Remote Central Locking Scanners - Got Me Worried

Hi guys,

I'm a little bit paranoid at the moment.

Here is a background of events:

- I parked my car and locked/armed it etc.

- Eventually I came back to my car and noticed some shady looking guys waiting in their car parked behind mine (parallel parked - but with thier engine still running and headlights on) - they seemed to be giving me the eye. But I didn't really care to take more notice.

- At this point I did not un-lock my car - because I was chatting to my mate and had no intention to leave straight away - we just wanted to chill outside the car.

- About 15~20mins later, I decide to leave (the shady guys still with thier engine running)

- I un-locked/disarmed the car via the remote

- After about 5 seconds the guys just drive quickly away.

I'm "suspecting" they may have have had some sort of scanning device - waiting for me to unlock my car via the remote, to "copy" the signal from the key to car. Which I imagine they could use to potentially steal my car.

- Is it something I should be worried about? or just a big coincidence?

Chris Rogers is the SAU guy to PM about this but...

Our next door neighbour went away with friends in a convoy across the outback. At a common public carpark they also like yourself noticed a couple inside their 4WD, but didn't think anything of it. All the couples left their 4WDs for a walk and when they came back, 5 of the 6 Landcruisers were rifled of cash and valuables. Patrols and Pajeros remained untouched.

Is the remote a rolling code type?

If you have a name brand alarm from the past 15 years they have code rolling ( hopping ) and cant be scanned Domt sweat it

Not the same for remote door openers on a house

You would be more likely to be car jacked and your habits watched

And if the alarm keeps going off DO NOT disable the siren or disarm it , thieves set it off over and over till you get sick of it and think you have a problem , then kiss your car goodbye

GPS tracker and not the jaycar spec model is highly recommended , club lock and 3 point alarm min and common sense will stop most crims or joyriders, methheads

Anything the factory / dealer imstalls. Is junk

Amd could be bypassed by a crim

I think it was a coincidence , ( toyota has a weakenss as well but cant disclose what it is in public ) plus never leave anything in a car or truck even in a remote location , trailheads get hit all the f**king time here for dayhikes , the opportunity is too great for thieves to walk away from a car full of gear destine for the pawnshop for drug money , savages you can have anything nice anymore ffs

      I can get more photos of it here soon and I plan to make a thread detailing the process. I received the car this way and it sorely needs refinishing. That is probably the most appealing photo of it. Up close it is fading, cracked, and needs to be re-glued. Depending on their condition I'm on the fence between refinishing or making a new set.  Another angle hiding the pimples and razor pumps

      According to this thread the RS4V with build plate RC40 comes with the R200 diff @ 4.083 ratio as well (mine has said RC40 denotation). We may need to check if the axle stubs are the same pattern as well. The auto subframes have longer axles. However I think yours being a later Series 2 as well, we should have the same bolt pattern for the diff stubs. Unless your upgraded rear also has upgraded axles. Either way, I would not be opposed to pulling the covers to check so I can inspect that  fancy rear core  Also I don't have HICAS. I don't believe that should change things but I hope the people here with heaps more experience than me can correct me if I'm wrong   Let me know if you want to attempt to make this work and I can get some pictures of mine from under the car.

      It's not that straightforward. For example I have had this code because my ignitor/power transistor wires were unplugged. It knows something is wrong but has no idea what it means. If you want to actually diagnose this I recommend following the service manual flowchart for code 21. Ohm out the harness, coilpacks, inspect the ECU, etc. And again, it's entirely possible for there to be no problem at all but if you're running a different coilpack it'll trigger the code because it doesn't like what it sees.

      If it (the code) wasn't still current, it should have gone away by itself by now. No, nothing it 10/10. But it is quite likely. Everything else to do with the ignition could still be responsible (which is wires and connectors). The car is an old piece of shit now, so all the wires and connectors are also old pieces of shit.
