I would go flat out to adelaide etc, have a look around, then go via the appostles, GOR, otways(stay over night in apollo bay and do the otway fly etc), then head down the bellarine peninsula, get the ferry to sorrento, then drive up to mount dandenong(stay a night at Gracehill in olinda, eat dinner at wild oak ;) ) go through the yarra valley(mt donna buang, the road from warburton to noojee,) jump on the monash fwy and take it into the city and do you city trip.

THEN, hall arse the whole way home ;)

oh, you must do phillip island, and the prom, and go to flinders blowhole on the [mornington]peninsula.

ill agree with this but you are starting to make an epic long trip.

Also consider taking the train home from Adelaide. Its quicker, you can relax and i assume going back is alot more boring cause you just passed everything not too long before.

Or another idea would be to fly to Melb rent a car and do some of the above drives. something like

Hmm think i miss Melb/vic been a while since i have been there, lol.

otways/GOR dont get decent until apollo bay(well, the anglesea-apollo bay section is nice, and then through to the apostles is awesome), torquay is a hole.

Would have loved to live down around Apollo bay, but it doesn't work for my career at this point in time... Hence moved from Toorak to Mount Dandenong(prior to coming here), peace and quiet and still commutable.

GTR across the Nullabor - both ways

I would recommend using the BP and Shell websites to see which stations sell 98 octane fuel (if you need it). They are very good and give the kilometres to the next one, plus a map. (Which is fairly simple, given that there is one road for the main part!)

Also look at www.nullarbornet.com.au. That is a great website that gives distances between each town, plus information on places to stay, what to do, mudmaps around the areas, etc. Really good resource.

I found every one of the roadhouses to be really good. I did my own study of the ham, cheese and tomato toasty across Australia! All of the people at them were friendly and helpful, with only one exception in the whole trip. The best thing to consider, when judging any roadhouse or motel, is that you should remember that you are going into the back of beyond. If you are expecting them to be like city centre hotels and serve food and coffee to rival Melbourne cafes, you will be disappointed. Go with an open mind and you will be pleasantly surprised.

Places to visit: Streaky Bay on South Australia. Great little spot and only a short diversion from the main route. If you have the time, drive around the peninsular to Port Lincoln. It is supposed to be well worth it (but I have not been). And do the Great Ocean Road! Take a few days to do it and explore some of the smaller places.

Also, go to the Head of the Bight ranger station / tourist station. If the whales are around it is amazing and it is spectacular anyway.

I drove to Geelong in 4 days and then we took 6 days to drive back from Melbourne, but could have done with a few more days to explore. I am glad I did not take the train to Adelaide on the way East, but it would be a good option to reduce your time on the road, if you want to.

Ignore what people say about it being boring. It is the only way to see Australia. You don't experience anything from 35,000 feet! The towns, the people, the vast, changing vistas - it was an adventure that I intend to repeat some time. But maybe next time in the Land Rover, and maybe the GTR on a trailer to try out some of the Eastern States race tracks - now there's a thought!

Well, after some hardcore negotiations, we have decided to alter the plans a little.

Since crossing the nullabor (in both directions) is going to take so much time out of the small amount of holidays I have available to me, we are now going to fly to Melbourne, hire a car and drive back as far as Adelaide (I didnt even know you could do one way car hire, but there you have it!) and take at least 5 days to do it, so all suggestions for between those 2 cities are now valid (and/or cool stuff to see and do outside of the CBD)

GTR across the Nullabor - both ways

Damn it! I was looking for this thread before I drove over from Adelaide Australia Day last year! In addition to all of the above, make sure you have good tyres on your car - I learnt the hard way!

Also, fuel is around $2 per litre (for 98) across the Nullarbor, and you won't always get 98. It is a drive I think everyone has to do at least once, and other than tyre blows both my 260RS and R34 GTR were a dream to drive. Oh, and one last thing, there's no mobile coverage from just out of Norseman until your across the Nullarbor, from memory it might have been nearing Ceduna but can't remember.

Some pics from my trip, my old man helped me drive the GTR over (and he's over 70!).

Dale the drive is awesome. As i did Perth to Mt Isa in a truck only a month or so ago i could not encourage you harder to do this!

Make sure you stop at the usual spots like border village for photos with Rooey II and Kimba for the big galah (might be a bit off the road for a car route....follow the truck route through town :) )

We have pushed the date back untill the end of the year, due to exams and stuff for the loinspawn, and then we will be heading off! I cant wait!!

So, questions that remain to be answered - has anyone done the ferry across the bay in SA? Worth it?

And what sort of date do people recommend? I am thinking before xmas, but maybe just on, or just after?

Obviously traffic wont be much of an issue for most of the driive, but should I avoid adelaide - melbourne between xmas and new years?

I wouldnt bother being a tourist in vic over the holiday periods :)

I can send you heaps of amazing places that should be dead though... its just some areas will be chockers.

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year. 
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
