Dear SkylinesAustralia members,

First off, let me say that I understand your need for speed, I know the thrill that speed and noise can create. I also understand why racing at night might appeal to some people, and some will even argue that it's safer racing at night due to less traffic on the road. My message is to those people who are racing at night on our touristic routes in the Brisbane area.

Please understand that people do live on these touristic routes and in those rural properties, they work just like most of you, they get up at 05:00am and go to work every day, and when they get home they are tired and just want to relax and enjoy the peaceful environment that is the national park. A thing that these people do not enjoy, is getting woken up at night because of the excessive noise that some racers generate when they drive on the roads.

Not only are these people a danger to themselves (which is their own business) but they are a danger to others on the road. My wife had a very close call with a racer one night who almost collided with her as she drove home in one of the corners on Mt Nebo Road that has the dividing barriers. The racer decided to overtake his "mate" who was driving on the correct side of the road. Overtaking in the wrong lane of a barrier-divided corner is one of the silliest things that a driver could ever do on mountain roads. Had my wife not driven slowly as she usually does (45), she would have had a collision with this racer. Had this driver been a good driver he would have noticed her headlights reflecting on the railing which means oncoming traffic. We have pictures of this car as well as number plates from the security camera recordings of our home.

Aside the dangerous driving is the excessive noise that these cars generate. Having done plenty of tuning myself, I can tell a fast car from a slow one, and an emptied out muffler (or sawn off muffler) do not make your car any faster. If anything, it will make it more expensive to run, and in some cases even less powerful. Noone enjoys a loud car except the attention-seeker who drives it.

Yesterday night there was a car that sounded like a trumpet (the 1600CC kind), he wasn't fast, just loud, and lonely too. The only "tuning" this pov could afford was sawing off the muffler of his car, which did 0.0 in regards to performance. It did get him noticed though, by residents and police alike. This noise woke up everyone on our street, and as a result we are now grumpy: Thanks to trumpet-car, we are now grumpy; grumpy hillbillies who own and operate chainsaws for fun and drive big rusty 4x4's that can easily block off your escape route, which is not that hard on a 19km straight road without exits or ways out: All that's needed is me calling my hillbilly friend up the road and we pince you in from either side. We also know the area and if required can drive these mountain roads faster in our 3 tonne Ford than you can in your Scooby Doo.

So here's the deal : Want to race on touristic roads ? If you do it safely, and don't do silly things, we won't stop you. If you want to drive silly, spend a day at the race track for a race day. Don't saw off mufflers and don't cut out muffler parts, and don't use excessively loud pipes that don't do anything performance wise except get your car noted and make the local hillbillies angry. Basically, don't turn your car into a 110 decibel hillbilly-magnet. This way the hillbillies can get undisturbed sleep and you can continue driving over our wonderful and fun roads.

The second message is : Don't ruin the experience for your fellow drivers ! If you know someone who owns a loud car, tell them to put back some sense on their car and muffle them. If they want to performance-tune their car, there are plenty of other ways to get performance from your car than to mess with the exhaust. Hillbillies have no issues with racers that drive safely and quietly.

This way, we can all live together, quiet racers can still race at night over the beautiful roads and the hillbillies will stay in their beds. Please pass this message on to your fellow drivers and racers on other forums and facebook, so this message gets heard.

Respect,
A Hill Billy from Mt Nebo

So you thought posting your chainsaw murdering ideas on a public forum was a good idea? :P

I don't think a loud exhaust is any reason to kill someone... but I guess things are different up Mt Nebo way. I will gladly stay away from you inbred Hillbillies.

A thought out post in SAU and a reasonable request

I would consider your posts in this thread when responding

I agree multiple forums is the way to spread this information

Will be interesting to see where this leads if/when unreasonable people start responding.

I admit that some people go above and beyond to be tards. But just keep in mind just because someones car is a little loud doesn't mean we are hooning. A bigger exhaust is for better air flow no point having power if it can't escape

Performances cars are generally always going to be noisier then a little getz etc. In saying this my hat off to you sir for thoroughly thinking and writing up your post, at no point did you come here and claim and point fingers calling us hoons, so good on you.

I enjoy a mountain run as much as anyone, the reason we choose night time is because we can do the speed limit and not get stuck behind a unsafe/ unpredictable driver doing 20-30kms under the speed limit on road that is not suitable for over taking.

Kind regards,

Someone who just enjoys a peaceful drive over the mountains.

I agree with Boz, we will be far more open to discussion if threats hadn't been used.

I also understand that this is a generis message you have posted on many forums and I doubt you will come back to check any replies.

Personally Boz and Cadmoon I do kinda agree with him his not talking about your general drivers like me and you but more your P plater flat cappers in the drift specs.

Shouldn't be too hard to find this guy after describing the corner he lives off.

Pretty stupid imo to threaten random car owners with bodily harm for just having a loud exhaust, especially when your roosters probably make more noise than the car. If I lived local I would think about cruising down the road with my own chainsaw, or shotty, just in case (in the hope you would) enact your stupid plan. Unfortunately people that threaten others over the internet are unlikely to follow through with the violence they promise, as they are cowardly hiding behind their anonymity.

Realistically Hill Billy, it is your own fault for purchasing a redneck farm on a main thoroughfare.

At no point has he threatened to harm anyone the only threat he has made in his post is that if you wanna be an idiot and going flying around up there bouncing limiter him and his mate will block the road off until the cops arrive.

No point turning into angsty teenage girls. I think we should do our best to repect the people up the mountain. And to be honest I do not believe this guy deserve any harassment or to be targeted for anything. He has come and calmly and has thought out his post in a pleasant matter just asking us if we go up the mountains just to take it easy and lay off the excessive zaust noise near their property not much to ask really. He's not posting here saying we're all a bunch of hoons who deserve to have out cars confiscated or that we deserve to have cops harrassing us, like some people have in the past.

