Greetings everyone.

Just got my R33 GTST back from the tuners an hour ago after a 3 hour drive home. Car was running great with the new turbine housing until I got home. It's breaking down on boost. It's jerking and popping/backfiring. Noticed my 040 is louder than normal and is making a constant buzzing noise that it didn't before.

Is it possible that it's on its way out or that its got really hot and over worked on this current 35C+ day?

Running 240rwkw

GTX3076R

Wolf 3d v4

Cheers

PS Tuners phone is busy, cant get a hold of him at the moment

I would suspect the fuel would be getting very hot on a long drive today, which would explain the noise.

The issue with the 040 is the fine mesh filter in the bottom, which is prone to getting blocked. There isn't much you can do with it if it is blocked either. Some have cut the mesh out but then there is no filtering on the pump. I would be getting a wideband on it, or dropping back in to your tuner to check the AFR's like Johnny alluded to.

Yes... but that was before your drive home, and before the breaking down. Something has changed since the tune by the sounds of it. Have you checked for popped cooler pipe joins? silicone has a bad habit of blowing after hard hot dyno time.

Had a similar problem recently at a track day with a Bosch 040 in tank pump, after about 3 laps I would get pretty bad fuel surge when revving out in a straight line even with a full tank, wideband showed it lean right out when this happened (up to 19 AFR). Also the fuel pump got noticeably louder as the day went on. Possibly due to the mesh filter being a bit blocked but I just replaced it anyway with a DW200 pump. I haven't driven it hard yet but noticed at idle fuel pressure now sits around 38psi whereas with the 040 it was about 30psi. I should be heading to the track on Monday so I'll report back if it fixed the problem.

Pump is probably 10,000kms old, never had any issues before but will definately pull it out and check the filter mesh.

Thanks fellas.
If it needs a new or bigger pump, am I able to change it without affecting the current tune?

I have had an 040 die, and yes it buzzed loudly before it did it.

The filter is kind of crap - It is NOT removable. You can clean it out a bit with brake cleaner and the like and put it back in. It's really very thin and there isn't much space behind it. I removed it (after cleaning it 2-3 times) and the damn thing died about 1km away. The difference between completely clogged and completely clean is very very VERY minimal (visually)

I never noticed my car do anything other than run until the pump flat out died. If you're way down on power, and banging and popping and backfiring, well I have a pump I can sell you ;)

I had a brand new 044 put into a VS2 once > started leaning out after 2 months. Hard wiring didn't solve it either. Flow rate check showed up 40% down at Unigroup Eng.

Stick a Walbro 460L in there and forget it. Best intank pump available for the $200 it costs.

From what I've read thats an E85 specific pump. I don't have access to that fuel unfortunately.

So did you go with that pump, Terry,or did you go down a different brand?

    • I've got a 2011 J50 that I imported six years ago. The unmodified factory AV system date and time has always been correct ( Japanese timezone of course ) up until last month. About two weeks ago, at engine start, the system wished me a happy new year ( in Japanese of course ). I can't think of anything that would make the system think that the date had changed, unless the GPS component has failed/reset somehow ? I checked the GPS reception in the system settings, and it can still see the satellites. Has any other J50 owner had this happen ?  It's no biggie, just annoying that it tells me the wrong date anytime I start the engine. 😅
    • Love following your adventures on IG, hopefully if you're still around in Japan when we visit again wouldn't mind going for a few beers with you (that's if you're keen on hearing how I hate Nissans).
    • ok so if i wanted to go 18's i would go for 8's  in front 30+ or 32+ off set at front and the back 9 would be ok? what offset should i aim for.. then can i do some  hunting for wheel rim choices..    If i get this - will this fit all around: Size: 18 x 8.5 +37 - n what tyres size tyre should i get for front n back?
    • Absolute f*cking nightmare. I had to take breaks constantly, and I was always pissed off when I got home. The line split in Italy on day 2 (we drove from the Netherlands), lol. Driving any narrow European town was... well, sh*t.   Appreciate it man. Here, I'll just drop a favourite from the load I took on Saturday.   I'll update here when things happen with the car, the thing is, with stock power and almost everything chassis-wise taken care of, there really are no problems. 268,000kms now and counting.
    • Ah! I actually managed to snag a lightly used set.... that aren't so suitable for me right now. They don't work on a GTT without some cutting or creative heat moulding. I thought about reselling them myself cause I didn't want to murder them, but it looks like I'm probably going to attempt to murder them/melt them because I may as well. @GTSBoy @PranK can somebody close this thread?
