dont hear much about hondas big little victories these days though, most of their cars are too heavy now and everyone else is running turbos in bigger badder cars.. Im starting to wonder, is there a whole new scene out there I havent caught up with yet...or is the track day scene dying off somewhat with a new generation more concerned with luxuries and electronic gizmos than outright performance..I mean if I want a car to perform fisrt thing I do is rip out the airconditioning knowing i'm also helping the planet in the process... Which brings up another point, is it the threat we are destroying the planet curbing peoples enthusiasm towards the scene..

i see alot of mazda 3s kicking around and they look somewhat sporting but I dont really hear of any track weapons based on them, same goes for the MPS..although hondas new CRZ looks like it could be interesting. Maybe all the cool cars are coming out of europe now but I havent paid enough attention to know what they are. i dont know, but do you ever feel like theres a party somewhere and you werent invited,

Our scene dominated in the 90s. Things have died off since then. The killer is government restrictions on 'greener motors' and safety requirements.

To keep up with the euro standards the motors become a lot less brutal and have a lot more crap holding them back. More of a pain to work with all round IMHO. The weight on the cars continues to rise with addition of new features and changed motor body standards. It turns out crumple zones and 'crash test happy' designes dont necessarily make for an all out track weapon like the old tube frame chassis does lol.

So much fight here with Skylines vs Rotorarys vs V8 commodores...

So I shall bring in a new contender; the Falcon XR6T (& F6), over the years it have grown to be quiet a formidable opponent against the V8 commodores in traffic light grand prix & up until recently with FPV releasing its SC V8, the F6 was the faster car in Ford's line up, beating the old Ford V8.

What's everybody's option of it? I'm thinking of buying one (older F6 or a current gen XR6T) as my next car & do the usual mods to it (most say you can get 300rwkw fairly easily with just bolt ons & flash tune).

On one of my trips to Albany I was following behind a XR6T and that thing just goes, everytime he pulls out to overtake some snail in Camrys/caravan/road train.

These are getting better and better. 300rwkw is literally an exhaust and a flash tune away. The FG model is the one to get (the standard model has a better motor than an older model F6) and I believe the snapping driveshafts metter has also been put to bed.

I think the amount of effort involved in building a 250rwkw R33 would be resultant in a 400rwkw XR6T that would probably still have better response and powerband than the skyline.

4L of turbo 6 and were back to the topic of a whole lot of volumetric efficiency lol. GL

Hmm gearbox just started to crunch going into 5th unless i do it really slow, might need to hold off on the overnight parts from japan until I know if im up for a new box or not.

Thoughts? Gonna try an oil change with that redline fluid and see if it helps, how much is an rb25 box anyway?

900 dollars for a box that crunches third and fifth :P

but seriously,I've owned 2 33s and both don't like fifth being changed fast.

Use it as it should be used and don't slam the cruising gear. simple.

New oil is always a plus.

This ^ They are a big heavy gearbox and they dont like being slammed through the gears.

Also ditch the Redline in favour of something else. I use to use Redline until my gearbox specialist said its not that good for synchro boxes. It sticks like shit to a fan and this is its problem. It gums up the synchros and stops them from working properly.

I think the issue into 5th with the larger turbo box is a combination of a big gap ratio wise and the 25 not sheding revs quickly enough from up high ie std weight flywheel and clutch . I opted to have my OE flywheel lightened when the JB clutch went in and it makes a noticable difference when changing up from high revs - or double declutching on the way down . If an engines rotating mass is heavy it carries a lot of innertia and the flywheel effects of this mean the revs don't fall quickly enough and this makes the baulk rings cone clutches work harder and sometimes not well enough .

I think these days the aim is to have a car explode out of the blocks and pull like a 14 yr old up to maybe 130+ . The authorities have technology/the law/public aproval on their side and when you get caught speed theres no defending it .

Now to reach 60-80 mph quickly takes a lot of torque early and you really need AWD to get it happening without the smoke and music . Power to weight with the appropriate gearing is essential . Being light weight is also essential .

You may laugh but I wish there was a drag class that was speed limited to 70mph 110km/h because it would force people to attack the age old problem of slingshotting off the line and not having the warp 9 crashes if they lost it .

As I said laugh if you like but where can you use 200 km/h performance on the street and how many years will you be walking everywhere after you get nailed for it ? Thats asuming you didn't lose it at escape velocity and or take some innocent out along the way .

