I went to pedders dandenong to replace brake pads and one of the employees or the owner himself crashed my car into a metal bench after they finished the job.

They tried to tape it up so I can drive it. Crazy, I ended up with no car maybe for months now and need public transport.

I wouldn't go there anymore for sure, the owner Colin even tried to persuade me to drive the car home with damaged hood grille bumper and side panel. I refused. Colin even told me this accident in his workshop is a regular thing happens every 3 or 4 months. Which is a lie.

I am thinking whether I need to get a solicitor or not. As Colin is getting a friend to panel beat the car and I don't trust the friend.

My car resale value is going to be low. I hope you all avoid pedders dandenong. My christmas and new year plans are ruined now.

Do you have insurance? If so, get it processed through them so you get the repairs done properly.

How bad is the damage? If it is only minor panel damage then it should be fine to drive as is. they would've had to have hit the bench pretty hard to do any serious damage. I hate to say it, but it kind of sounds like you are over reacting a bit. They would've had to have hit the bench at high speed to make it so you are without a car for a few months

And find out who the friend is. If they work for a panel shop then the work should be done to a reasonable standard.

I doubt your resale will be affected very much unless your car is absolutely perfect and the damage is major. There are plenty of cars getting around that have been crashed that you would never know they had.

Soo you can't drive it because they have damaged suspension?

What's the issue?

Drive it to your panel beater get a quote send the workshop that damaged your car a copy with a letter of demand or better yet if you're insured lodge a claim.

Once it's fixed it will make no difference to your resale value if they do a good job.

Give them the option - either say that you'll go and get three quotes, and they can chose the cheapest - and keep it out of insurance.

OR

If you have full insurance, contact them and explain what has happened - if the owner has admitted he is at fault then it's a simple matter of getting your car repaired through the normal channels and your insurance company will waive your excess and pursue Pedders (their insurance company) for the damages.

Whatever you do, don't get it done through 'his mates' - you will guaranteed get the cheapest patch up job going, and if it's not done through insurance you won't get a warranty on the repairs.

I like the first option - It's a win/win. You can chose a reputable panel shop, and Pedders don't take a hit on their insurance premium. But if they want to play hard ball, then just get your insurance company involved and they can take care of the headaches - after all, that's what you pay them for remember?

P.S. Most unusual first post ever.

I can see why he doesn't want to drive it. the moment he takes it out of the shop they will turn around and say it was fine when he left.

I would get in writing from the owner that the damage was done by them. once got, take it away, go to a panel beater you want and get a quote. Send him the quote.

Alternatively, as has been said, simply contact your insurance company and give it to them to handle assuming you have one, of course.

  • 1 year later...

After I heard the big crash at the waiting room the whole family took nearly an hour to tell me.

they obviously tried to patch up the car so it looked less damaged and the owner just calmly acted as if it is not a major thing he said he damaged customers car once a month lol.

But it took nearly 4 months before I got back the car and many phone calls

and I still had to pay for the brake pads when I picked up the car.

If I took the car home as suggested by the owner, I am sure he would deny everything or claimed for less damage.

The new pedders brake pads are squeally as well.

And the panel install is not as spot on as the factory install,

and the foam behind the front bumper is missing

It must had been thrown out when it broke apart after the crash.

Just beware if you go to fix your car this thing can happen to anyone and they don't care about you as customers.

Even pedders head office only told me it can't do anything because all it does just to provide a licence but everything else is in the hands of the licencees to come good.

I wouldn't go back that is for sure.

I feel that you simply handled this very poorly. If you have insurance, you should have just got them onto it.

If not, I would have taken photos of it, got them to sign a bit of paper stating they were responsible for the damage, then taken it to a panel beater of your choice, got a quote and handed it to Pedders to resolve. There's no way you should have let them take care of it.

But you live and you learn.

Actually, I imagine by now you have some form of paper work where they have basically admitted liability due to the fact they have at least attempted to fix it. I'd go back to them, tell them the job they did was rubbish and you will be going to your panel beater and getting a quote to fix it properly. They will then be presented with the quote and expected to pay it, lest they end up in court.

It's taken a year and a half to come back to SAU, when in fact you received perfectly good advice in the first place.

To recap...

1) get proof and/or acknowledgement that damage was done onsite by a staff member

2) Get your own insurance company to fix your car whilst the company sees the workshop at fault

3) your insurance company will claim from the workshop's insurance company or from the workshop itself if their insurance has lapsed

NB #3) is what Pedders D'nong was most afraid of!

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
