My car is currently getting some tuning work done on it and they noticed a mild coolant leak from under the intake manifold, they pressure tested it and it came up fine but it certainly is leaking. I'm guessing the issue is because we reused the intake gasket from the old motor because it was only ~5000kms old.

Taking the intake manifold off is a gigantic pain in the ass, I'd say putting an engine in is less work so I want to know is if I use some kind of sealant around the edges where it is leaking am I going to have any success, if so what kind of sealant should I try?

I figure it can't exactly make it worse, buy me some time until I can remove it myself.

yeah there certainly isnt a lot of room under there,you might have to bite the bullet and take the manifold off as i cant see any kind of sealant staying in place as you would need the surface to be really clean for it too adhere

Rolls urs is easy. I just bolted mine back together after a leaking coolant hose. heres what under an rb26 plenum looks like 2539a276.jpg

And back ontopic, yes use a slight smear of sealant if there is coolant passing through

i had the same problem when i fitted my after market plenum , hadnt driven it for a few months , and when i finally got it on the road i started to notice a leak . thought normal gasket goo would of done the trick on the first initial install . had enough and endured the pain in the ass of removing it , i simply just loosened mine off and got some ultra strong sealant (red type silicon based) from supercheap , applied it with a little brush to both sides of the gasket and let her sit over night , no more leak . but im guessing your running the standard manifold?

id get a camera phone and take a few photos underneath like i did to determine exactly where , to be sure before you go into removing the manifold.

It is an R34 NEO rb25det with an R33 S2 intake bolted to it, so I'm guessing the rb26 intake is quite different DVS JEZ?

Are there any coolant lines running through the intake manifold on an R33? Or is it air only? If so where would the leak be from?

The leak is at the front of the engine, sorry I can't be more specific than that.

My mate offered to change it this week for free! win. Just got a 15% payrise at work with 7 months backpay so I think I will give him a decent lump of cash for it, more of a prick than removing/installin an engine imo.

You just have to replace a stud at the front and then it bolts on, or could be super dodgy and put a nut on the end of it.

I bolted R33 everything onto a Neo motor, kept the neo coils + CAS and everything else bolted on no issues.

oh, I was fairly sure we sized the gaskets up and they were off by a little bit more than that.

Also R.I.P.S had to make a custom plenum for a guy because they were different and he had to send them his Neo manifold.

I will have to investigate now.

If you could find out more that would be fantastic. I was told by a few workshops the manifolds were basically a bolt on job though.

If the gaskets were off surely I would be having massive problems also?

    • Let's be honest, most of the people designing parts like the above, aren't engineers. Sometimes they come from disciplines that gives them more qualitative feel for design than quantitive, however, plenty of them have just picked up a license to Fusion and started making things. And that's the honest part about the majority of these guys making parts like that, they don't have huge R&D teams and heaps of time or experience working out the numbers on it. Shit, most smaller teams that do have real engineers still roll with "yeah, it should be okay, and does the job, let's make them and just see"...   The smaller guys like KiwiCNC, aren't the likes of Bosch etc with proper engineering procedures, and oversights, and sign off. As such, it's why they can produce a product to market a lot quicker, but it always comes back to, question it all.   I'm still not a fan of that bolt on piece. Why not just machine it all in one go? With the right design it's possible. The only reason I can see is if they want different heights/length for the tie rod to bolt to. And if they have the cncs themselves,they can easily offer that exact feature, and just machine it all in one go.

    • This is how I last did this when I had a master cylinder fail and introduce air. Bleed before first stage, go oh shit through first stage, bleed at end of first stage, go oh shit through second stage, bleed at end of second stage, go oh shit through third stage, bleed at end of third stage, go oh shit through fourth stage, bleed at lunch, go oh shit through fifth stage, bleed at end of fifth stage, go oh shit through sixth stage....you get the idea. It did come good in the end. My Topdon scan tool can bleed the HY51 and V37, but it doesn't have a consult connector and I don't have an R34 to check that on. I think finding a tool in an Australian workshop other than Nissan that can bleed an R34 will be like rocking horse poo. No way will a generic ODB tool do it.
    • Hmm. Perhaps not the same engineers. The OE Nissan engineers did not forsee a future with spacers pushing the tie rod force application further away from the steering arm and creating that torque. The failures are happening since the advent of those things, and some 30 years after they designed the uprights. So latent casting deficiencies, 30+ yrs of wear and tear, + unexpected usage could quite easily = unforeseen failure. Meanwhile, the engineers who are designing the billet CNC or fabricated uprights are also designing, for the same parts makers, the correction tie rod ends. And they are designing and building these with motorsport (or, at the very least, the meth addled antics of drifters) in mind. So I would hope (in fact, I would expect) that their design work included the offset of that steering force. Doesn't mean that it is not totally valid to ask the question of them, before committing $$.
    • The downside of this is when you try to track the car, as soon as you hit ABS you get introduced to a unbled system. I want to avoid this. I do not want to bleed/flush/jack up the car twice just to bleed the f**kin car.
