Hey guys, I'm about to fork out a wad of cash for a new clutch, but before I do, I'd thought I might check on peoples opinion to make sure I do actually need one.

I've got a 1998 R34 GTT with stock clutch, 200kw everyday "spirited" driving (car was relatively stock before I modified it). A few days ago I did a muppet style skid out of band practice but the clutch didn't fully engage and instead of sweet burning rubber I got a hit of clutch in my face. Since then most drives has resulted in a slight clutch smell when stop driving.

However the car still drives fine, does not slip changing gears, and passes the 1st gear clutch test (car stalls fine).

Am I right to go ahead and get a new HD clutch or is it worth waiting for it to slip, or perhaps even find if the smell is something else?

Cheers

You've probably just glazed up the flywheel. Just keep driving it, less hard, for a while and see if the glaze wears off with normal use.

You can try to deglaze a clutch by druving up a long steep hill in 4th with some boost on and just poking the clutch pedal in (while still on the gas) until the clutch starts to slip a bit, then release the clutch, leave it a few seconds, do it again. You've aiming to get it warmish without baking it and use the high speed slip to move the sticky glaze.

don't know about the first gear test ( never heard of that )

but if you want to test clutch and check if it is slipping, 4th gear under load... eg. drive in 4th on freeway and push it onto boost, if its going to slip thats the most likely.

To do the 1st gear test from my memory what you do is, put it into first and drop the clutch without any acceleration. If it doesnt die your clutch is on/ or on it's last legs, If it jumps forwad and cuts out it's in reasonable shape ( My mechanic showed me how to do this and i'm sure this is what your talking about)

    • I am yet to see anyone ever regret a quaife or helical. ...other than drifting/skidpan duties. I kind of want to upgrade my factory helical with a Quaife (but really it's not ultimately that different, and is a MASSIVE UNDERTAKING), that's how good the hype is about them, that I want to try them 'just to see'
    • D2 and Ksport are essentially the same thing and basically just generic Taiwanese manufacture. Better than ChinaBay crap, but... not top shelf. Öhlins have got to be some of the best dampers around, so likely to be a good option. It's going to get to the point though where I suggest you buy from Oz. We have at least 2x excellent options here. If I were you though, I'd be talking to KW about doing something for the R33. There's bugger all difference between that and the 32. In GTR land, anyway.
    • KW only offers a set for the R32 GTR. Popular options are D2 racing, Ksport or Öhlins. I have a D2 Racing coilover set, though I don't know for sure which one.
    • Well, the good news is you have more than one very good option for new coilovers in and around your country. Worth the drive over to KW to talk about GTR stuff.
    • Fair enough, I am in no way a tire expert so I'm not familiar with all the terms and conditions. I'll definitely note down the AD09 to potentially try in the future. Rain is not too big of a concern for now as I will probably only drive in the rain when I have to. And considering I still lack experience driving the GTR I'd more than likely take it easy too. I have coilovers in the car but as I barely got to drive so far I never bothered to even check if they are adjustable haha. The suspension is almost entirely old and worn as well so I suppose when I eventually fix that in the future that would make a huge difference.