The Japs do make cars that are lightish/torquey/AWD/big brakes/smart diffs/turbo/intercooled blah blah blah . Childs play to make them waste anything with one diff and any number of cylinders .

When you don't care about the 80-100 + mph anymore and you want afordable street performance you buy an Evolution Lancer . They still wind up to some impressive speeds but their focus is on 0-80 mph which is better on the street than 50-150 mph performance . Everything you could want for them is available and they pull buggery at sub goal cell speeds .

My gearbox does the same thing if I am not really nice to it changing into 5th. Once I realised that I just be nice on that change, fixed. Havent had a noise since.

My 3rd gear is absolutely fine though, can do all sorts of nasty things. :)

Eh, Evo's are good cars, best car for the street. Would love to own a VII. Happy with the Skyline though :)

I also get the crunch into 5th at high speeds, it's a common thing. Change nicely, no problem.

yeah but most people preaching evo are city folk, theres alot of open roads in aus where a bigger more midrange biased car with lounges for seats is king...not everybody wants a go stop car some just want to gooooooo and occasionly stop and turn it around...:laugh:

In my car, winding out second = ~90kph. Third gear forget about it. It's fun (especially fwy on ramps, woooooooo) but it's a bit rubbish on the street otherwise, I'm only just hitting full boost when I already need to stop accelerating.

Perhaps in a straight line. I'm not interested in going fast in a straight line anyway :)

Yeh I track my car, it's not solely street driven. Super responsive turbo is good on the street but at Barbagallo where we have the long back-straight, I like to go faaaaaast :D

Neither.. All this talk is exactly that talk...Im not one to condone street racing but I have been around enough to tell you, I dont care what you drive, a testosterone fuelled bloke in a stock 6 cylinder auto commodore in good condition can be a formidable opponent on the streets

Well people want to talk about Commodes and V8s yet it isn't a Holden forum either . Then they want to talk about matching or bettering them with a 2.5 turbo RWD Skyline which if you think about it would be in a reasonably high state of tune to make 6L type performance .

Now neither the Commode or the RWD Skyline is going to get off the line cleanly given a big bootfull - wheelspin city - thats what my GTS25T does with a std turbo/GTt cooler and 235 45 17" Michy PP2s . Thats on a good dry surface BTW and we'll assume a 110 km/h piece of road so we can use at least 2 gears ...

If its a traffic light grand prix the limit won't be 110 more like 60-80 km/h which is probably around 1 gear performance . If you get busted going over then you deserve everything you get because you won't beat the law .

Also don't think I'm totally Evo centric because I like all high performance AWDs and especially the old Grp A homologation specials . I will say that the Rally inspired ones make good road cars because Rally performance is closer to road performance that tarmac race performance is .

What have the V8 Super Nascars inspired in the way of production cars and what if any of their make up can you buy even in toned down form from a dealership ?

Not everyone wants an 1800 Kg Commodore or the the lack of fuel consumption that goes with it .

Not everybody wants a 320+ Kw 2.5L RWD Skyline with its peaky performance etc .

Not everyone wants an Evo Lancer thats smaller lighter more agile and less comfy .

We know its impossible to pick the best points of all three because advantages and disadvantages overlap .

The more competition oriented a car becomes the less comfortable and user friendly it ends up being . Its really hard to argue that any car with supreme performance handling etc can be had out of anything thats remotely affordable .

To each their own I suppose .

to each their own is exactly right Disco, we all drive different roads so it only makes sense we all drive different cars to suit our style and the roads we drive.

There is no "one size fits all" car and personally I like to have different cars for different purposes..my skyline for fun my accord for luxury and my ute for work..So looking at that f I was to buy a one size fits all car ,an SS ute or wagon would probably be my best choice :)

as a value for money bang for bucks car, the skyline is surely the best , with great economy off boost great power potential and strong driveline, jap technology and a true sports car handling and feel it has to be the pick, the japs know what there doing..

