Who doesnt want advice these days :)

Been out of the game for nearly 4 years now and have NFI what to do with the turbo on the RB26.

We are currently running a T78 drag kit ie the bigger T88 exhaust manifold and gate, and want some more power.

Its been on the dyno at Unigroup a couple of times over the last 4 years and we are kinda wondering why it wont make more power.

Engine runs on Caltex E85, which is currently E70, and has recently made 400rwkw on a conservative tune and about 18psi. Its got a set of 264/272 degree 9.15mm lift GReddy cams in it with a Tomei 1mm head gasket. Head has been ported quite thoroughly by Pete at Advan. Has seen near 2 bar of boost but Yavuz said it seems to hit a wall and wont make more power. Yavuz likes to keep us in the dark and lets the drag strip do the talking and with consistant runs over 135mph i can see why, car weighs about 1460kgs with me in it, we dont know what power it has made on near 2 bar boost unfortunately. We are beginning to think it may just be running out of puff as i guess the car would be making close to 650 odd hp at the crank. It comes on full boost by a little over 4000rpm but we want more with the same response if that can be had nowadays which i am sure it can. The less boost we need the better but i do understand that to make power you need boost ;)

Can it be had and what would you use? We would prefer to keep the manifold and gate, the rest would need modificationss no doubt. Are the cams too small?

Unfortuately curently only having internet access at work makes it hard for me to search and see things as work blocks certain free picture hosting sites :(

Any advice is appreciated

Brad

A couple of things spring to mind. The FP GT35 stuff might be of interest. And you might like to have a look at the Hypergear thread, especially the more recent pages where Stao has been fiddling about with a VNT system. There is a lot more response to be had in the power level where you are now, and both the above areas are worth a look. Even if Stao hasn't got something ready right now, he could probably work something up for you if you were willing to guinea pig it a little bit.

From what I can see from the recent FP thread, there are also some really big turbos in their lineup too, if you want a significant increase in power range.

This

why are you all suggesting a new turbo isn't a t78 good for 500killerwasps anyway?

That's kindof what I was thinking too - need more specific details if we're going to suggest anything, even if a suggestion is "keep the turbo and try and work out why the setup isn't performing as it should". >135mph is pretty broad (145mph is 135mph+), and 650hp @ crank on alcohol is not that flash for a T78.... also, full boost at just over 4000rpm is pretty surprising too. Are you still running 2.6litres? I'd say a PT6766 or HTA3794 won't spool that well, but then I wouldn't expect a T78 or T88 too either so makes me wonder if there is a chance detail is missing? And how much are you likely to spend?

At this stage going face value that you currently have a T78 and want more power and as good spool as possible I'd be leaning towards a PT6466 but depends on if more detail comes to light :)

Am guessing this is a T4 twin scroll, so PT6466 would be my choice.

But... Like the others im concerned that the T78 A: should make more and B: should be laggier.

maybe a cam timing or some sort of electrical ignition based issue.. maybe not triggering right and can't get enough timing into it.

What sort of detail do you need?

the head is pretty heavily ported and far from standard hence the reason it comes on early. Its not the first engine with a T78 Advan has built that works this well either.

Dollars wise this is where it gets tricky. Given we already have a pretty decent set up i would like to spend as little as posible. I really do not want to have to sell the turbo kit and start fresh so ideally would like to keep the manifold and gate. I know the dump will probably need to be modified and a new intake pipe and some cooler pipework fabbed up but thats ideally where i would like to stop.

I am probably asking for too much, but having been out of the game for 4 years i was simply wondering if there was anything out there that may fit my bill now.

The timing is definitely right. The new Ross Balacer trigger setup for RB26 was developed on our car and we have the prototype on it still. There is most definitely no timing issues.

Spark wise its all sorted. We did have issues but since going after market ignitor its made a world of difference.

Detail - I guess some confirmation it is DEFINITELY a T78 somehow, and that you have a T4 twin scroll flange like is being assumed, and really it's a shame there are no ACTUAL dyno numbers/curve and that it is definitely a 2.6 litre still.

If all that is true, I actually don't know how you are getting full boost at just over 4000rpm. I've met a T78-33D 2.6litre GTR before and it was laggy as hell - guessing yours may be a 29D?

