Hello all,

I have a 300ZX with a R33 GTR RB26 conversion. Right now, the car is essentially stock.

The car is running on stock turbos, stock injectors, stock R33 intercooler, custom intake and exhaust (dual 3"/76mm into single 3.5"/90mm). I have Nistune which I am planning on installing soon with a Z32 AFM in blow through for now, with an upgrade to a Lightning MAF at the time I perform my other upgrades.

I would like to achieve 450-500WHP on 93 Octane pump fuel. This is what I think I need to get there...

Turbos - GT2860R turbos or Tomei ARMS 7655 kit. The ARMS kit will cost me $700-800 more than the Garretts, but it includes so much hardware/gaskets/etc. that it may be worth it.

Cams - Stock or Tomei Poncam-B

Injectors - 660cc

Intercooler - Stock R33 or weld a thicker core into the R33 end tanks

Clutch - I'd really like a coppermix twin, but I may just do a push conversion and use a domestically available Z32 NA clutch.

ARP Headstuds

Lightning MAF for use with Nistune.

I don't think I'm missing anything. I don't want to waste money on unneccessary parts.

Thoughts? The intended use of the car is a fun street toy with the occasional autocross or track day, I do not want to sacrifice driveability.

Turbo's - Don't go near Tomei. They are rubbish, search if you wanna see just how bad

Cams - Stock if you are keeping a stock head.

Injectors - 660cc might be enough, realistically go ID1000 (Bosch EV14). Idle and tune better

Cooler - Stock GTR is fine.

Clutch - Coppermix is certainly the choice if you can.

Headstuds - not required if the motor is stock.

You just need to decide if you want 450rwhp, or 500rwhp.

450rwhp you can do with the smaller Garretts (-9s), and are much more responsive over the -5s, which are the choice for 500rwhp+

You have a lighter car than say a R33 GTR. I have -9s on my GTS-R which is also lighter, and they are a LOT of fun :)

Excellent advice... Although I'm not sure how much lighter my zed is than an r33.

The cams are not needed, but would they benefit at this power level?

Thats a tidy conversion there, only thing im interested in is how much does your sump hold? looks very small?

5.5 quarts. This pan is a prototype for a production pan for these swaps. We will be increasing the capacity on the production pans.

Well, you win hands down for the coolest thread in a while. That is a very epic car.

Personally I think you should ditch the Nistune in place of a MAP based ECU. I would also reconsider going twins, there have been some great single results lately.

If you had the option of E85 running a Precision 5858 might be an awesome option

Looks like there is a fair bit of work in that twin set up, dunno how keen you would be to go single. The precision results lately are enough to turn even the most die hard fan of twins.

In your position I'd be getting the -9s with the 1000s (maybe even 2000 if you plan on e85 in the future)

Cams are debatable ( depends if you want every last hp)

Got a nismo copper-mix twin plate myself and it's bloody great!

Depending how cashed up you are I'd upgrade from the nistune too

There is nothing wrong with Nistune for the average punter not wanting to go dual fuel and maintain a budget... I dunno why people keep knocking it.

It's cheap and extremely cost effective and for 350rwkw can be made to work no drama in the world.

What fuel pump are you running?

If it's old maybe consider getting a new one (nismo/sard or Bosch as a cheaper option)

Poor fuel pump voltage killed my last engine so give it plenty of volts either way

Is it your daily driver? If not I would go for the ID2000s Link and E85 (for the information of the Aussies E85 is available at only one site in NZ so its by the drum for everyone else).

If it is the Nistune will be fine with ID1000s.

Precision singles are very popular atm but you would have to cost it out (manifold from Sinco or Rips) v a pair of 9s.

I've got the nistune myself, its fine for most entry level applications.. on par with a pfc imo.

in hindsight I do wish I had gone something more advanced.. im running a little 2L and wanting both a refined and powerful setup. I have a feeling the nistune will end up a compromise between the 2, but time will tell.

400kw is the new 300... 300 the new 200. That being said talking 350 I'd just aim for 4 and pick a swish ecu to boot.

try the Tomei type R poncams, 250 x 9.15

ID 1000s would be the go for what your aiming

-9s/ GT-ss or T517zs are proven performers at that level

stock or slightly over for the intercooler, like the ARC 76mm

Nistune or Power fc with Z32 AFMs will work fine, comes down to how good the tuner is anyway really

I have the Excedy twin, identical to the coppermax, and is a great clutch

that setup in that car tuned right would be ALOT of fun

Thank you everyone for the many compliments on the car, it is my first RB, but certainly not my first engine conversions or fast ride. I work as an Engineer as a full time job, and run a small business doing engine conversions into anything on the side with a good friend of mine.

