Ok so I'm kinda fond of the Idlers style big lettering on the side of the tyres. What's the best way to achieve this?

I'm assuming a lot of these are stencil + rattle can jobs but surely there are other ways? Is there anyone in Oz doing something similar to http://www.tirestickers.com/ ?

Here's what I'm after (via Speedhunters):

Interesting idea. I'd want to know how well paint can paint lasts with the heat/cold/twisting a tyre has?

Hopefully it'd be better then those white walls people get painted on as they don't last

Well that's the problem, from what I've read basic brush + normal paint job just won't last. Some people have to repaint theirs every couple of months.

The stencil + spray idea seems easiest as it's very quick to redo. However, I can imagine it starting to look a bit messy around the edges after a few times.

Has anyone got first hand experience with stickers/decals? How well do they last?

In 1970, I used to pinch my younger sister's oil based crayons (white or yellow) and it was like 'colouring-in' hehe...

I forget, but it might have lasted a couple of months I think > Kleber tyres never looked so cool lol.

Ok so I finally got around to trying this the other night, with some Goodyear Eagle stencils from Canada: http://www.racelinedigital.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=2048

The bad news is, acrylic paint definitely does not work, it's already flaking off after a couple of days...

The other bad news is, I found out that my tyres are shagged when putting them back on the car after doing this :(

The good news, I really like the look:

Any ideas on how to do this properly and which paint to use?

(I'd also love to 3D print some sidewall shaped stencils to avoid buying more sticker ones each time this needs to be redone...)

I have spent quite a lot of time trying various paint and pens and my conclusion is that it is possibly highly dependant on the tyre wall stiffness.

I use a regular pen type on a set of Falken RT615 and it lasted for 1000's of Km.

Now with a set of Bridgestone RE002 and even two different tyre wall specific paint cracked and peeled within a few 100 Km.

I just use some stuff I got from ebay for like $6 it looks like a paint touch up brush/pot that you get from supercheap or so but it ends up drying kind of rubbery, last for agesss unless you get up and close to it with a high pressure gernie lol... just like any type of paint job make sure the tyre is clean before you do so eg. tyre shine and that sorta crap, I just wipe over the lettering with some wax and grease remover quick sand with some 320 then apply.

Thanks guys. I'd really prefer spray paint if possible - the stencils never stick on 100% so a brush/pen is likely bleed under the edges (the spray does a bit, too).

But then again that's if you just want to do the raised lettering that's already on the tyres.

Yeah nah, the lettering on the tyres is tiny. I want to go big :)

Mad Mike recommends 'fast dry enamel or primer' in the Tire Bomb post on Speedhunters, might give those a go.

I'm considering getting a custom made laser cut stencil made out of plywood or perspex, would allow me to respray easily when needed...

    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
    • Agreed, and in particular the earth strap that should go from the subframe to the chassis but it often broken or left off. There is a section in the R32 workshop manual you can follow for troubleshooting if you don't see anything suspicious, and depending where you are (there is no location on your user profile) you should be able to get your hands on a second hand replacement unit still if needed
    • Yeah they mention as a R34 for 2.5 Turbo...but then again thos "small" were also for R34 by that different site. But i look into it and that 310mm EBC is for R34 GTT. And by those you linked the specs are the same 🙂    EDIT: I found these on one site here: DBA 4000 series T3 DBA42304S They are 310mm...and it says are for R34GTT...are there good? EDIT2: ok they have pads too.  What "color" should i get for street use? I dont want/need some noisy ones...(and if they are not that dusty that is good too)
    • Yeah, shame. Maybe  driver's carpet is available 🙏. I am waiting for both amayama and nangun to confirm.