If it is a 29D, you're trying to save money, and want make a bit more power and keep optimal spool then maybe one of these might be worth looking at: http://www.extremeturbosystems.com/Precision-PTE-6266-CEA-Billet-Turbocharger.html

The 6466 would be better, but they are a good amount more expensive.

Definitely a 33D, definitely a 2.6 and yes a twin scroll manifold. Its the stock T88 GReddy manifold. They called it the drag kit BITD as it was esentially an 88 kit with a 78 turbo.

I guess this thread has gone a bit off track as people are looking too heavily at the dyno number and not at the turbo being used. The T78 is an air pump thats rated to about 750hp but would like to know what is a step above that isnt a hop step and jump ahead.

Garrett only make a GTX35 and then a GTX4202 which is a huge jump. I could go a Garrett T51 SPL but as i cant find someone who has one fitted to a similar setup its hard to make a decision.

I havent looked at Precision turbo's so i may have a chat with GAS to see they reckon and what they can supply

I may consider a new pair of cams but time will tell. A bit more duration and lift may help but at what cost?

OK I will just assume it is a T78-33D air pump and trust you have the rest of the setup optimised then :)

Garrett make a GT4094R, GT4294R and GTX4294R which respond and flow between those two turbos - though I'd sooner see something like the Super94 HTA, which is currently $1899US which is VERY good value for the performance it offers. FP only have .85 T3 listed there, but if you got in touch with them there may be a chance they can sort out a T4 housing for you... I honestly don't know. Good thing about it is you are unlikely to ever need to upgrade beyond that, despite it not being GT42 sized! In essence it'd be like have a GT4202R that is more in the realms of the T78-33D in spool.

A Precision PT6466 BB is the other option - a step down in lag and spool from the HTA and the most conservative option - definitely has T4 twin scroll option.

Those two are basically the magic units for upgrading from the performance balance you are currently getting IMHO. If you went up to the lag level of the 6766 then you may as well go HTA (so long as you can get the T4).

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for all the advice guys

Looking like a 6466 is going to be the go as its got some rear housing options to enable us to muck around with things and it should keep us happy for a while ;) The GAS R34 has one on it and they claim they are seeing boost at 3000rpm and making around 550kw atw's which is definitely a step up from the T78 that we are looking for

