My R33 GTR's stock exhaust cam shaft is giving me 10 degree varients in ignition timing.

Mr nissan wants almost $700 odd for a exhaust cam shaft, Tomei Poncam's can be had for a little more and then at least i know both are new.

I have heard different things re power shifting to more of a top end car, It will be daily/street driven car.

Tomei make two different sets of cam's, Type A and B. I assume type A are similar to stock?

Is it worth sticking OEM or going after market?

Also while im posting, I need some front pipes. Any recommendation's on which ones and where to get them ?

I got my Tomei Type B's for $638 delivered so I'd go that way for sure.

I'm told the Poncams will make improvements low to mid rather than top end which is what I preferred.

Personally I think you're mad if you don't upgrade if it's similar in price.

Unless fuel consumption is of concern...

If you go tomei you will benefit most with a re tune..

Really depends on your current set up.. If its only mild I'd stick with the stockers

I'm sure some one has a spare cam laying around they could sell u

How is it giving you 10 degree variants? Is the drive spline for the Cas worn?

Sounds like the Cas is at fault?

The cas is throwing the ignition timing around due to it moving, but i believe the splines on the cas itself are fine.

The cam shaft drive is worn.

Also mods to the car;

Garrett -7's

Apexi PowerFC

Tomei Adjustable cam gears

Reco Head

Ganador catback exhaust

hiflow cat

pods

everything else is stock

After doing the head gasket and putting it all backtogether, it is at the tuners and the above was the diagnosis. Car was pulling 250-280rwkw on 15psi boost I was told, but not stable due to the cas messing with the ignition timing.

Just don't want it to be super revvy when its my daily/street car.

What timing belt?

Gates belts are known to get certain harmonics and can affect timing to a degree, but not 10degrees!!

Guess in you case the drive is worn then...

Nissan timing belt.

Yep drive is defs warn, I trust my tuner ;)

Just trying to decide if its worth going pon cam's or trying to find a used camshaft, that and some front pipes..

I would remove Cas and bracket, fit Cas and see how much movement is in the shaft.

10 degrees is more than 1 tooth of the timing belt

Don't have the car at the moment so can't do any check's. Tuner is reputable and knows his stuff, and did warn me when i got the reco head back but was a "wait and see" sorta thing.

Pretty much need to know will going poncam's give me more bottom end or top?

    • Yeah they mention as a R34 for 2.5 Turbo...but then again thos "small" were also for R34 by that different site. But i look into it and that 310mm EBC is for R34 GTT. And by those you linked the specs are the same 🙂    EDIT: I found these on one site here: DBA 4000 series T3 DBA42304S They are 310mm...and it says are for R34GTT...are there good? EDIT2: ok they have pads too.  What "color" should i get for street use? I dont want/need some noisy ones...(and if they are not that dusty that is good too)
    • Yeah, shame. Maybe  driver's carpet is available 🙏. I am waiting for both amayama and nangun to confirm.
    • Probably. I take it that they are also mentioned to be for R34 Skyline? For example.... RDA has that part as RDA7957. I have the dimpled and slotted version of that on my car https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/285518478694?srsltid=AfmBOopKxMuAFpsxZJdB1cam4D5RAj1f9yJyOttPZLAwXVNCOiwlhrIy This is DBA's top one piece equivalent https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/364246686631?srsltid=AfmBOorbb0XHQgqTvZLgQPhg70nqJtGvdojKnugum3O2LFSr2h-obp8D
