Hello Forum Readers

I am interested in purchasing a 1997 r33 gtst in 2-3 years time. This month i will be applying for my learners and I am obsessed with cars. I have some questions about skylines which i hope you will be able to answer.

1. Is a skyline a great first car.

2. Is it safe to purchase a car from import sites. ie prestigemotorsport.com.au. If you know anyother sites could you please post it.

3. As all r33 skylines are second hand how is their performance compared to a new ford, hyndai, kia etc

4. Is it hard to obtain car loan/insurrance for a skyline r33.

5. Will the price of a 1997 skyline r33 gtst drop in 2 - 3 years time.

Thankyou for your time and help.

Regards

Patrick

1. A Skyline is a great car, get it asap :D

2. Prestiege Motorsport imports cars, other sites: www.carsales.com.au, www.carpoint.com.au

3. Pfft @ everything except skyline :D

4. Insurance vary's on age, if it's N/A or not, bad license reputation etc etc...

5. The value will decrease, dont know how much though.

:wavey:

1. Skyline will be a good first car

2. Your lookin at a S2 which is easily $24k+ (good luck getting a loan for that amount at your age)

3. Insurance with any high performance car at your age will be sky high for a NA even higher on Turbo (considering if you even get insured)

4. purchasing a car from japan when your given a description and maybe a few pics is always risky. (hidden dangers)

5. 15 year rule will be very hard to get a 97 model in so unless your looking at a stock as a rock car maybe try tradingpost etc etc.

Your looking fairly early considering you only just about to get your learners. I been interested in skylines for years now and im really only startin to look now but wont be purchasing for at least another 6 months...

Yeah pretty much what everyone else said, However about the whole loan thing, I was kinda in the same situation as you...sort of. I was, at your age and still am obsessed with cars. I too wanted a phat as car as my first, and no mine wasn't a skyline, but yeah I saved 4 ages and bought an MX-6 turbo. No I didn't have insurance on it...I didn't even try. Then got a VL turbo, sold that got a NA VL, (still have it) Then got a loan 2 days after my 18 B'day and bought silvia SR20DET. Now have skyline and more than happy. Point is if you pick a decent car that you know you will be happy with from the start...do it.

About Insurance, well I still only have CTP on my skyline, which doesn't worry me because I couldn't afford full comp no chance. It is a risk, but I believe it is worth it (not even going to pay twice the price of my daily driver just to insure my skyline for a year)

1. As long as you're a good driver and feel confident with it then yes.

2. Don't know. Try private sales in Australia. Much less risk that way, can inspect the car and take it for a test drive. That's the way i did it. Plus i got a mad price on a '96 model.

3. I don't think there's a single (unmodded) Hyundai that could keep up with a stock R33 GTS-t, correct me if i'm wrong!

4. Isurance. It's the killer. Well, seeings as you're just going for your L's im guessing you're about 15, right? that means you'll be 17-18. Expect insurance (full comprehensive) of over $4000 a year. Steep, but worthwhile if you wanna be insured against theft (or you could get 3rd Party fire and theft long as you aint in Canberra or WA. Damn Canberra! DAMN THEM AND THEIR WIERD LAWS!!! :D)

5. Just like any car the price will drop. I'd guess around $20k for one in good condition.

A new car worth $15,000 - $20,000.

Well if I purchase a skyline from this forum I presume that everyone treats their car as their own child :D

Would a well maintained skyline purchased from this forum work as good as a cheap new car? As skylines are second-hand the car parts would have been used however will it still be as durable as a cheap new car? I heard Nissan makes quality parts have longer life span?

I disagree, for a first car you want something that you can drive and not have too much power underneath you ready to become another statistic, and or damage the car.

I'd much rather something with less power for a beginner to learn in. And as already been mentioned, power to weight may mean you cannot drive it anyway.

As for power etc, depends what kind of car you want gtr would be a dream, the old rb20det would be good for a first car I reckon. But the odd skyline would still get beaten by a few imports, maybe even a vlt here and there.

Insurance, if your 16-17-18 will be a bitch, probably looking at 1,500 upwards.

In my opinion, by a little gemini have your fun, thrash it, give it a carby and an exhaust and do some mild work, if you can handle a little bit of power that way, then use the money you saved in that year or so of driving the gemini. To put towards getting a skyline.

You may also want to consider whether you want to be in debt for the next 10 years of your life... Unless you've got good parents.

Best of luck with what you choose, but honestly I reckon a nice car like a skyline should be saved until your ready to look after it and respect it.

thankyou for the quick responses.

From the responses so far, I think it will be more cost effective to wait until I am 21 to purchase my first skyline. Until then looks like i will be stuck with my parents car. :D

By then I might have enough money to purchase a r33 gtr. How much does a stock/lightly modded r33 GTR cost?

Thankyou

Mate its best to look at a few things, Rego, Insurance, Fuel, extras..

If you can afford to pay off your loan and still have a safe boundary ie money to fall back on if you need to repair something then go for it and get a line as the first car. Its just the little things that you may not notice will hurt you.

I've had/still have a Nissan Pulsar GL 1991. 1.6l, manual. No balls but a fun car to throw around, crazy understeer and shudder in the wet when cornering :) It was my bro's car, but i got it at 18, i'm 20 now and turning 21 in November.

I too wanted a R33 GTS-T when i was 18 and had it worked out pretty much, didn't need a loan as i've had a good paying job since i was 18 and was paying up front. Parents were putting in $5k. But my dad was not too keen on contributing to a rwd turbo at 18 after only about 6-7 months of driving a Pulsar. So i waited and saved, drove my Pulsar and just put down a deposit for a R34 GT-T plate today ;) In restrospect i think the way it's panned out its probably for the better. I've prob only done about 15,000km's in the Pulsar but i've done lots of varied driving, city, country, night, long drives, heavy traffic, etc. Had a bit of taste of power with my dad's, 530i (170kw's) brilliant car to drive and i think it's been good to kinda take small steps with cars. Pulsar, to a bit of "spirited" driving with the 530i.

I think looking around 20-21 for your turbo Skyline would be the way to go i think. Get maybe a Pulsar SSS or even the 1.8ltrs are DOHC. Good cars, solid as a rock. I think find something to get some experience in for a few years, and if you have a few scares on the road in those first few years you won't have a $20K loan to worry about if something happens.

just my two-fity

good luck with it!

    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
    • Hi,  Just joined the forum so I could share my "fix" of this problem. Might be of use to someone. Had the same hunting at idle issue on my V36 with VQ35HR engine after swapping the engine because the original one got overheated.  While changing the engine I made the mistake of cleaning the throttle bodies and tried all the tricks i could find to do a throttle relearn with no luck. Gave in and took it to a shop and they couldn't sort it. Then took it to my local Nissan dealership and they couldn't get it to idle properly. They said I'd need to replace the throttle bodies and the ecu probably costing more than the car is worth. So I had the idea of replacing the carbon I cleaned out with a thin layer of super glue and it's back to normal idle now. Bit rough but saved the car from the wreckers 🤣
    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.
