Tomei Cam Gears And Cams, T-Belt Position?!

Hello gents,

I wanted to get some feedback related to the pics.. so just recently completed a full R33 rebuilding.. i've included Tomei cam gears and poncams.. the only problem visually I appear to have is the fact that Timing belt is about 1mm off the cam gears closer to the radiator. Tbelt does not appear to be walking as i've taken it all apart again to check the bottom pulleys and all is in check.. belt is in-line with all the side covers and doest move around, it just that it sits a nudge past the edge.

Anyone else encounter this? Prob is i never took a pic with OEM cam gears to see how it sat and measure the gears for comparison purpose.

I think the idler is missing the washer that sits behind it. Do u remember fitting this washer?

If u have a good look the idler pulley will be sitting closer to the head than the rest of the pulleys.

I thought the poncams were dialled in and were best suited to the stock position eliminating the need for cam gears? I could be wrong as i am mildly retarded but just thought thats what i had read?

Hey, you know what they say if it doesnt look right then it probably isnt and that doesnt look right.

Pull the front down again and recheck everything. if you have a service manual with a exploded view it will show all the washers and spacers go.

Once it is apart hopefully it will be obvious.

I have seen a few engines with the tomei gears and none have sat like this.

As i remember everything was installed correctly reusing the washers.. the belt is not walking its just sitting in that position. Does anyone have a picture with same set up installed to see the position?

Both cams and cam gears?

Not the same setup, but this is my NEO and shows where the belt should sit if fitted correctly -

When the belt was installed, it was even with the cam gears.. however, the motor was run, the belt centered itself in the position where it seems to be off.. (original pictures).

The washers from the FSM are all there.. so i'm not sure what gives..

It indicates that something isnt lined up... The belt will generally straigten itself to the correct position as the crank gear kind of acts as a guide.... Either way, something is not right and i wouldnt be leaving it that way!

When u take the lower timing belt cover off u will notice that the idler or tensioner or both are sitting too close to the block in relation to the rest of the pulleys.

There is a washer that normally sits between the block and the idler

I didnt get a chance to take it all apart but took some more pics to share.. From what I can see on the manual instructions on tensioner there is only a spring in front of it.. od idler, nothing.. So i'm not sure why everyone is advising it could be a washer when its not pictured in the manual? There is a washer in front of the bolt that wil not offset distance between pulley and block.

This is weird..

I've recently installed some tomei cam gears. The timing belt should definitely not be sitting so far forward. I noticed at one stage that the spring on the tensioner can actually fall behind the tensioner pulley which then makes the tensioner pulley not sit square. This can then make the timing belt move forward. Maybe the spring on the tensioner is between the tensioner and block - try checking that maybe...If you just keep cranking it over manually, the belt should stay pretty well centered. Basically something is making the timing belt 'move' forward from its standard position. The question is what...

Good luck. I would not conitnue until I had this resolved and fixed....

Even if the idlers were/are offset wrong (which they are not) it would not do anything for the belts 'true' running spot. has to come from the base..

I'm taking it apart on Thursday to check spring, and measure everything to see what gives.. also keep in mind originally I had the belt flpped the wrong way ( didnt see the mark on the Tbelt) and really thought that could have been it, when belt was reintalled it was put in the correct position, however when motor starts it moves forward.. and stays in that position.. it doesnt walk like you would see on a stretched belt..

    • Got some decent progress after work yesterday and also today. Got the ECU all wired and passenger side interior all back together. Kept the wiring up nice and high to avoid people standing on it. Got the surge tank relays rewired and tidied up the pump wiring and cut a hole to bring the cables through.  I found a spare USB cable I had lying around so I decided to cut it up and see if I could use it for my CAN 1 bus. Turned out one of the pins I needed was to the shield of the cable so i cut it up and desoldered it and resoldered to the correct pins.  Had the issue with the powersteering hose hitting the A/C compressor and fan shroud. I pulled the bracket off and modified it to remove the front mounting point which now clears it all. Will keep an eye on it to see if theres any signs of fouling once it's up and running.
    • That's some good input mate. Nice.
    • So today I went well outside my comfort zone (again) to replace my valve cover gasket.  I have had a big leak over the exhaust leading to a lot of smoke and smell every time I drove it. The leak was in the rear driver's corner.  The job wasn't hard as such, just a bit finicky and time consuming.  The old gasket was rock hard and broken right where the leak was.  The leaky corner had so much sitting oil in it.  The good news to my amateur eyes was no buildup or sludge under the cover. It all looked fairly nice in there.   I haven't started it yet. I ran out of light and body when putting the coils and injector loom back in. Probs only 30min left for the morning.  I was so nervous putting the cover back on, I must have lifted it 5 times to make sure the gasket was still seated properly. God it's going to be nice to be leak free and not make other traffic light queuers think my car is about to explode.
    • Gave the Mazda it's first wash, it will need some clay, a light compound, and polish polish to remove a few swirl marks, but that will be a job for when I have a full day to get my DA polisher action on
    • Just did this job on my 32 with the boost doc kit. was quite simple to fit, hardest part was getting the rubber bungs back on the firewall. does anyone know how the heater will work now without the flap in the bend? Will I just have a heater on 24/7 now?
