Hey peeps,

Im doing a r33 turbo install on my NICS Rb20det soon.

As im sure you know the NICS ECU does not handle fueling too well and almost nobody can EPROM them so....

I will be needing some form of tuning mod, so i was wondering if you think i should go the SAFC and EBC route or go for a Wolf3d V4?

Costing of the components looks to be about the same but obviously the actual wolf install is going to cost a bit more.

any comments/recommendations/opinions would be appreciated

also any suggestions on who to get to do the install of both turbo and wolf?

cheers

i went the way of ebc and afc....over the wolf because i saved money on installation (myself) and got some stuff second hand....

tuning a wolf is more expensive aswell im sure....and with the boost control of a wolf i heard you cant control how the boost comes on like other boost controllers can.

does anyone have any experience with wolf controlling boost?

Yep, I have a Wolf.

I would recommend the Wolf, it allows fully control and customisation of the fuel, air, ignition, boost settings.

It also takes about 10 mins to install. Which ever way you go the car will need tuning (dyno time) and the Wolf is easy to tune.

I asked many about this and told a full ecu replacement is the way to go.

Go the Wolf!

Just getting used to mine but all good so far.

Goto www.wolfems.com.au & download V4 User Guide , it shows Boost control every 125rpm from 0 - 16000rpm! With boost cut options. :)

The other main advantage over SAFC/EBC is ignition control!

Oh yeah....& flick the "NICS" lol

With the Wolf Boost control I can only find a Valve Setting, which increases the boost depending on the value value. Is there another setting to set the actual Boost (PSI) for each 125rpm??

The boost cut is in PSI but then again it only drops it back to a Boost Valve setting

Just means you need to test it out with a few trips up and down the road.

only thing that worries me is that lots of the cars that have got wolfs have blown up....

Its all to do with the tunning, if the tunning is right then your not gonna blow your engine up. Its the same with any programable management system not just wolf. I have had 3 wolfs, version 3 and version 4 on my old rb20 and now version 4 plug in on my rb25 and never had any troubles.

if they were all the same price and installation costs the same what would you choose paul?

microtech, wolf, autronics or haltech?

nothing against the wolf but everyone didnt think anything of wolf until Ant started hitting big figures with his wolf....

im not trying to say im an expert but wolf ecu seem to be in the more less hardcore category of ecus, if you want serious power on any project i have seen no one has chosen a wolf.....why is this?

yeh i am thinking the wolf is looking the better option, however am i better to spen the money on a 32 rb20det install?

This would be great but requires me to run a whole new loom for it :)

Plus rip out the current motor (which is running fine atm)

So...im thinking ill stick with the NICS (i know its not the best engine ever made) and run the RB25 turbo, go the wolf install and see what i get from the tune.

SST the go for the wolf install/tune? What sorta $$$ would i be looking at?

ta

Its worth considering wolf v4 doesnt have sequencial injection. Where as your powerfc, autronics and microtech ltx12 does. Of the modified rb25s that have blown up this year so far, which ones have had wolf? Im sure the mortality rate of rb25s in the eastern states is not as bad.

    • I certainly fall into the annoyed camp, but glad to hear that if it's happening at low boost then I'm not likely going to blow a turbo and end up with metal shards in my oil. Just feels like it prevents me from really driving it without hesitation and "peak" performance. Wonder if it's the VCAM, it did an impressive job of shifting the torque curve and faster spool, but maybe now it's "too fast" and there's too much air for how open the throttle is.  Based on some other threads, will also do some reading on synchronizing the actuators. They are the default actuators that come on the Garrett's and I would think they would be set the same coming from the factory, but if the turbos don't actually work exactly the same way at the same time as previously mentioned, it would be worth making sure the actuators are actuating together properly
    • I went down this rabbit hole before, ended up sourcing a motor from the UK (I'm in Japan) which also didn't function correctly. With the original motor, I disassembled it and reassembled it and it works somewhat, sometimes. What I could deduce from all my screwing around is that there is calibration of the gears on the inside of the motor and two ramps on the main gear which activate switches that operate the motor and move the sunroof either to retract into the roof or tilt. Where I got stuck was that, it seemed in my case that one or both of the switches that are activated by the ramp on the gear did not always activate and thus the motor did not move, causing it to sometimes not retract or tilt (apologies, I've forgotten which way it didn't work.).  Of course this part is discontinued at Nissan now, it's the same part in the S15 but no other models. I also contacted the manufacturer of the component for schematics - forgot the name, they're based in Gifu - but they declined to share the information due to being bound by an NDA, sadly. Looking through my pictures now, it seems I last had a crack at this in 2022. See, I so kindly wrote "open" and "close" next to the switches. If you figure it out, please do tell me. Those little switches, with the red buttons may need to be replaced.
    • It says 300ZX, does that make it an Aus delivered car? Funny how back in the day I just couldn't care less about Z32's and these days I am just in love with them. Back when Nissan was into pushing the envelope. 🤣
    • Hi guys, just after some guidance with an R34 sunroof that has stopped working correctly. It still opens and closes perfectly fine, but it no longer tilts/vents up or down. As a result, the rear of the glass now sags a bit as it drops down slightly in order to retract into the roof, but now it can't pop upwards into a flush position. I’ve probed the pins on the back of the switch connector with a multimeter and it seems like both switches (for open/close and tilt/vent) still work correctly. Any ideas on what it could be, or where I should even start in terms of diagnosing? I'm sure someone's had this issue before but I haven't been able to find anything online relating to this specific issue, most of the issues are with the seals leaking or the motor failing entirely. Thanks in advance!
