hey guys,

i have a bit of a problem, my gear shifting is getting really notchy, and makes it weird to put into gear sometimes. its not to the point were it grinds , its sometimes just hard to get into gear, but if u dont push the clutch all the way in to the floor then it rumbles through gear changes a bit. i went to one place that said that my syncros are screwd and that i would be looking at like $1500 to fixit at least, it doesnt fall out of gear or grinds that bad so i dont think this is the prob.

its not consitant either, sometimes u can drive it fine and other times it will stuff up.

the reason that i am posting this in here is to find out if any of you know of a good place i can go to on the gold coast that is reasonabley priced and knowledgable, so i can get this prob checked out and fixed?

I recommend changing your gearbox oil with some Redline Gearbox Oil.

You may find that this will fix the problem for you..... out of interest when was the last time the oil was changed?

If you don't know then it is time for you to change it.

After having a clutch replaced no too long ago, I asked my mechanic about a similar (slight) crunch going into 5th. My concern was gearbox but he mentioned that the parts quite often become glazed after prolonged use and recommended running a deglazing compound with the oil for approx 1 week, then change back to your regular oil. Apparently this usually does the trick.

cool, sounds good man, actually your prob sounds similar to mine but i dont think my oil change helped much, and a few months back a mechanic drove my car and said that the clutch is good but just needs adjusting,so we will see what happens, i hope its nething but the need for a new box or reconditioning.

I had a similar problem, could not get from 2nd to 3rd without crunch. But not always. Felt notchy etc. Was told the syncro story as well. Turned out to be clutch adjustment and bleeding not done properly. Apparently there is this extra drain line in the clutch bleed system and some air can get into it. Weird Nissan thing. Guys at ABS Sumner Park fixed it.

Just another look at the situation, I've got a short shift thing in my car and "apparently" (don't take it as gospel), the synchros dont keep up when changing gears making them crunch. I know andrew changes gears faster than me and he crunches them. It's normally 5th that crunches. We find that if you leave it like 1-2 seconds before putting it into gear it doesn't crunch.

Just another idea.

My gearbox was starting to crunch heaps before I got the clutch replaced. Once I got the clutch replaced it stopped.

    • haha don't worry I'm sue you've got more fun ahead buying a 30 year old turbo car....but at least you are in the right place to ask
    • some days eh? The keyless entry and interior light on/off with the key will be controlled by the Body Control Module, but I'm not certain where that is or what it looks like (you might get lucky with a search to get a part#, which could be printed on it). I'd start at the A pillar/ Under dash/kick panel on the driver's side
    • It might be hit and miss, but Nissan Genuine Parts and Pitworks are not the same thing, although both are available from Nissan Dealers with Nissan Part Numbers. Nissan Genuine Parts are the OEM stuff, Pitworks are their attempt to get people back from generic parts makers
    • I did end up getting it sorted, as GTSBoy said, there was a corroded connection and wire that needed to be replaced. I ended up taking out the light assembly, giving everything a good clean and re-soldered the old joints, and it came out good.
    • Wow, thanks for your help guys 🙏. I really appreciate it. Thanks @Rezz, if i fail finding any new or used, full or partial set of original Stage carpets i will come back to you for sure 😉 Explenation is right there, i just missed it 🤦‍♂️. Thanks for pointing out. @soviet_merlin in the meantime, I received a reply from nengun, and i quote: "Thanks for your message and interest in Nengun. KG4900 is for the full set of floor mats, while KG4911 is only the Driver's Floor Mat. FR, RH means Front Right Hand Side. All the Full Set options are now discontinued. However, the Driver's Floor Mat options are still available according to the latest information available to us. We do not know what the differences would be, but if you only want the one mat, we can certainly see what we can find out for you". Interesting. It seems they still have some "new old stock" that Duncan mentioned 🤔. I wonder if they can provide any photos......And i also just realized that amayama have G4900 sets. I'm tempted too.
