I got hold of a turbosmart boost controller, the bleed vavle style ones, I've put the boost up around 2 - 3 psi and I cant rev past 5000rpm!!!! It pings too much!!!! :ghost:

My mods are:

3" Mandrel bent cat back exhaust

Pod Air Filter

What should I do to recitfy the problem? (Please dont say put the boost back down, coz then it defeats the purpose of modifying it doesnt it! duh!)

Thanks guys!

put the boost back down til you get an intercooler.

or, get an air box to lower your intake temps....

but either way, a 2 psi increase (bringing it to around 9/10psi) causing detonation with those mods is pretty bad.

what Christian said,

turn the boost down until you get a FMIC and a cold air intake system (either ducting from the front bar into a modified airbox or whatever else you come up with).

whats more important to you??? having a car that drives reliably or a sick hectic motor that'll shit itself sooner rather than later?

Since you've put it so well - Sick hektic :cheers: - Hahahaha joking joking

Yeh I just found out I've done 15,000kms since buying the car in which I dont know when the Sparkies have been changed so they will be changed soon.

Are Iridium plugs really worth the $16 each asking price??

yeh mate.

but in all honesty a FULL service should have been the first thing you did when buying the car.. unless there's a log book history of it being done in a reasonable time frame

I had nfi when anything on my car was done so we did everything the week I got it

If your car is pinging like mad with 2psi extra you've got some *big* problems.

Are you sure its not a missfire? Thats much more common at 5000rpm, do a search, there are heaps of suggestions for solutions.

From experience, prolonged use of octane boost will stuff your plugs, a real pain especially if you have forked out for iridiums.

As with what Prank said, if you are pinging with such a small increase in boost, that is defiantely a cause for concern and I would bet that there is something else going on. My advice is get the car to a reputable workshop asap for a complete checkup before things really go pear shaped.

Do a *full* service on it. Including Dyno tune / Power run - FIRST UP.

* Plugs

* Fuel Filter

* Oil Filter

* Air filter

* Oil

* Gearbox and Diff oil too

* Drain & Flush your radiator

* Cheack your fuel pressure

* Make sure you have no vaccuum leaks or pipe leaks - ie intercooler piping etc

Do not attempt to increase boost / power without knowing where you are starting from. ie get a baseline.

Do a compression test / leakdown test also. Just to be sure and for a baseline.

Plan your mods - do them bit at a time and get dyno results between mods.

Do not use octane boost to fix continual pinging.

Report back here with your progress and we will keep advising you.

You should be able to run 2-3 PSI on top of stock without any problems - bit get a bigger intercooler to be sure - a GTR cooler for example.

Hope it all goes well

When all else fails a 50 HP shot of NOS should fix your pinging :D

Cheers,

I would suggest having your timing belt changed also, espically if your car is getting towards the 100,000kms mark.

Are you running an aftermarket boost gauge? sounds like a dumb question... but the stock one is not worth much I found.

Cheers.

I would be careful with that one... I first installed the boost controller (as I just couldn't wait to feel that bigger boost) even though I had the boost guage there ready to go... took it for a spin with what we guessed to be about 0.8 - 0.9 bar, was sitting just off the line with the +7 on the dash. Went like gold, but missed at around 4500-5000 rpm. installed a boost guage and it read 1.45 bar... hence the miss!

Just be careful and even see if you can borrow a guage of someone just to set your boost!

Dan.

    • Hi 🙋‍♂️. Just bought my Unicorn but the interior need some minor work so it would match my expectations ;). I noticed it is hard to get used oem floor mats in good condition so i started to dig if there's any chance to buy set of new ones. I found two websites - nengun and amayama and it looks like one can still buy factory new floor mats in Japan, but thers a small issue. Some mats (i assume genuine, oem ones) are marked as G4900 and these are "discontinued". The ones you can buy are marked as G4911 but i have no idea if these are also oem, made by other producer or some lower quality replacements that looks entirely different. Can anyone help? 😃  P.s. there is also some strange indication - 0V005, 0V015 and 0V505. Any idea what does it mean? Would appreciate any help with this 🙏
    • Hi, Marek here 🙋‍♂️. I finally fulfilled my longtime dream - recently bought Stagea and now waiting for it to arrive in Poland. There's only few of these in my country, and one of the owners  recommended mi this forum as a source of all the info i'd need since now i own one  so here i am.
    • Version 1 aluminium airbox is.......not acceptable No pics as I "didn't like the look.....alot" Even after all my "CAD", and measurements, the leg near the fusebox just didn't sit right as it ended up about 10mm long and made the angle of the dangle look wrong, the height was a little short as well, meh, I wasn't that confident that Version 1 was going to be an instant winner I might give Version 2 another go, there's plenty of aluminium at work, but, after having in on and off a few times, and laying in the old OEM airbox without the new pod filter and MAF, there may be an option to modify the OEM air box and still use the Autoexe front cover and filter.... maybe This >  Needs to fit in here, but using the panel, and not the pod, the MAF will need to fit in the airbox though> I'm thinking as the old OEM box and Autoexe cover that is sitting in the shed is just sitting around doing nothing, and they are relatively abundant and cheap to replace if I mess it up and need another, it may well fit with some modifications to how the Autoexe brackets mounts to the rad support, and some dremiling to move it get in there, should give me some more room for activities, as I don't want to move the MAF and affect the tune Sealing the hole it requires to stick it in the air box is simple, a tight fit and some pinch weld will seal it up tight  I am calling this a later problem though
    • and it ends up being already priced in as though you're just on 91RON without any ethanol. Car will lose a bit of economy as the short and long term fuel trims bring down the AFR back to stoich or whatever it is for cruise/idle for the engine.
    • Oh, you are right. But, in Australia E10 is based on 91RON fuel and ends up being 94RON. Hence it being the cheaper option for economy cars. The more performance oriented cars go for the 98RON fuel that has no ethanol mixed in. The only step up we have left then at some petrol stations is E85.
