A true 'street car' is one that is fully complianced and pit passed with all the features it has, a certification for each mod from the dept of transport, an engineer and is insured as per the full disclosure of all this info.

My Family Volvo wagon is a true street car (not a very fast one though), with all its mods. Each one has been engineered and passed by the pits. And my lovely insurer shanons knows about each one of the mods.

There are a few 9 second cars that qualify as per the above statement, sadly none of them are skylines. So lets step up to it boys and girls.

Thats alright adrian in the past when I've had a car that couldn't meet those standards I just said to people it wasn't a true street car and whooped their ass anyway.

How about----- who cares if your car isn't a 'true' street car.

It still goes really fast and if that is the only come back someone has when you beat them try; " yeah it's not a true street car, it's a true fast car unlike your slow peice of crap...." (best use don people who try to bring you down for using NOS --- they love it).

Ahhh bugger it, I give up. Better chalk me up in the "cheatin' full drag trim" list then :D

If I use Nitrous on the drag strip but I'm only breathing it in via a bottle strapped to my back and a diving respirator, would that also add to my list of cheater mod's?

Rev210 and Steve_SST, how do you guys get aftermarket ECUs approved over there.

Sarich orbital was doing IM240 tests (the minimum required in WA last I was there) but they stopped doing them about 12 months ago. Now the closest test place is Adelaide, and thats only with a full ADR 3701 test, and costs 3,500 a pop, pass or fail.

Have they changed the rules over there? I was hoping to pop over that way in the next few months, and would love to get my mods eng certified while I am over:)

Can't say I've had much to do with non-factory ecu's getting passed. The volvo is an emissions complient carby (for the 1970's baby yeah!) plus lpg. The engine conversion, custom gas fit and everything else in certified and passed. Had a few late model engine conversions to older cars but, the old pre 80's cars are/were easier.

To be a 'true' street car, you must answer 'true' to the question of whether your car is completely legal to drive on the road with the modifications it has because they have been authorised. This definition stops silly arguments, unless its an excuse to drink beer.

If you use the nitrous on the drag strip with the mask it's only cheating when you have cement in the boot, lead doors and a lead bonnet.

2rismo, in NSW you can get a heavily modded car engineered for around $600, in SA it will cost over 2,000 without the emissions test - you blokes have it too good:D

move to QLD.. i've been told(quoted) its going to cost me ~$150-170 to get my car mod plated with changing ecu, gearbox, turbo, engine, brakes... and i feel jipped cuz my mate paid $120 for his datto! :P

I'll be pleased enough to see you run a 12 Paul :) I know how long it has eluded you mate. Oh well at least you car has done a time 0.3 seconds quicker than my old stocker, I never thought I'd see the day :P Wait a minute I'll call the guy who has my car now and get him down the drags for a 12' before the season ends so I have another 6-7 months to hang it on you before you get a chance to go again :P

I have a HUGE problem with the phrases, "True street car", "Street trim" and "Street Legal".

Sorry for CAPS but:

I DON'T RACE ON THE STREET - I DRIVE MY STREET CAR ON THE STREET - I RACE MY DRAG CAR AT THE DRAGS!!!

The fact that they are the same vehicle is the whole point.

I'd love to know if any of the people that crap on and on and on about "street trim" have ever asked any of the V8 commodore/falcon/cortina/torana drivers at street meets if they feel bad cos they're not running in "full street trim".

Do you realise that jap car owners are among the ONLY people in the country that give a shit whether times are run with the seats still bolted in and radial's fitted to the back? Do you realise that everyone else thinks it's a waste of time NOT running slicks?

In the interests of comparison, I see value in running a set of nittos/bf's/hoosier radials before going all out on slicks but that doesn't change the fact that "street trim" is as ridiculous as the statement, "but it runs exactly the same on the street".

You may well think its a waste but I personally like fact I can drive down to the Motorplex, get scrutineered run a reasonable time then drive home(provided my car doesnt break..).

I do have the odd street race. I'd only be lieing to myself if I said I didn't, and if its a daily driven car i'd rather be able to claim its times as is rather than "Drag spec" setup. I also happen to know alot of the v8 brigade who pride themselves on doing it in a car setup same as their street 1. Sure they conveniently happen to drive with full cages 10" wide rims etc but they drive there and run as is. Especially amongst the current gen3 and late model brigade. They may run with slicks but alot(well here in WA.. Home of power over posing), will attempt to do it with street tyres(be it BFG's or cheapie retreads).

Well, immediately it becomes a problem when you start talking 'street legal' and comparing different states.

