goin down to a test n tune at willow bank saturday night an was thinkin of getting a set of 275/40r17 Kuhmo KU36's. But a friend pointed out that when they're cold, i'll probably get worse traction then normal street tyres. would this be right? any advice thoughts would be greatly appreciated thanks.

KU36s are normal street tyres. They are just a higher performance one.

Too many people get confused these days and think they are a semi comp, which they simply are not.

So you think they should be fine for traction when they're cold? wishing i had an on/off button for the 4wd so i could warm the rears at the drags...

You have 4WD, you don't need a switch - you need to read the GTR launch threads in this section.

On a decent road tyre you should be able to get ~1.9 60ft in a R33 with 300-380rwkw with some practice. Which is pretty decent.

1.9?? im hopeing to run in the 1.5's, have got 1, 1.59 60ft an some low 1.6's with a set of falken 452's was hoping to run more consistent with a lil more aggressive tyre, i now have bout 340kw atw previous times were when i had about 280kw atw

1.5 will be very impressive if you can manage it.

On an airport surface with Hoosier Drag Radials i was managing 1.5 60ft (8000rpm launches), but then they were on 28psi or so and not under 20psi like they should've.

I forget what i ran with street tyres now. It might actually have been 1.7 - honestly can't remember. Either way a 1.59 is VERY good for street rubber but is indicative of lower power. You might find the rears will turn a bit harder with the extra 60rwkw :)

yer there is a lot of difference between a proper dragstrip an a runway/normal bitumen. 1.5 i would think very good for a run way. well i guess i'll have to flip a coin wether to go for the ku36's of a set of falken 453's n see wot i can do, do you know how much much its safe to drop pressures never experimented with it, but i would think it would help.

I've run 20psi before, didn't give much different in a GTR though from memory. So you can drop them a bit and experiement

Made a difference when i was racing my GTS-R regularly though (between .1-.2 consistently)

How about trying some federal 595 RSR's? same dealio as ku36 but i have found them to be substantially cheaper.

Also ive pulled off consecutive 1.6 60ft with achilles street tyres. 1.67 is my fastest if i recall correctly

  • 2 weeks later...
 went with the ku36's went to willowbank test an tune last saturday nite. could see it was goin to rain shortly an i would be lucky to get 2 runs so had a stupid idea i'll drive through the water an drop a 4wd burnout to warm the tyres 8000rpm clutch drop with wet tyres, that part seemed to go well but then when i dropped the clutch again to launch a few seconds later the clutch didnt like it, an continued to slip down the strip a lil. never had a prob with it slippin before then when i lined up again thought the clutch mite cool off in that time drove round the water did a clutch drop by the time i got half way down the strip clutch was slippin like a bitch. then would slip goin down the high way on the way home once i got to round 5500rpm, then on sunday didnt slip at all , by sunday nite was handling clutch drops on normal bitumen no problem, so now not sure whether to give the clutch another go at the drags or not...

i went few weeks ago to drags with my new ku36 265/r18 tyres

first few runs with 40psi in the tyres got 1.7x 60ft times, dropped them down to 28psi and was in the 1.6x 60ft times

only 340rwkw

good clutch will be needed to take the abuse :)

    • GCG is a good company, they're a major distributor for Garrett in Japan as well.
    • Nah, OEM washer bottle and brake fluid reservoirs are fine I don't know what it is with the plastic that Mazda used, some plastics, like the washer bottle and brake fluid res are fine, and still look new after 20 years use, where as the coolant expansion tank, and PS reservoir, that I replaced with new OEM items when I first got the car, turned yellow and started getting brittle a few years later If the dirty yellow stained plastics didn't trigger me there wouldn't be an issue, but they did, much like the battery bracket....... Meh As for going back to work full time to support car stuff, nope, why, because I own a Mazda NC MX5, not a Nissan R series Skyline 🤣
    • I've never heard of CJ-motor, so can't advise you on them. I'd just go straight to GCG for a GCG highflow though. Seems no point to use a middleman. I'm somewhat surprised that the price on the CJ site is lower than the GCG retail price. Even though CJ would get a discount of some sort, you would hardly expect them to give up so much margin. Maybe the price is out of date? Having said that "I'd go to GCG"...when I did my highflow, I went to Hypergear. I did this https://hypergearturbos.com/product/rb25dethighflow/#tab-dyno-results with the R34 OP6 450HP profile. With the BB centre (extra $400) and intially with the standard boost actuator, but I eventually got him to send me the high pressure one when I got to the point of being able to actually use it. Ends up costing the same sort of money as the GCG highflow, but this is, of course, the turbo that I KNOW has a shorter length core and so moves the comp cover rearwards. The GCG apparently doesn't do that. My mechanic also swears by the GCG highflow, given that we have another turbo rebuilder who does something essentialy the same as theirs, using Garrett wheels. He says it stands up at really low revs and makes good power. I haven't pushed my HG highflow past ~240-250rwkW yet (should have a little more in it, but unclear how much) and it does have a fairly gentle boost ramp. OK, it's much better now that I have gotten my boost controller tuned up on it.  A lot of my earlier unhappiness was because I couldn't keep the wastegate flap as closed as it needed to be (including some mechanical issues). I'd still prefer it to boost up nearly as quickly as the stocker, and it certainly a bit slower than that. So maybe the GCG one is worth the first look (for you).
    • Ok thanks 🙂 I will higly consider this. Any "known" company for a good reviews and experience to send that off? Is that CJ-motor good one? Or go straight to GCG site? I need to use VPN to even find some of those "shops" let alone access them 🙂
    • You can literally put in as much WMI as it takes to quench the combustion totally (and then back it off a little, obviously), and it will keep making more and more power. The power comes from the cooling effect of the water (and the meth) and the extra fuel (the meth, which also has massive octane). It is effectively exactly like running E85. One might be slightly better than the other, but they are damn close. But with either you can lean on the boost or the timing (or both) waaaay more than with just petrol and the results are similar. Here's the first thing I googled for an anecdotal bit of evidence. Can't access the attachment without being a gold member, but it is there for the getting if able to, or searched up elsewise perhaps. https://www.hpacademy.com/forum/general-tuning-discussion/show/wmi-vs-e85/
