Hi, I recently bought my first skyline, Its a ECR33 GTS25T, in fact its my first car new enough to have fancy things like air con, and power steering. (My other car is a LH Torana) So I have found myself a little confused about all the fancy things in my new car. After a bit of playing i have mastered the power windows, mirrors, air con, and the other little gadgets, now its time I move onto the things that make the car ZOOM! First of all is the turbo, it has a HKS GT2540 Turbo kit. Now for me that sounds fancy but other than that I cant tell you anything, all I can find on the net about it is prices, how can i find specs/instructions or any info for this turbo?

I also have a GReedy B-Spec boost controller, Like the turbo it also sounds fancy, and it has a button that turns it from crazy mode into CRAZY mode. But how can i tell if this is set up right for the turbo/car? Or should i just be safe and leave it in crazy mode and forget about CRAZY all together?

Also if theres anything else I might have missed, or you think i should know about please let me know, as I really have no idea about the car at all.

That is just high and low boost. If it was setup right, and the guy you bought it from had the car tuned at a reputable place, I wouldn't give anyone money to start fiddling with it. If its making power and not knocking, why burn money.

Nice turbo too, very responsive piece of kit. Don't change anything on it. It looks like some big money and time has been put into it. Enjoy it and when you feel you need more, strap on a hypergear.

+1 take it to a reputable shop and have them give it the once over.

Have them run it up on the dyno to make sure its all running safe.

Then enjoy what youve got :) (dont listen to anyone telling you your turbo isnt the greatest one.... just enjoy what it is for now as im sure its great).

Why? The turbo's that Tao has been working on recently really has sunk its claws into the top market turbos. Sure garretts are good, but they are generic turbos for any car; no specific application. These hypergear turbos are designed, built, and tested for RB motors. I know where I am(and have) putting my money. No dicking around with spacers, custom dumps, wastegate setups etc.

Take it to a reputable workshop and get them to give it a once over.

If I were you I would go and get it serviced; you never know what oils the previous owner was using or how long they have been in there, etc. Might as well get them to check general things like boost controller settings, and all that. Won't cost much, and for the peace of mind it would be worth it.

I got quoted $900 for a full once over, $1500 if I wanted my timing belt changed too and $1900 if I wanted my injectors cleaned. Told them to stick it. I changed all fluids my self, flushed radiator etc all round then had the car on a dyno. They told me the power, tweaked my power fc and told me it was safe to go. $90 spent on the dyno run and tweak.

When you move to Skylines, there are alot of things you can DIY to save money to pay for things you can't DIY!

HKS turbo kits are designed for their application as well, but they have been doing it a hell of alot longer and known to produce responsive setups with no 'dicking' around...

I dont believe there is any 'the best' setup, its what works all feels good to the owner unless your in comp...

Lol at $400 for injector cleaning. The other stuff is ridiculous as well. Sounds like the workshop was trying to take advantage of you.

I do agree, I DIY most things on my car. But judging by the OP's post, he doesn't have much experience with these cars/engines. In my opinion, he should get it serviced properly and well checkout out the first time. There's a lot that could need changing that he might look over if just changing the oil, ie. belts, brake pads, rotors, etc. etc.

Then once he has had the car for awhile and has got some more experience with it, DIY to his hearts content :)

Yep without a doubt - take it to a workshop that you intend to use moving forward.

Get them to check it out. First thing i would do with a new purchase that has modifications.

Also a full oil change (diff/gearbox as well), always a good idea as you never know the last time it was actually done by the previous owner etc.

Yes totally correct. The HKS2540 is a old tech turbo unfortunately. Much better choices on the market now for 4-5 years

Certainly the first place to start if more power is wanted.

    • Initially I thought having a pair of Recaro seats would be a big bonus, it turns out these do get a little uncomfortable on long journeys (my fault, not the seat). I had a look through the GSM Performance website at reclining seats and booked an appointment to visit their show room. I got the Recaro Sportster CS for the R34 from here, was very happy with the service received so of course a re-visit was in order. Unfortunately the two Corbeau seats I had chosen aren't on display but they had 4 other options available. Two seats dug into my back, one dug into my legs and the other was perfect. I also found out that Recaro seats use a larger bolt pattern so some adaption was required. Luckily GSM offer some universal adaptors that should solve this problem. I searched the interwebs for price comparisons and Corbeau themselves were the cheapest at £300 cheaper (for the pair). I asked GSM if they could price match, unfortunately they couldn't. I later received an email saying Corbeau would honour them the same discount, but the purchase was already made. I did however order the brackets from GSM, both arrived on the same day. I started with the passenger side seat, knowing this was going to be a little trial and error. There are 3 mounting holes at the front and 2 at the rear on these JURAN Racing seat rails.  With the adaptor brackets mounted, the allen cap bolts started to push into the seat, NOT GOOD!  The rear mounting holes lined up but there were issues at the front. The holes were 1/2 hole out, so the brackets got a tickle with the drill to modify the holes. The supplied bolts weren't going to be long enough and a spacer was needed to stop the adaptor bars from bending. A local fasteners company supplied be with some nylon spacers and longer bolts (M8x30, although these will be replaced with 35mm long shortly) A before and after I pre-drilled the front bracket before making a start on the driver's seat to save some time. And in no time at all that was in the car too. The all black seats have transformed the interior and these are MUCH more comfortable. The only downside with the new Corbeau seats is I sit a little higher, but I'll happily accept that over discomfort. The Youtube video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPyttKPktXA
    • All 3 I guess. The car came with the JASI Aero 4 door Type R Full Kit unpainted so this was one thing at the top of my list to complete then I noticed there were body panels parts for this kit so i picked them up along with some black mesh to fill in the front bumper and front side air vents. car is at a paint and body shop atm completing this work. Next I will be addressing the internal bells and whistles, great summer project I can do with the kids.  full interior removal - ,boys car sound deadening - pads and spray ,boys stereo, sound, lighting - Big 3, GTT or bigger alternator ,kids head lining - dye black add star lighting mod ,daughter. That's it for the next 5-6 months. I have some motor maintenance  work i have to plan out. oil filter relocation, gaskets, mounts. beyond that, mind is starting to turn over if i can use a DET intake plenum, block off turbo ports & pipe in a air intake.      
    • roller coaster of a ride. Alarm system was removed & main harness was repaired where possible. still no fix just random successful starts. moved on to the replacing the ignition switch and relay. well all this troubleshooting & repair has been going on, the car is at a paint and body shop being pushed around. Ive been going down there on odd days after work to get it sorted.

    • PROBLEM WAS BROKEN COOLANT SENSOR!!! Replaced with a new one and its running mint.