Now to try and find some dyno graphs

    • Really? That's piss weak. I didn't know they hobbled the shitboxen that badly. OK. So probs need to buy a flywheel too. But that's not too bad.
    • Hi all. I already posted some newbie-ish questions here and there but this will be my first "big" post. Last summer I went and fulfilled a kind of childhood wish, because I just thought I needed this experience in my life no matter what. The car I bought is a mildly modded 1995 BCNR33 Vspec. It was repainted to a metallic orange color all around and it had all windows reseated. Not so well done black respray in the trunk and a metallic black in the engine bay. From outside it looks very nice except for a minor paint error on the roof and the rear spats needing new adhesive tape. The inside is pretty clean and no broken plastics, missing or faded buttons. Even the adjustable mirrors and trunk antenna work like a charm. Despite a moderately long list of issues I don't (yet) regret buying this car. Most mechanical problems are just due to age, like worn rubbers here and there. The underside sadly has lots of corrosion, especially to the back. It looks like it either has been driven in the winter for a while or it lived near the saltwater in Japan, the rust is nothing terrible but it'll require to be looked after. Mostly panel gaps and all the mounted components underneath are a bit crusty, but I don't think anywhere has progressed so badly that there's going to be holes. Front right jacking rail is crushed and needs some care so it doesn't develop into a rust crater at some point. Worst part is definitely the strut towers. I thought they looked fine but after taking off the strut bar I noticed that it actually started bulging up on the passenger side. Probably would have passed on the car or negotiated down by some thousand Euros more if I had noticed this before buying, but here we are. Trunk area also has signs that there was a water leak to the interior once but nothing too crazy, I guess lots of Skylines had this at some point. As for the list of (known) issues, I'll try to make this compact. I hope the coloring is self explanatory. Mechanical: -Various busted or soon-to-be busted rubber bushings and ball joints. Will replace ball joints with OEM or better and bushings with polyurethane where possible. -Shaking steering wheel at above 80kph -downshift from 5th to 4th is a bit crunchy unless I rev-match, might just try to renew the shifter assembly, but it's not a priority issue -tailshaft centre bearing could use a replacement, is it worth going 1-piece tailshaft as it doesn't look too fresh all around? Chassis: -underbody corrosion on many spots and in hollow spaces, needs to be treated -corrosion on many bolts, hoses, lines, suspension components, subframes, will be treated when replacing of the bushings is needed as time goes on -strut tower top panels and some of the surrounding panels are rusty, so needs fixing. Will look into doing this with a buddy in the winter, otherwise bite the bullet and pay a professional -driver side door is misaligned to the body and needs to go a slight bit more inwards -both door windows are misaligned and have an airgap where the window meets the door at the B pillar -The Aerocatch latches for the bonnet have locks but no keys, need new keys. -driver side door window is kind of gritty and could use a polish -damaged jacking rails and front frame rails, from people lifting the car the wrong way, might have this fixed by a bodyshop Electrical: -Nismo tachometer is just bouncing and displaying nonsense, supposedly worked fine when the stock ECU was still in the car -An old Greddy boost controller sits on the dash which will be removed as it servers no purpose anymore. -a led segment rpm gauge is on the steering column, will probably also be (re-)moved once the Nismo tacho is working correctly -there was an attempt to make the sound system better by the previous owner but it was just inducing noise all the time, ripped out the amp and filters in the back, no music for now -trunk antenna goes up as long as the radio is on regardless of the mode, I want it to only rise if I choose Radio specifically or per switch -3rd brake light is a bit dimmer than the taillights but everything was converted to LEDs so mabye now it just seems dimmer? -reverse light flickers, have to test if that behavior changes when I fiddle with the gear stick. Hope I can get around changing the switch. -Left side taillight, blinker section has minor water intake and is humid after washing. Other side has a hole in it, probably for that exact reason. I'll probably reseal them entirely and plug the holes. Engine: -minor coolant drips on one or the other hose -rear turbo leaks oil onto the exhaust making the car essentially undriveable due to fire hazard -Oil filter relocation kit has an oil drip at the Dash lines, will probably make a new connection there and tighten real good and pray -throttle body assembly is slightly stuck for the first throttle pedal input after sitting for a while I'm always open to suggestions and advice from more experienced people, I'm sure half of this list is easily dealt with and just requires some time and effort to sort out properly. Once I have some proper pictures of the car I will post some in this thread, I just have to remember to take some more once I get the chance to. Will post updates when I have news on anything, I want to try to keep this thread as kind of a logbook as well. Ultimately my goal for this car is to just enjoy it. An engine rebuild is probably going to happen sometime as well, because it is old after all. It will never be fully new again, I am just not that rich. But I want it to look good, work well and not rot away while I drive it. I'm probably gonna spend a lot of money on this journey, hopefully not an unreasonable amount.
    • Hi all. So one of my major issues at the moment is my rear turbo leaking oil on the exhaust (and the general area). I presumed it was the rock hard super old drain hose, which it was not. So now I am in the midst of removing the rear turbo to get access to the banjo bolt that goes into the turbo oil feed. As one of the previous owners accidentally? tore off the OEM oil feed hardline that reaches behind the turbo, they ran braided lines directly to the turbo, presumably PTFE. Now, regardless if the line has rubber or teflon inside, is it just generally a bad idea to do this? I imagine these lines get quite hot being between the engine, turbo core and exhaust manifold. I suppose it's not too far fetched to think the line may even have melted. I'd love to hear your opinions on this as as the replacement OEM hardline piece is 130 per unit. And cutting open the currently mounted line to see inside will mean I just have to get a replacement either way. So far I am hoping maybe the bolt just loosened or (god forbid) they forgot one of the crush washers.
    • If it's a factory 20de manual probably has the 6 bolt flywheel in which case the det clutches won't work as they're 9 bolt.
    • All RB push clutches are interchangeable. AFAIK, the 4cyl ones are not. Different flywheels. The RB small box is not identical to the 4cyl boxes. Just very similar.