I will be tuning the car myself, and I've had plenty of luck with DSMLink on 4G63 powered cars here in the states... routinely making 500-600WHP. Nistune is a very similar interface, just less features. We'll see how I do with it and then go from there. I'm not going to lie, a full standalone intimidates me a bit. Especially learning on such an expensive engine.

I'll do some research on the precision singles... all the rage here are the new BorgWarner EFR turbos, I've been looking at them as well. I haven't totally ruled out a single, but I don't think I can accomplish it for less than what the garretts will cost, and if they'll get me to my goal, why not?

NJ is the only state in the union to not have E85, so that isn't an option. I know I'll end up with injectors in the 660-1000cc range...

The car is not a daily driver, just a weekend toy. I have a 96 Landcruiser with a Mitsu Diesel in it as my daily.

Could be viable to go with a single - depends what you have to pay for the twins.

You could get 6 Boost or Sinco to make you a manifold but maybe you need to get someone local to custom make it to ensure it fits in your engine bay!

    • Have a look at that (shitty) pic I posted. You can see AN -4 braided line coming to a -4 to 1/8 BSPT adapter, into a 1/8 BSPT T piece. The Haltech pressure sender is screwed into the long arm of the sender and factory sender (pre your pic) into the T side. You can also see the cable tie holding the whole contraption in place. Is it better than mounting the sender direct to your engine fitting......yes because it removes that vibration as the engine revs out 50 times every lap and that factory sender is pretty big. Is it necessary for you......well I've got no idea, I just don't like something important failing twice so over-engineer it to the moon!
    • Yup. You can get creative and make a sort of "bracket" with cable ties. Put 2 around the sender with a third passing underneath them strapped down against the sender. Then that third one is able to be passed through some hole at right angles to the orientation of the sender. Or some variation on the theme. Yes.... ummm, with caveats? I mean, the sender is BSP and you would likely have AN stuff on the hose, so yes, there would be the adapter you mention. But the block end will either be 1/8 NPT if that thread is still OK in there, or you can drill and tap it out to 1/4 BSP or NPT and use appropriate adapter there. As it stands, your mention of 1/8 BSPT male seems... wrong for the 1/8 NPT female it has to go into. The hose will be better, because even with the bush, the mass of the sender will be "hanging" off a hard threaded connection and will add some stress/strain to that. It might fail in the future. The hose eliminates almost all such risk - but adds in several more threaded connections to leak from! It really should be tapered, but it looks very long in that photo with no taper visible. If you have it in hand you should be able to see if it tapered or not. There technically is no possibility of a mechanical seal with a parallel male in a parallel female, so it is hard to believe that it is parallel male, but weirder things have happened. Maybe it's meant to seat on some surface when screwed in on the original installation? Anyway, at that thread size, parallel in parallel, with tape and goop, will seal just fine.
    • How do you propose I cable tie this: To something securely? Is it really just a case of finding a couple of holes and ziptying it there so it never goes flying or starts dangling around, more or less? Then run a 1/8 BSP Female to [hose adapter of choice?/AN?] and then the opposing fitting at the bush-into-oil-block end? being the hose-into-realistically likely a 1/8 BSPT male) Is this going to provide any real benefit over using a stainless/steel 1/4 to 1/8 BSPT reducing bush? I am making the assumption the OEM sender is BSPT not BSPP/BSP
    • I fashioned a ramp out of a couple of pieces of 140x35 lumber, to get the bumper up slightly, and then one of these is what I use
    • I wouldn't worry about dissimilar metal corrosion, should you just buy/make a steel replacement. There will be thread tape and sealant compound between the metals. The few little spots where they touch each other will be deep inside the joint, unable to get wet. And the alloy block is much much larger than a small steel fitting, so there is plenty of "sacrificial" capacity there. Any bush you put in there will be dissimilar anyway. Either steel or brass. Maybe stainless. All of them are different to the other parts in the chain. But what I said above still applies.
