Hey guys

I have a r33 series 2 1996 model that relatively stock but am looking for a little more go. I don't wanna molest it cause I want it to be reliable.

It has a front mount inter cooler, 3" stainless blitz exhaust turbo back, apexi cold air intake, greddy profec b boost controller and a turbo smart plumb back bov (know it won't do much but thought I'd chuck it in).

I'm wondering what sort of power it could produce with these limited mods but also is the standard r33 tuneable at all? I realise it wont be much if it is tuneable at all but i dont have the coin to buy new computer turbo injextors etc etc. I have read on the Internet that it can make around 225kw.

Any feedback would be awesome cheers

well i just dropped off my car for a tune today so will give you before and after figures when i get it

earlier this year i ran it on the powercruise dyno and got 177.9 with JJR return flow fmic, jjr bellmouth front dump, venom 100 cpsi cat and hks super dragger catback, minus mid muffler. bosch 040, std ecu

i was really surprised with this number so im getting a before done by my tuner too to compare

the r33 ecu isnt tuneable. ive gotten an apexi power fc as my tuner knows them inside out, youll have to ask the tuner your considering for their preference.

im only running 9psi as thats what my stock boost solenoid. if youre lookiing for reliability i wouldnt go above 10 - 12psi... i think 200rwkw is more of a reasonable target,

im only really looking at anything around 180 - 200

for the mods we have its more about making the power throughout the rev range better rather than a high number

I'm just going of what I saw on the Internet but I didn't think 225kw with these minor mods sounded right. It's a slow project for me so I'm just building it up slowly. It only runs 9-10psi and I don't want to go much higher due to reliability. Is there much point going aftermarket ecu if you don't do further mods then what I have written down?

I don't know a hole lot about tuning and everything so it's all a learning curve for me

well its upto you to decide whether its worth it or not,

the stock ecus map is known to be quite rich, so going aftermarket for what you have will allow the cars tune to be altered to get around 20rwkw more, help make the car nicer to drive throughout the rev range and can help with a bit of fuel consumption, but that obviously depends on your driving style...

seeing as though you wanted 'a little more go' i think thats your only real option....

stock turbos are getting on towards 20 years old now so the word reliable should really be avoided here; especially if you want to push more power at the wheels then it produced at the flywheel when new 20 years ago.

If you want to make 240kw at the wheels relatively cheaply and reliably you can do so with:

-hypergear hyflow turbo (rebuilt stocker that makes more power) ~ $900

-nistune ECU $1250 for whole ECU + tune from Toshi

-Z32 AFM ~$300 new but you can get 2nd hand ones.

-Walbro 255 fuel pump ~$100

about 15psi on the stock injectors will make a fast responsive reliable R33

    • The spray cans were in the "Kiln" room whilst I was preping the parts,  so probably around 2 hours to get them warmed up, the kiln room has 3 small ovens running at 100°c, 3 medium sized ovens running 100°c, and the large one I used running at 80°c, the room itself was about 28°c, I also spent a bit of time taping up the parts in the room as well, and by the time I was done I would assume that the parts were around that 28°c As for power, I expect a couple of Killerwasps up high would be achievable with the current mods, I'm still running the MZR 2.0 intake and throttle body, and there is a slight mismatch with the 2.0 intake (smaller) and 2.5 intake ports (larger) on the head, this intake is matched and specifically designed to fix this issue with the ports mismatch, the throttle body is also a couple of mm larger, OEM is 65mm, the Bosch is 68mm In the end it will look "prettier" than the molded plastic thing that is the OEM MZR 2.0 intake As for the LSD, it's the OEM Torsen which works fine for what I use the car for, plus, basically no maintenance apart from the occasional oil change
    • I was at Tunehouse in Marrickville (great team over there really know their VR's) , and I spotted this Very clean R35.  
    • Mate , I have the same issue right now with the exhaust noise , if you can tell me what your local guy did , I'll talk to my guys and see if they can do the same. Power is good but it just too loud when put it down. 
    • The other trick I've found with wrinkle black is to put the can in hot water for a bit to warm the paint up, and to pre-heat whatever you're painting. It'll be interesting to see if you pick up any power with the intake, following with interest. Got a proper lsd for this?
