recently finished my build and went in for a tune. asked the mechanic to boost it to 17 psi as Ive been told by mates in the know" she be right"

old mate mechanic only tuned it up to 14psi not recommending going any higher unless i really want to lol

ok ive done:

PWR FMIC

Sard 555cc injectors

Nismo fuel pump

Apexi PFC

Z32 AFM

Spit Fire Coils

Tomei Pon cams

Custom Hiflow turbo (zorst side larger)

Blitz EBC

Ive got stock internals stock head gasket and i ran 235rwkw as 14psi. can i run 17psi with what i got?

haha not a ebay special. a mate of a mate worked for garret and done up 10 with dump pipe as a side project. ball bearing rated to 500hp

i got the last one and all feedback has been positive.

Just be careful. Fitting a 500hp cartridge to bored out stock housings never ends as well as expected.

Tune to to about 18psi but only within detonation and inlet air temp limits.

It's hard to say where the efficiency is in an unknown bastardized turbo.

There isn't really a set number, its more like how high does your tuner want to go with it. A mates R33 was on 1.5Bar for a good 4 years without a problem, only blew when he turned it up to 2bar without retuning it or anything lol.

Mines tuned for 17psi. Has been like that for a few months now, and had a good beating at the track where it was getting up to 1.4bar briefly too.

Lithiums R33 was tuned for 17-18psi for over 100,000km, and not many of them were nana km either.

Its all in the tune :) Rather than go be a KW queen, settle for a lower number with safer ignition if you cant afford/dont want to rebuild/replace.

I gave mine 1.45bar in winter and 1.3bar in summer all year round no dramas, didn't see anything go pop.. A/Fs were 12 and dipping to 11.5 at MBT and back up to 12 towards redline. A few people have seen how I drive my car too, driven like Nissan intended it to be driven.

As stated the boost level isnt your limiting factor, its where your turbo runs out of puff (so to speak).

There will come a point where the turbo is simply pumping hot air and it will mean a bad tune ETC. With the right turbo theres nothing to stop you putting over 20psi into the stock motor, even that is nothing special.

this is a very valid topic and i think there are a lot of myths out there

and a lot of people get caught up on i want xxx rwkw and i have to run xyz psi

there is no magic limit or safe level for an engine for boost

why? because boost is simply the amount of resistance, nothing more

the less boost you can run the better

the more boost you run, the more stress and less efficient it becomes

the old hat method is keep winding in boost until you peak torque, airtemp doesnt ramp and you continue gaining power

ie why run 22psi when you stop making power/torque with anything past 16psi?

the point is

your tuner should dictate this type of value and tune as best he or she can within the turbochargers limits

exhaust back pressure is also a big concern so why run more boost if its of no gain

    • I'm actually not sure - I think it was "Stealth Performance" (It really is near impossible to find a FEMALE 1/8BSPT to 1/8NPT male at ALL) but having the thing leveraged on a 90 degree angle on a small aluminium fitting is not too smart. Also in not too smart, I've drilled out the center of the broken fitting so there's maybe 0.00001mm of thread to bite into, so yeah. I may have to get it drilled/tapped/plugged entirely. Given I could conceivably tap a thread/adapter/pressure line in any point in the oil system I suppose it's feasible to run a line to the Nissan Sensor to keep the dash working. Do these exist in AN fittings and the like? Like an AN fitting that has a NPT (or other?) thread as well for putting a sensor in?
    • I would agree.  There will be an amount of boost you could run safely with an otherwise factory system, but it would be low enough to not be worth the cost.  And if you are reliving your 20s, you know a 'little bit' was never enough. Personally, if I didn't want to spend the money, then stick with NA bolt-ons, and maybe a tune.
    • Fuark, at least the motor survived. What brand was the fitting that snapped?
    • Wrong question. There's no point in spending the rather large sum of cash and effort to add turbo, without taking it to the "sensible" limit of the motor itself. If you have to upgrade injectors, etc, then so be it. That is a tiny fraction of what it will cost you to turbo it.
    • Measure voltage at the starter solenoid terminal when the key is at start and it has clicked. If it is really low, then the suspicion falls on the ignition switch (contacts or wiring thereof) as causing a voltage drop instead of sending enough volts to throw the solenoid all the way to engage the starter itself. If it is a decent voltage, then the suspicion is on the solenoid. Might have s horted coil, or might hva dirty contacts. Rip the starter off, dismantle, clean up contacts and inspect winding. It might not be possible to see if there is a short in the winding though. I have a spare starter here that I could measure the resistance of the coil, as a guide to about what it should be, if you need a comparison. <parts hoarder>No you cannot have it.</parts hoarder>
