Hey guys just Want to sort this out before my engine goes in I read somewhere on here a while ago that when putting ball bearing turbos on a car ie 32GTR that you may need oil restrictors in the feed lines. I've done a heap of searches and can't manage to find it again so Im wonderin does this apply with my application or do Garrett restrict all their direct replacement turbos such as -5's?

Cheers in advance.

There's gotta be a reason why HKS supply banjo bolts with restrctors built in with their GTRS & GTSS turbo kits so one can only assume they are needed.

if you need the banjo bolts with the .8mm restrictor in them, you can get them on ebay from kando_dynamics.

Well the HKS GT-RS's that came off my car had NO restrictors in the core BUT had really stupidly small oil holes in the banjo bolt.

The off the shelf Garrett -5's that replaced them had the restrictors in the core hence no need for the HKS banjo's. Stock banjo's went back in.

Look into the oil feed and see if it is restricted.

My -1/-9 I installed last wk had the restrictor built in the core....To the bottom of the hole was completely sealed off, and to the side about where the thread stops there was a tiny hole probably 1mm or less. You actually have to look good to see it, and honestly I think the -5 would be the same.

Always wondered why HKS lncluded the banjos in the gtss kit....Probably just to justify the price : )

You'll also have a little work to do with the front turb oil drain pipe to get it to work.

BTW....No need to worry about the whole "S" thing....Just labelling AFAIK

Half the problem is knowing what to look for.. when you look into the oil feed on the turbo you don't easily see the 'restrictor' part. But actually you are looking right at it.

I took a photo of mine out of the turbo. You see the tiny hole on the side (this one is 0.8mm, the -5's came with 1.2mm originally)

hope these photos might help.. but to summarize, yes, -5 do come with a 1.2mm restrictor.

(oh and yes this turbo pictured is a -7.. but -5 is same)

Yeah Cheers man I've gotten to the point where everything measures up the same looks the same and to all accounts IS the same apart from the tags so they're going on lol!

Cheers R32 TT pic's will help out alot. I thought they would be restricted from factory just wanted to be sure.

Blue_vl_t yeah I'm running a trust aftermarket pump but I cant remember the exact thread I was reading and if it even refered to replacement bolt on kits might have just been aftermarket larger than stock items.

Anyway thanks all for the help.

    • Ok guys thank you very much. GCG highflow it is then 🙂
    • forgot to mention that when it does this it does not kill the engine, but I have not kept the pedal down long enough to let it, as I see no reason to beat up on it as its got to be something simple, small and dumb causing this.  And as soon as I let off pedal, the engine returns to its normal super smooth operation and rpms re-stabilize quickly, once below 4k.
    • neither stumble or cut really seem to be an appropriate term....hard to explain its like a rev limiter but at 4k, but it violently shakes engine and entire vehicle as the rpms will not rise over 4k, even with slow acceleration. as soon as it hits 4k, it sounds like entire spark is lost entirely. plugs were 1.1 which I used as such, but later put in new plugs gapped down to .8 changed back after issue arose when I replaced the coils, still does it with either plug gap...damn and it was all running so good.
    • Oh how times have changed! I actually lean it out relative to my water/methanol injector duty cycle. The methanol adds a lot of fueling and you can then lean it out even more due to reduced knock.
    • Yeah my thoughts are the same, a well thought out WMI setup, would be slightly ahead of just straight E85 and you're also chemically intercooling the charged air, dropping it even further. This is why you need to add so much more fuel as soon as you spray. I remember someone taking me through their set up before (Dennis, has a R33, lives around Cabramatta - no idea if he's still around on this forum). He would target AFR 10:1 on 98, then as WMI ramped on, AFR would lean back up to 11:1. Amazingly, he did this all through his PowerFC, a relay to cut power to his EBC solenoid if there was not enough line pressure on his WMI kit. And of course, if there wasn't any boost made above gate pressure, you wouldn't be accessing the load cells with heaps of timing for WMI. One downside to that rudimentary setup, once the WMI came on, the EBC would unleash the dragon, and of course all the timing. Tyres would fry lol.
