My almost std R35 is just 2 serious for public roads......with speed cameras setup even around most country towns and I'm not interested in track-days..........so I find myself driving my Holden V8 more and more and having fun without the fear of getting my car impounded .

Will the day come where there will be a fast car amnesty ?

PS: yes I still need that GTR fix now and then.......

I've been for a few rides in my mates R35, and while it is viciously fast, it is so refined and the power delivery so smooth, that I don't find it that exciting (in a straight line anyway). A 260rwkw gts-t however, is so raw, peaky and abrupt in the way that it makes power, that it feels faster, and gets the adrenaline pumping harder ;)

A manual V8 is indeed more fun vs an R35 on public streets IMO. You can use much more of what the car is about, row through the gears, the noise, smell and sound, it's just more fun- without going warp factor 5. The R35 is just too quick, by the time you're having fun, the speeds reached in the datto will see you thrown into the clink if caught. R35 is awesome in the sense it will drive you to the track in plush comfort, and Camry manners (albeit boring) but then smash out a lap time that will embarrass most trailered in & gutted out race cars. On another note, I am driving a Golf-R atm for DD duties,and FWIW I have never driven a more boring car!

Yeah a mate just sold his DD Golf-R for an FT86 for that exact reason.

He misses the little things (auto wipers etc) but says having a "fun" car to drive again makes up for it.

But yeah it's hard to see the point of having something like an R35 if you aren't going to ever use it occasionally at somewhere like a track. The thing with taking it to the track is you don't have to do a club CAMS track day. You can do days like the Formula Company drive days etc that have no timing, no fire extinguisher rules etc and are just days to have fun driving your car fast legally. But it's really the only place you can enjoy these things to the max IMO.

This is an interesting read. I personally haven't been in an r35 (would love to) but from all the countless videos I have seen of them you can see it's a much more "sanitised" experience of power and speed compared to many other cars on the road. Just mash the pedal and click the paddle a few times and you're flying, while it's still quiet and serene enough to have a conversation inside the cabin. If that's how that are in real life I can see how at times an r35 owner would crave something slightly more raw to get the heart racing.

Although in saying all that I did race an r35 at PowerPlay with just mild mods like titanium exhaust, tune etc and it squashed me while checking for dirt under it's fingernails. And I like to think I have a pretty fast car too. It's hard to wrap your head around the way they go watching them from the outside (brutal) vs what they seem to look & feel like from the inside (serene).

I dunno, when I launch mine off the lights its certainly not so "serene" inside the cabin as you say. The forces and vibrations on that initial start is quite overwhelming I almost soiled the drivers seat the first time I did it. That being said when I'm cruising around town, other than the siffer than average suspension you could almost be mistaken for driving a car with the same level of comfort as a BMW M series.

For me I totally love the look and feel of the GTR. Its like nothing I've ever owned (Subaru STi and Lotus Exige S included).. The fact that I can throw the kids in the back and groceries in the boot is the best part for me (as a family man) my 3 yr old lad particularily loves the performance and handling aspect :P

Haha certainly doing 0-100 in sub 3 seconds can't be considered serene. I'll bet that's awesome fun.

I mean more when you look at a video or someone lapping a track in the gtr, it certainly looks less "busy" than some other sports cars. I guess this is as much a testament to the engineers who designed it if it is actually like that to drive (have not been in a gtr) :)

I certainly wouldn't say no to owning one, but If that's true, I can see the argument that a buyer might look at a car that's more engaging to the senses even if it's a lot less capable.

If you want something fun on a track then get the new Lotus Exige S. 3.6ltrs supercharged and only 1100kgs. They look great, and go very well, plus a lot faster than the older models.

TBH I owned the 2011 Exige S 240 and traded that up for the GTR only because the misses demanded a back seat that I could carry the kids. I certainly don't regret the upgrade as the GTR looks less angry, but underneath is more angry, and provides the necessary comforts to be considered the Family Supercar.. Plus the old 240 only hit 100 in ~4-4.5sec (with launch control) so the GTR kills that easily while bringing a smile to my face :D

I have 3 cars vz clubby which is cammed and stalled, r33 gtr modified and my fun daily Alfa 33 ti. My view is the gtr should not even be placed in the same sentence as a falcommodore. And as for a 35 I could only imagine the pleasure in driving that. I often go on mountain drives and have taken all 3. HSV is by far the worse. Stupid and dangerous chasis, brakes are no better probably because of the chasis, boring to drive because it's just turn in wait for the oversteer and power out. These are just ego cars not driver's cars. Gtr I am not even going to do describe and can't even imaging how good the 35s are if you have the skill. The Alfa 33 is an amazing little car and I can throw that around the twisties like go cart. The Italians really designed this car for driving pleasure. Amazing 1.5L twin Carb motor screams and the chasis is so balanced and progressive. Fwd doesn't under steer like the Japanese cars and you can have a ball with just 95 kws.

So in conclusion. Alfa to put a smile on your face and stay legal while still teaching you how to handle a car (sorry it just keeps dragging me in), gtr for it awesomeness enough said, falcommodore for.....for..... nothing really unless you want a v8 to say you have owned one or skid and drifting but Gen and ls engines don't like hitting the limiter too often.

Let's face it, the R35 needs a weight shedding surgery. But I'll give credit where credit is due, it is a good car but it just seems dead inside the cabin.

A driver with an extensive skillset can pilot lighter RWD's such as S15's, RX7's etc to destroy the R35. And these lighter RWD's will be more fun and useable on the street.

And as can be seen in this video, the lighter FD looks a lot more fun to drive due to the inputs required and in-cabin noise etc.

I'm not a fan of LS motor's since I was raised on fords but they are a great engine. 80% of my mate's drive LS powered cars which spend a lot of their life on the limiter with no issues.

I'm not a fan of LS motor's since I was raised on fords but they are a great engine. 80% of my mate's drive LS powered cars which spend a lot of their life on the limiter with no issues.

They will be pulling the heads off soon if they keep it up. It's a known issue

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed 
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
    • You haven't driven many modern cars then have you? Most of them have sfa steering feel with their stupid electric bullshit steering systems.
