Im plannig on turboing a 4cyl project car in the near future, room may be a lil bit tight up the front to fit a cooler. Ill be most likely using a kando td05 running 0.5 bar boost, so my question is, if i cant get a cooler up front, will a true CAI take away some of the intake temps (sucking outside engine bay) or will temps remain the same ?

You can run no I/C - RB30ET came without one factory... CAI will help.

You'll just have to check the intake temps of the set-up to see if it's sake etc. I think VLs ran 5psi factory from a T3 that was rather small. Conservative ECU tuning etc.

And in saying that - TD05, 4cyc, .5 bar... Turbo is perhaps just a little on the big side?

You'd be better off with something smaller. I think WRX's come with a small-ish TD04 these days?

Depends on the flange/manifold etc of course.

Why not use water / methanol injection?

Justin P- id have to do my research on water/ methanol kits as i know nothing about them

Nismoid- Id like to think a td05 wouldnt be too big, u would expect it to start spooling at about 3k on a 1.8/2.0L ?

I just wanted to see if my theory that engine bay air temps vs outside cai temps would make a difference, i know in N/A cars it does. Just wanted to see if the same rule applied

80s era turbo'd cars were mostly non intercooled but all ran low compression engines. Running any sort of boost on a high comp engine is a big ask let alone with no intercooler. Hook up a water to air intercooler, have a look on ebay there's heaps of compact units. water/meth or e85 would go down nicely with a high comp motor as well.

Water to air cooler works well if you wana give it a go.... custom make one, any size to suit.... would look pretty grouse aswell!!!

That looks awesome..

Is it neccesary to have some kind of heat-sink on the reservoir that houses the water? To improve efficiency?

Of course it applies. When you compress air its temperature increases. Simply from compressing it. Then with a turbo, because they are on X% efficient, you get further temperature rise above the ideal. So, if you start with hot engine bay air and compress it, you end up with the initial temperature + the turbo's temperature rise. If you start witj cold external air, then the final temperature is about the same amount lower as the starting temperature.

The problem is, that the turbo's temperature rise at 0.5 bar is at least 50C, so regardless of the starting temperature, the boosted air will be quite hot, at least as far as the engine/timing/pinging situation.

That's a big turbo for 5psi, I'm assuming you have plans for future development in which a cooler would be mandatory anyway. If not, ditch the bigger turbo and just using something tiny that will spool quick, I just gave away a T25 that for just such an application, 5psi fast spool.

If you honestly cannot get a front mount on it, which I'd doubt anyway, then it's unlikely you can't fit a side mount SOMEWHERE. Run it is a top mount, run it behind a headlight etc etc.

Or you could do what the yanks do and rear mount the turbo and the charge temps will drop a fair bit on the return trip to the front of the car, crazy as it sounds it seems to work OK.

CAI will have the smallest of impacts but you could also run a NACA above the turbo and try to cool the comp housing as much as possible, will still pale in comparison to having even the most basic of cheapo second hand sidemounts.

As Ash said, need more info.

Can't see how you couldn't at least fit a side mount in front of the radiator opposite the pod or under either headlight?

Also looks like plenty of space behind the passenger headlight where you fit a small side mount and duct it up from under the headlight or is a battery missing?

Dan- I came across a few baby coolers last night on ebay so i should be able to get them to fit, its also routing the pipes on the drivers side cause the power steering pump and alternator is in the way. Ill just have to wait n see how i go.

The point of this thread was to see if a cai like the one i made for my other lantra would get me outta trouble but looks like it wont

    • Hi from Canada, Both of my calipers are starting to fail. My car is a 2005 M35 Stagea ARX and I can't seem to find any parts or any cross reference caliper that would fit my car. Is there a company or a similar caliper that would fit and I could replace the OEM one. Or if anyone knows where I can find a new OEM. Any help is very appreciated. Let me know!
    • Maf is a question mark but TPS  I have set at 0.47, the fact that I’m getting proper voltage range out of it with the key on leads me to believe it’s functioning properly. I’m getting proper voltages on basically everything. I still need to look up voltage ranges for z32 maf and test that
    • Honestly no not at all, but it’s a very basic tune, it’s stock injectors q45 tps and z32 maf. Other than that it’s a completely stock base map. The file is from nistune and from my understanding if it was tune related I would be able to unplug maf and tps and it would still start even if it was a really shitty start. I have tried starting it with coolant temp, maf, and tps unplugged none of those 3 togethor or individually changes anything

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day   Highway gets as low as 10l/100km on my end so I'm not as worried about it being a mechanical issue. More likely just the tune on the haltech.
