So i've been reading around and watched some youtube videos of people driving with their revs up as high as 7 or 8000RPM.

I don't take my car on track or anything, but when i'm boosting on the roads and i reach up to 3100 RPM(ish), it sounds like my car is going to blow or something if i don't shift. Just wondering... why? How come i can't even reach 4000RPM without sounding like something under the hood is going to pop?? lol

Or am i being a pussy and just shifting too early?

would like to add my 2c to this, I have a 99 GTT as well.

i recently was discussing this with my mate. and i was saying the EXACT same thing as you suwidji. It feels like I can only go to around 20km/h before i reach around 3k RPM and then any higher my engine will be very loud revving like a whiny bi(atch - is this normal? furthermore my second gear will only take me to about 40km/h before the revs start climbing above 3k RPM again and revving similar. and so on, until i'm in 5th gear at ~90km

yeh sounds familiar lol, normally i shift around 2.5-3000 RPM which usally looks like this:

1st: 0-20km/h

2nd: 20-40km/h

3rd: 40-60km/h

4th: 60-80km/h

5th: 80+km/h

It doesn't SCREAM at this point, like it's normal and safe (sounding), but when im boosting from 2nd, my revs don't exactly reach over 3.5-4k very easily but the revs sound high.

No its not normal and i wouldnt keep driving like that until you diagnose it properly.... The descriptions arent the best so it could be lack of spark/fuel, turbo issues or blown cooler hose or many other things... Video will help i guess!

I've been driving this way for almost a year now (in terms of shifting at around 2500-3000RPM and those speeds) and i always thought it was normal. lol but now that you say it isnt, im worried. Will definately get a video up this arvo. Not sure how the sound quality will be (i've tried recording a drive once and you cant really hear anything), but hopefully will help :\

Get the video up and see how it goes.... I'd have a look but i dont think i am down that way for a while yet.... Unless you want to tag along with some Sydney boys on the 17th and come to one of our Newy cruises and we can have a look at it for ya?

haha yes. please. video so i know if it's the same as mine. strange since i have a black GTT too

but my mate says it's just that i'm not used to the engine...

they made black GTT's bodge! loljks, yeh im not sure, i was thinking the same thing,... i might not be used to the engine... but idk.

& yeh thanks mat and andrew. I'lm thinking of joining the cruise, but as i posted in that thread, i'm coming back from the states ON the 17th, so it depends how jetlagged i feel lol.

Well if you come up there are plenty of us willing to have a look and help mate! Its what SAU is all about :D

110% chance i'll be beerlagged on the day so you won't be the only one feeling awful.

Mother of God!!!

Oh and as i just said to Darksky, if its just sound then check the turbo gasket etc to make sure its not something simple :)

GTSBoy, any chance you can elaborate? Still learning my way around the internals

The clutch fan should create a loud howl noise as the fan will be locked up...... You mentioned a whiny sounds so you need to be more specific for E-diagnosis to work lol

Cool thanks will try that WITH MY CAR OFF tonight maybe!

edit: no howling, just a revving noise which is high.

as a comparison, being in my friend's 33, at the same 1st gear, 2-3k RPM his engine will be much quieter without the loud revving that will be heard if i was in 1st and at say 3k RPM.

which is why I am thinking that is weird. But I will either try and get a video/sound recording. Would be over the weekend though.

With your car off try and turn the radiator fan with your hand.

If it doesn't turn it's seized. If it turns super freely it's also broken.

I can't stress enough that I did write "WITH YOUR CAR OFF"

awww but it would be so much more fun with it on! :P

But seriously, how should it be turning? Should it be turning with a little resistance?

    • Was going to say the car pulls up nicely everywhere, especially going into that last long right hander before the main straight. Looks like a lot of fun.
    • Hey Dave, welcome aboard! Good to see another soon-to-be Stagea owner here. The wagons are awesome — plenty of space, still got that Skyline DNA, and loads of potential if you’re into mods. Definitely post up pics when you get it, everyone here loves seeing new builds. What model/year are you looking at?
    • See if you can thermal epoxy a heatsink or two onto it?
    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