My issue, and I believe Boz's as well, is the threats of bodily harm. The issues he raises may be valid and he may be talking about P platers and other idiots but he still came onto SAU and felt the need to issue threats.

I'm not advocating ANY for of harassment of anyone and other than the threats he made it is a fairly well reasoned post with some valid points. As Boz said, if you come on a forum and issue threats don't expect many serious responses.

Depends how you wish to read it, at no point did he mention blocking people in and calling the cops. The threat of angry 'hillbillies' blocking you in on a quiet road in the middle of the night with chainsaws and trucks could be viewed as a veiled threat of bodily harm.

They were two separate things if you read his post poperly. He said it's not wise to piss people off like that not that they would use them.

I can understand how annoying it is to having to listen to buzz boxes keeping you up at night. There was a time my neighbors kid would drive his loud poxy WRX up and down the street non stop. He would leave for a few minutes, pull up in the drive way, idle for 5 minutes with his stereo on and then piss off just to do it again. Once he did this from 10pm, to 4am. I shit you not. I was pissed off. I wanted to follow him one night and drive him off the f**king road so he hit a tree and die.

People imagine some pretty messed up stuff when they are annoyed and angry doesn't mean that they will do it. Its just a release and sometimes saying it or fantasizing it removes the need to do it in real life.

Regardless of the intention of the threats it was still a poor decision to threaten people. I can understand the frustration he must feel about noisy cars driving past late at night (I've been up at the lookout when a bunch of Honda boys showed up and you could hear them coming for 15 minutes) it isn't a new thing to driver over Mt Nebo at night and putting up with it is part of living on the mountain.

    • Surely somebody has one in VIC. Have you asked at any shops?  Is this the yearly inspection or did you get a canary?
    • This is where I share pain with you, @Duncan. The move to change so many cooling system pieces to plastic is a killer! Plastic end tanks and a few plastic hose flanges on my car's fail after so little time.  Curious about the need for a bigger rad, is that just for long sessions in the summer or because the car generally needs more cooling?
    • So, that is it! It is a pretty expensive process with the ATF costing 50-100 per 5 litres, and a mechanic will probably charge plenty because they don't want to do it. Still, considering how dirty my fluid was at 120,000klm I think it would be worth doing more like every 80,000 to keep the trans happy, they are very expensive to replace. The job is not that hard if you have the specialist tools so you can save a bit of money and do it yourself!
    • OK, onto filling. So I don't really have any pics, but will describe the process as best I can. The USDM workshop manual also covers it from TM-285 onwards. First, make sure the drain plug (17mm) is snug. Not too tight yet because it is coming off again. Note it does have a copper washer that you could replace or anneal (heat up with a blow torch) to seal nicely. Remove the fill plug, which has an inhex (I think it was 6mm but didn't check). Then, screw in the fill fitting, making sure it has a suitable o-ring (mine came without but I think it is meant to be supplied). It is important that you only screw it in hand tight. I didn't get a good pic of it, but the fill plug leads to a tube about 70mm long inside the transmission. This sets the factory level for fluid in the trans (above the join line for the pan!) and will take about 3l to fill. You then need to connect your fluid pump to the fitting via a hose, and pump in whatever amount of fluid you removed (maybe 3 litres, in my case 7 litres). If you put in more than 3l, it will spill out when you remove the fitting, so do quickly and with a drain pan underneath. Once you have pumped in the required amount of clean ATF, you start the engine and run it for 3 minutes to let the fluid circulate. Don't run it longer and if possible check the fluid temp is under 40oC (Ecutek shows Auto Trans Fluid temp now, or you could use an infrared temp gun on the bottom of the pan). The manual stresses the bit about fluid temperature because it expands when hot an might result in an underfil. So from here, the factory manual says to do the "spill and fill" again, and I did. That is, put an oil pan under the drain plug and undo it with a 17mm spanner, then watch your expensive fluid fall back out again, you should get about 3 litres.  Then, put the drain plug back in, pump 3 litres back in through the fill plug with the fitting and pump, disconnect the fill fitting and replace the fill plug, start the car and run for another 3 minutes (making sure the temp is still under 40oC). The manual then asks for a 3rd "spill and fill" just like above. I also did that and so had put 13l in by now.  This time they want you to keep the engine running and run the transmission through R and D (I hope the wheels are still off the ground!) for a while, and allow the trans temp to get to 40oC, then engine off. Finally, back under the car and undo the fill plug to let the overfill drain out; it will stop running when fluid is at the top of the levelling tube. According to the factory, that is job done! Post that, I reconnected the fill fitting and pumped in an extra 0.5l. AMS says 1.5l overfill is safe, but I started with less to see how it goes, I will add another 1.0 litres later if I'm still not happy with the hot shifts.
    • OK, so regardless of whether you did Step 1 - Spill Step 2 - Trans pan removal Step 3 - TCM removal we are on to the clean and refill. First, have a good look at the oil pan. While you might see dirty oil and some carbony build up (I did), what you don't want to see is any metal particles on the magnets, or sparkles in the oil (thankfully not). Give it all a good clean, particularly the magnets, and put the new gasket on if you have one (or, just cross your fingers) Replacement of the Valve body (if you removed it) is the "reverse of assembly". Thread the electrical socket back up through the trans case, hold the valve body up and put in the bolts you removed, with the correct lengths in the correct locations Torque for the bolts in 8Nm only so I hope you have that torque wrench handy (it feels really loose). Plug the output speed sensor back in and clip the wiring into the 2 clips, replace the spring clip on the TCM socket and plug it back into the car loom. For the pan, the workshop manual states the following order: Again, the torque is 8Nm only.
