luke gtr
hope this is in the right section. i was just wondering if anyone has taken their own car to germany to do the autobahns and nurburgring? is it even possible? its one of my life goals, do the car up to the point i want it, then take it to a place where i can do the speeds legally. any info would be appreciated. will be doing my own research also. p.s. i used the search function, and came up with alot of people using hired cars, but not their own from australia. defari
Each to their own but the expenses involved would be enough to put anyone off. Just hire a car at the ring. Plenty to chose from. N1GTR
Shipping to and from (customs charges, forwarder charges, any local tax also) would be enough to make this a waste of time, but if that isn't a drama for you then you'd have to get the car allowed on the road somehow. I suggest you start by seeing how you could get a permit to drive on the road before anything else. Think of it this way, if you brought your car to Australia from say, Germany, you'd have to organize some kind of single movement permit depending on the state you want to be in or a rally rego (harder), then get the car inspected to be able to drive on the roads, some basic insurance, CTP-this is after getting import approval of course. Then you've got best case, a permit to drive a car from point to point, running on a fuel which probably isn't available at the local pumps so a retune would be needed unless you freighted it a few drums from where it was tuned last, of course then you'd need to carry fuel with you for wherever you're going around the place. In short; rent a lambo of something like that and go for it. Or, once you've finished the car and it's all tuned etc, call a few local airports and ask if there is anyone with a private hire soon, then speak to those people and see if they'll let you run down the runway a few times for a fee. N1GTR
Also the easiest way to find out how to get it on the road is to either call their embassy and tell them what you want to do, or email their road ministry but the language barrier may be an issue Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/377215-the-autobahn/#findComment-6016620 Share on other sites
R-PWR
I had a lamborghini murcielago lp640 in germany for 2 days and a Gallardo for 2 days and hit over 300km/h more than 5 times with a top speed of 324km/h (would have been higher if not for cars coming up fast I would love to bring my car over but its going to work out cheaper by far to higher an exotic that will be able to do whatever speeds you like. rondofj
why not run your car on the speed-limitless roads of Northern Territory and dodge a few roos too?? defari
if hiring at the ring i thoroughly recommend you do not get a fast car i.e porsche etc. you'll be amazed at how different it is in real life (assuming you've played it on games like gran turismo, forza) Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/377215-the-autobahn/#findComment-6017248 Share on other sites
Berk
NZ has no speed limits 5 minutes from Christchurch Airport, go there, hire car, fun. No need for a return ticket either.... ME GUSTA!! oh and going again anytime soon? how awesome would an SAU trip be with a few dedicated souls pooling funds for a week of autobahn bliss? no, nowhere near soon. either way, not going to be cheap. if even possible, taking my car is going to take ALOT of saving... why not run your car on the speed-limitless roads of Northern Territory and dodge a few roos too?? see below NT now has speed limits..... the no limits were removed a while ago.. if hiring at the ring i thoroughly recommend you do not get a fast car i.e porsche etc. you'll be amazed at how different it is in real life (assuming you've played it on games like gran turismo, forza) ive never really played the ring on video games. just reackon it would be an amazing experience.... hamiltonau
the last seasonal event in world circuits right now on GT5 is the Nurburgring, racing around it in a 850HP Audi R8 race car is scary enough in a video game, even a car with half that horsepower would mean bringing a few spare sets of underwear... you wont forget the experience for a while though, DO IT! emts
I don't think the ring is the be all and end all, but still was fun (plus overtaking a 911 in a swift was cool) but I have had better roads many other places, my fav was chasing a little lotus on the back roads heading to Goodwood in the UK. but on the ring or autobahn next to impossible to really open a car up fully just far far too much traffic.....so just hit a track/airport/salt pan and do it there.. (salt pan is still on my bucket list) Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/377215-the-autobahn/#findComment-6017595 Share on other sites
Peter89
Isle of Man is the only other place I know that has no speed limits on rural roads. However, I would expect they are wet for most of the year due to how north it is.
