a brand new R34 GTR the other day and now I want racing seats)
  • and possibly racing harness if I get serious about upgrading this specific car and not move to a gtr etc.

I know, there will probably be things in my list of to do's that you guys wont agree on, but please, let it pass for now and harrass me about it later :P So what my basic question is, for my requirements, what would be a better skyline to get, an R33 gts-t, or an R34? the MAIN reason why I am still hesitant about the R34 is that Neo-6 engine. Honestly, I am still learning, so I have no idea what the difference between this engine, and the rb25 etc is (what I mean is, I have no clue as to whether the neo-6 is just a plastic engine cover, covering an rb25 or similar), I know it sounds stupid, but I am still learning.

As I said, I am still learning, so please dont get angry if anything I have said sounds stupid. I really appreciate any help you guys can offer, because I know you guys are the best to talk to about this.

Thanks so much for any help.

neo engine is basically the same.. just changes in the head.. supposed to be better environmental stuff.. for the environment yo..

also.. you can't drive a gts-t or gtt on your p's anyway.. so if you can't drive the GTR then non turbo is your only option..

what brand new R34 GTR did you sit in.. they arent new sice 2002..

I wouldnt be doing any engine work to a N/A if you are upgrading to a turbo model when you get off your p's.. they are also illegal to mod the engine if you are on your p's

Both are going to be slow in N/A form so just choose the one you like the best

I say brand new but I really meant, basically never driven, just a showroom R34 GTR, so it felt brand new :D you can drive gts-t's on your p's as long as its non turbo right? anyway, thx for the reply, my thinking is that if in the future I got for something with more grunt, like the R34 gtr, then I might as well NOW buy an R33, just so I can say I have owned one, so I can feel the diff etc. A series 2 R33 wouldnt be a bad car :D

Thanks.

gts-t ... the last t stands for turbo.. you want a GTS.. or GT in R34.. and don't mod them.. you won't get a bang for buck increase..

you wanna know what they are like to drive.. go to a dealer and test drive the N/A R33 and R34.. then go test drive a VT - VE commodore.. the commodore is faster or at least equiv... if you just want power than wait till you are off your p's..

just get what ever looks more appealing to you, they both arent going to go fast, as ive heard :( i own a gts r33 atm but its still getting fixed and have onyl driven it once, but it felt better than any other car ive driven. personally i think any skyline will feel fast compared to other normal cars, as in its handling department.

one thing you have to consider, which i did, is if you get the r34 gt (non turbo), it will cost at least $10,000 minimum, even more if you want a manual. you have to add at least $2000 on top of that for insurance, as with a $10,000 car i wouldnt just want third party.

but if you got a r33 GTS, you would only have to spend $4000 minimum, plus then you have left over money for handling, stereo, interior mods. plus you can afford to get third party cause its not worth it on a $4000 car.

if that makes sense.

but if you have the money i say get whatever you want, which sounds to me a r34 GT

(make sure its manual) aah :)

Ok, I honestly didnt know the last t stood for turbo (noob I am) lol. I do LOVE the r34's, looks, but then again, I still want an R33, so I guess when it comes to buying the car, I will probably go for an R33, but it will ultimately be whats more affordable and easier to get at that point of time. I do believe that if I am to get an R34, theres no point unless I get the gtr, so I would probably be best with an R33. at the moment, I am driving A saab900s 4cyl 2.3L (I do not like the car, I have it because my dads mate had to get rid of it around the same time I got my p's), so I am lucky to getta working car, but its also auto, so either way, when I get a MANUAL skyline, that extra 2 cylinders alone will feel ALOT better then my car atm. believe it or not, I am actually trying to see whether I can sell the saab and buy a real cheap manual to play around with b4 I get a skyline, because although I love manuals, no one in my family owns one, so I have only the basic skills and experieince in driving my mates manual.

Thanks alot for the help guys, I really appreciate it.

grab an xr6 or a commodore, seriously NA skyline is VERY VERY VERY slow, even compared to civics they are just a tad faster, it's absolutely ridiculous, please don't make the mistake I did and buy a NA skyline! the neo rb25de gives an extra 7kW of power too, but DONT buy one for performance! The car you have now would probably smoke a NA skyline straight up

I really want power, but ultimately, till im off my p's, cant get a whole lot of it. I love looks, but no cars, NO cars whatsoever will be able to surpass my love for ANY skyline :D I used to like commys, but just have no real appeal to them anymore, all I think about now are skylines lol. so I think that for now I dont mind what power I get, aslong as its a manual skyline im driving ill be happy ahah. thanks.

would I be better off going with an autec silvia till I can getta more powerful skyline?

This

The autech silvia handles great and believe the kws are the same as a stock standard Aussie spec 200sx

Or an NA supra?

Power to weight is what you need to look at on your P plates, lots of little 4 CYL cars are going to be quicker than a bigger heavier 6 CYL, just buy a little Honda or similar, no point in getting anything else really if its performance you after, unless you want a car that looks fast but is really really slow.

And only spend money on brake, tyres and suspension, power mods on NA cars are no value for money, excluding breathing mods like a good quality filter panel and zorst.

Those little Honda go alright, seen a few stockish cars at track days and they punch well above their weight

Please don't buy a NON turbo skyline... there are simply horrid... R33 / R34 are heavy GT Cars... they need the turbo to get going.. Nissa should not have made them without one to begin with

if you buy a non turbo... you will get soooooo disappointed with the liner, that when your finally off P, you will never buy a proper skyline

may i suggest Pulsar SSS.. the import version with SR20 or S15 N/A

both are nice

Specially S15 N/A

Now im thinking silvia :P I dont mind the silvia, because until you see the behind, its basically a skyline in my eyes :P I would truly miss the skyline, but good things come to those who wait, and yet, silvias I think are ONE of the most powerful p plate legal cars. I sat in a few the other day, and with a racing seat, I love them, because they are low and imo a little cramped inside, it makes you feel one with the car, and I love that :D

Yep will do. I know they all say this, but Im only really gonna but it to use on the tracks, not like the dickheads out there who ruin the fun by turing the long straights of the highway into the raceway, givin the modified car community a bad name :( if I do getta silvia, can I still post here :P???

Power to weight, the 1500 odd kg of the 33 34 with a power of 120 kw ??? vs a 1200 odd kg S with 100 ??? kw, not sure of correct specs but you get the idea, the lighter car will accelerate faster and stop quicker due to the less weight its carrying as long as the power to weight ratio is higher.

Another car to consider is the Mazda MX5, not the most powerfully car but a tight chassis which handles like its on rails, make sure to get a hard lid though.

    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
    • Hi,  Just joined the forum so I could share my "fix" of this problem. Might be of use to someone. Had the same hunting at idle issue on my V36 with VQ35HR engine after swapping the engine because the original one got overheated.  While changing the engine I made the mistake of cleaning the throttle bodies and tried all the tricks i could find to do a throttle relearn with no luck. Gave in and took it to a shop and they couldn't sort it. Then took it to my local Nissan dealership and they couldn't get it to idle properly. They said I'd need to replace the throttle bodies and the ecu probably costing more than the car is worth. So I had the idea of replacing the carbon I cleaned out with a thin layer of super glue and it's back to normal idle now. Bit rough but saved the car from the wreckers 🤣
    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.