    • Morning all, I have an RB25DET Neo that's in need of a rebuild. Will need new pistons etc due to detonation damage. Would anyone be able to recommend a shop in Southeast Queensland who I could bring my long motor to for a rebuild? Just want someone who knows RBs and whos built a bunch of them before. TLDR - recommended engine shops for RB rebuild.
    • Gday Thought it was about time I started a build thread! As expected this project has snowballed into a huge financial liability, but unless you’re strong willed and responsible, it’s not a surprise. Background -  My first turbo car was an R32 GTS-4, got my full license and then totalled my Au Falcon a week later, so while trying to sell my RMZ450 dirtbike to buy another car a bloke offered to swap the R32 which at the time I felt like I was ripped off but looking back and seeing prices of those now ($40kish) it was a good deal, I didn’t know enough about these cars to appreciate what I had so sold it before the RB20 blew up. Between here and there, out of 12 cars I’ve owned the note worthy ones are a V8 Lexus SC400 (soarer), a couple of XR6 Turbos and my beloved S15 which I had for about 3 years, picked it up for $12500, repairable write off but she was fine, gun metal grey/pewter and bone stock/unmolested until I got my hands on it. Ended up spending about the value of the car and 280kw, 2 demerit points by the time I got defected and sold it for $14500 (also $40kish in today’s market, rip) Fast forward to the present day, I’m in a much better position financially and daily an MQ Triton (great cars, pipe down Ranger Bois), I cruised marketplace and car sales for a few months looking for another R32, the best deal I could find was an absolute rust bucket half finished project for $12000, until this R33 popped up in Port Macquarie for $18k - unregistered and barely running but decent shape, kept an eye on it for a few weeks and the price steadily dropped, $16k then $15k then $14k, that was the point where I was like shit someone’s gonna snatch this up! It was owned by a young bloke who had big plans but him and his missus just had a baby so smartest move financially for them but big gain for me. So 2 days later I’m towing a car trailer to pick this thing up. Roughly 2 weeks and $3500 later I’m cruising around Newcastle in my beat up R33 all smiles and dose noises! It only needed some basic shit to get it going, coil packs and air flow meter, electrical stuff and all fluids changed, 158k kms and running pretty good, nice smooth engine after oil and coolant flush - when I say coolant I mean it had been filled up with tap water, every gallery and heater element was filled with rust, 8-9 flushes later and still had brown liquid coming out but she’ll be right. The car was painted R34 Bayside Blue at some point but whether it was a cheap job or just not looked after is anyone’s guess, clear coat flaking like sausage roll.  Was rethinking my choices and contemplating life, had it up for sale for $22k - still cheaper than any registered R33 but got little interest, next minute I had an opportunity at work - 6 months overseas for good money, so that was a no brainer, fast forward again and here we are with a 50% finished project. Current Mods - 200ish KW according to butt dyno Was tuned with Apexi PowerFC EBC (old school Greddy Profec)  Stock turbo (more shaft play than a Tinder date gone right) 3inch turbo back Varex muffler  Aftermarket injectors of mystery size, Power FC showed 36% duty cycle at full boost so not behd good size Someone had good intentions but stuck with the stock R33 MAF so we had misfires at 6000rpm due to the MAF hitting 5.2V So far I’ve redone the entire interior with carpet form Car Mats Direct, new Seats and steering wheel from Autotechnica, also sound system by Autobarn (mainly Kicker) Also MCA pro comfort coil overs - Hands down best purchase yet, worlds of improvement over the tired 30yrold shocks Goals - 450kw/600hp on flex tune New paint job - Midnight Purple 2 Engine is at the shop getting rebuilt with forged rods a pistons, new valves and springs, ATI Harmonic balancer, Aeroflow 7.5L sump, rear head drain and oil restrictors as per oil control thread* and cam covers modded for larger breathers, other stuff I can’t recall of the top of my head Parts purchased and to be installed once the engine is done -  Engine loom from Wiring Specialties including these options: Haltech Nexus S3 R35 Coil pack conversion  PRP Dual Trigger kit Fan controller  Other Parts -  262 Kelford Cams Turbo - Hypergear ATR43SS3-ProS with T51R mod (whistly boi) 6 boost manifold (high mount) 50mm Turbosmart Pro gate (plumbed back for legal reasons) HKS Super Turbo Exhaust with High Flow Cat Custom 3.5inch dump and front pipe 1500cc Bosch injectors  Fuel Pump walbro 525 Haltech MAP and IAT sensors Haltech Flex Sensor Fenix Radiator with dual thermo fans LS1 Alternator Kit Oil Filter Relocation from EFI solutions and Cooling pro oil cooler Many other things sitting in my garage waiting for that engine to come back.     • Losses have to be less with DC coupling. Provided the battery inverter has decent MPP tracking ability - which really shouldn't be a problem. It's not 2005 any more.
    • Hi, Will the R33 GTR rear brake backing plates fit a GTST? I'm struggling to find GTST ones but can find new GTR ones.   Thanks.
