they sound like cars from a lower category :/

That's what I was getting at, but we'll have to wait and see til they're at full noise I guess...

Eric Boullier appointed Racing Director. Read the official McLaren Mercedes press release here: http://tinyurl.com/nwwhfba

they're probably not going to ever hit the redline except in qualy. An article I read ages ago suggested that the fuel flow limit and power delivery characteristics of forced induction mean 12,000rpm is more likely to be the operational ceiling rather than the mandated 15,000rpm limit. They also have significantly less engines to use this year, so lower revs seems likely.

But having heard a few more videos, I'm starting to think they sound alright anyway. Sure, they're no V10, but those days are long gone...

I'm liking the looks of the cars too. Eg Force India looked crap in photos with that big black dong out the front, but it looks pretty good on the track. At least there's variety and innovation being shown which is interesting, and to me they all look better than the stepped noses from last year. Well, maybe not the Zoidberg Lotus...

It's very unlikely I know, but there's potential for a smaller budget team to have jagged a design edge thanks to these regs.

Also hoping the William livery isn't just for testing - it looks good in blue.

I'd wait till the next test or race day before writing the new engines off. I'm sure they are not going flat out yet. There must be plenty of engine and car tuning going on there. I know the engines have probably done thousands of hours on engine dynos, but thats different to taking it out on a track.

After all they went from 1:27's on the first day to 1:24's on the second day (unless my memory has failed me :) )

Just shows you how much they were holding back day 1

Last year they were sub 1:20's, with all the aero differences I dont expect them to get near last years times, but there is probably still a bit left in them

Or maybe I'm just saying this stuff so I will convince myself I like the new sound lol

If you can hear some turbo whistle maybe it will make up for it

To be honest, sounds like the honda nsx with an exhaust at high revs (obviously without the turbo :-) )

Whilst both sight and sound play a massive part in formula 1, for me its more the fact that this is the elite level of driving and pushing limitations on engineering and producing the quickest cars going around a circuit.

So just personally speaking, sound of the engines were nice but nothing worth getting too upset about as long as they still go fast. I am sure there is a WHOLE (yes i used caps!) lot of seconds to be stripped off these laptimes as we progress throughout the season. I think "Ve Tool" even said that in a recent press release.

    • That looks good, but I think you're going to need much beefier side skirts now.
    • They are daft and there's a reason it never caught on. Steering feel? We don't need no stinking steering feel!
    • I gotta pull you up on this. It's driving me crazy. A shutter is something that closes, like over a window or in a cmera. The word you want is shudder. That LSD is clearly f**ked. Take it to a diff shop and get it disassembled and examined by an expert. YOu might have plates welded together or something equally crazy.
    • Define "starting to fail". Wy not just rebuild them?
    • Check the Nistune doco. There are a few assumptions being made here that might not be valid. I will list the things that occur to me: Base map. Base map for what? Base map for Z32? Then the cranking pulse width is probably wrong for an RB25. The extra 500cc of capacity might well be enough to prevent it from catching. Base map for RB25? I don't think you can load one of those into a Z32. You have to just make the settings correct for an RB25 in the Z32 base map. That is either K or the TIM to get the pulsewidth right. Loom. You bought a loom for an RB. And you plugged it into a Z32 ECU. Did you make sure that any iwre differences were swapped. From memory, there's at least a couple. And as per the others, I would suggest making sure that the fuel pressure is correct while cranking and that the injectors are actually flowing as expected. They really must come out and go on the bench, unless you do find that you have messed up as per above points. I would also suggest watching in Nistune to make sure that everything is reading correctly. That the correct binary flags are raised at the right time (like the crank signal), that there's no stupid values in K or TIM. That you have not got mismatched firmware for the ECU and/or a wrong image loaded.
