hi guys,

when i start my r32gtr - only on start up for about 2 sec i get this high pitch squeal which to me sounds like a fan belt, so i sprayed a bit of silicone spray...its not this.

what could it be?

if my explanation is not clear - i can record a short clip & post it here

The drive gear in the starter slips as the engine speed increases beyond cranking speed and it's not uncommon for them to squeal. Especially when they are full of clutch dust. Holding the key in start position for a second longer(ie allowing engine to reach idle before releasing key) should lengthen the noise if it's the cause.

so i sprayed a bit of silicone spray...its not this.

I wouldn't have used Silicone spray, you will never get the sh*t off the pulleys. The only thing worse than that would be Belt grip (makes me shudder just saying the name)

Just had a similar issue with my 33 GTR, Shouldn't really sound like a belt thou. More like a whine than a squeel. Mine was the starter not dis-engagaing after starting for a second or 2!! Very embarrassing in public places.. All i did was removed starter bolts and pushed starter back enough to get access to the gear and put quite a bit of graphite powder on and behind the gear. After about 5-10 start ups all gone ;-) Dont know what caused it to be honest.

Had previously thought about making a DIY to strip and re-oil but most out there will likely require brushes/bushes etc and didn't want to go too in depth. Removed/repaired an Sau members starter from 33gtr and there was a full handfull of clutch material in the housing and drive gear was bound up. Heaps of contact cleaner got it out. But greasing etc without disassembly would never have fixed the problem.

So that's a negative on four seasons lube. Save it for your next birthday:)

If you use your lube

yeah i did a full strip on it...didnt look to be in too bad condition..there was some clutch dust though...

I used grease but only on the cogs I think (still a mistake i know) I used something else on the shafts, was lithium or PFTE grease from a spray can from memory...

So whats the correct procedure then and i will do it again...

Fill both the bushes with oil then press your finger into them to force it through as they are porous. Grease on reduction gears which won't be where the noise is from.

Drive gear should lock up one way and free the other. Contact cleaner through the gap to get clutch dust out until its smooth. Touch of grease on worm drive under drive gear. Also touch of grease on solenoid pivot points. Noise will almost certainly be from drive gear if it's from the starter. If its still rough after cleaner get another for 30 or so

i still haven't gotten around to inspecting the noise i have BUT i did notice is that the noise is there when the engine is cold...once warm, the noise disappears which leads me to believe it is a noisy fan belt (or my supercharger belt as ARTZ commented above, haha)

Doubt the starter would be temp sensitive. Better check it out before something seizes.

    • Hey all  im wondering if you can help me please I have put a rb20 box in my r34 gtt as my auto packed up and a friend had a spare box I know it’s not ideal but it will get me up and running for now. we have done the conversation and everything is working great but my Speedo we got a s13 speed sensor but my Speedo reads double now and I bought a speed converter but still not having any luck.  so I thought I’ll reach out and pick your brains  any help would be appreciated please as I wanna drive my car again
    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
