Hi All,

Has anyone fitted a mechanical LSD hemisphere in our beloved M35's. I'm new to the M35 world, and have limited knowledge about them so far. I stuck my head under the car the other day and at a glance the diff looks like R180 based centre, Is this correct?

If so, does anyone have any leads on a 1.5 way LSD hemisphere. Prefer either Tomei, Nismo or Cusco. I have had a quick look around on the internet, can can only seem to locate 2 way units. One final question, are the diffs in M35 interchangeable with 350Z's of the same vintage?

I'm running a 350z diff in 3.5:1 ratio, probably the best option as the aftermarket diffs are usually too clunky for my liking. Did you want to keep the 3.0:1 ratio for any reason?

Thanks Scotty, Yes I happy to retain the std ratio, The car wont be going on th track or strip any time soon, besides if I change the ratio in the rear I then have to change the front aswell. From memory this is what you have planned, but as yet have not fitted the front diff.

Are you able to confirm that the diff internals listed for 350Z's will fit our M35's?

Nope, I haven't had the diff's apart but the part number for the M35 centre is different, there are probably differences between them. I was looking at a Cusco centre before we realised the 350z one fitted complete.

From what I can figure out 350z options are viable for our cars, as well as G35's from the states / V35s from Japan. However the big thing to get right is that you need a LSD to suit the original open style diff. There is a difference in the output shafts on the LSD models, 3 splines compared to 2 splines for the open type. So you need a LSD to suit a automatic 350z with nil lsd, OR a non lsd G35.

Check the ratios if considering a swap.. No 350zs run your ratio diff. You could look at a NM35 ARX or Hicas equipped cars VLSD which will run the stock ratio.

Finally, lots of people have said clutch type lsds are pretty harsh. Might cost a bit more, but a quaife could be a good option. Unless you want harsh for drift or something?

Ok I thought I was being clever and bought myself an open NM35 centre and then locate myself a mechanical Hemesphere. Thanks the the clarification regarding the spline count on the output shafts. Yes, you right that mech LSD's can be harsh [especially 2 way] as they can behave like locked centres off throttle entering corners and induce understeer characteristics. 1.5 way is more what I'm looking for with less angle [45 degrees] on the side gear engagement compared to the 2 way [60 degrees].

OK so the Tomei units I see listed for NM35 [HA,562020] is suited for the viscious LSD std centres and not std open centres. What to do what to do. I wonder if VLSD output shafts can fitted to open std centre centres or cut my losses and locate a VLSD centre and fit a mech lsd. The hunt continues

    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻

I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