In SA, we cannot even fit a BOV, forget turbos (must be stock), turbo timer (even if it is linked to cut out on the hand brake), boost controller (or a bleed), ecus (or interceptors), cams, cam gears, plenum or injectors, external wastegates - they are completely out. Hell even the ride height has to be stock unless engineered - so I suppose if you wanted to go down the 'street legal' path, I think we would all loose to guys that live in queensland or own a pre 1972 car (you can do anything to them here without a problem, twin turbos, supercharge whatever).

In Qld, you can fit any size turbo to a car that came out with a turbo, Power fc is legal without even having a permit, EBCs are also legal. I know because I rang them to see about getting my car engineered and the guy kept saying there was nothing to engineer, or issue a mod plate for - he was an 'approved person' under their mod scheme and recommended to me by Qld tpt dept.

In Vic, you can only fit a POD or a FMIC, its different everywhere.

Bottom line, no matter what the federal laws say, each state interprets them differently - so its not really comparing Apples and Apples when you say 'street legal' now is it?

haha yeah... I am going to get everything i can mod plated so i have less hassles! I suppose they are very lax about mods up here, i heard last nite from a well known car modder that he doesnt even count an ecu as being a mod. Just looks at it, as long as the car runs, its fine.

Tho we have a rule against modifying the cars power output from within the car (so dual boost controllers with 'missile switch' boost adjustment is illegal)... I will need to look into this because as far as i know you can do the same with an AVC-R, yet still be legal :S double standard laws and picky cops

You would rather RE55s over Nankangs? So would i but there isnt anywhere i can buy RE55/A032/A048/DO1J/DZ02Js from for anything near that price, not in the diameters and sizes i run anyway. :(

Thats why i have a 2nd set of rims with good rubber on them (DO1Js) and another set with the cheapest rubber i can find, as i dont even hit boost half the time when i drive my car on the street. :Oops: so not too concerned about grip, just wear with the susp geometry my car runs.

But im sure the drag times are just like circuit times, if you are running R compund rubber, then you are seen as buying a lap time with good/expensive rubber....

Not that i agree with that attitude...but it seems to be the trend, you did what lap time???... oh he runs R-compound semi slicks.... you did what 1/4 time????...oh he runs Nittos....

same here I run the Nittos on my normal wheels and the wheels I run at the drags, funny thing was for a long time my fastest time of 11.8 was on the normal everyday rims not the rims I would normaly use at the drags hahaha then I cracked myself a 1.97 60ft with the drag rims and done a 11.7, I can't wait to get racing again its driving me batty

    • Version 1 aluminium airbox is.......not acceptable No pics as I "didn't like the look.....alot" Even after all my "CAD", and measurements, the leg near the fusebox just didn't sit right as it ended up about 10mm long and made the angle of the dangle look wrong, the height was a little short as well, meh, I wasn't that confident that Version 1 was going to be an instant winner I might give Version 2 another go, there's plenty of aluminium at work, but, after having in on and off a few times, and laying in the old OEM airbox without the new pod filter and MAF, there may be an option to modify the OEM air box and still use the Autoexe front cover and filter.... maybe This >  Needs to fit in here, but using the panel, and not the pod, the MAF will need to fit in the airbox though> I'm thinking as the old OEM box and Autoexe cover that is sitting in the shed is just sitting around doing nothing, and they are relatively abundant and cheap to replace if I mess it up and need another, it may well fit with some modifications to how the Autoexe brackets mounts to the rad support, and some dremiling to move it get in there, should give me some more room for activities, as I don't want to move the MAF and affect the tune Sealing the hole it requires to stick it in the air box is simple, a tight fit and some pinch weld will seal it up tight  I am calling this a later problem though
    • and it ends up being already priced in as though you're just on 91RON without any ethanol. Car will lose a bit of economy as the short and long term fuel trims bring down the AFR back to stoich or whatever it is for cruise/idle for the engine.  
    • Oh, you are right. But, in Australia E10 is based on 91RON fuel and ends up being 94RON. Hence it being the cheaper option for economy cars. The more performance oriented cars go for the 98RON fuel that has no ethanol mixed in. The only step up we have left then at some petrol stations is E85.
    • There is a warning that "this thread is super old" but they ignore that anyway...
    • With 10% Ethanol, we're talking 2-3% fuel consumption difference. The emissions reductions and octane boost in my opinion far outweigh this almost non existent loss.    My tanks sitting at 80%. Luckily that should go down fast as I'm on vacation again for the next two weeks.
