my friend recently bought an mx6 for 10k, and only had it a few months, he has driven it around only about 6,000km, and so far his radiator has cracked, his side takns have leaked/cracked, and now his hydrolic something went. cant remember what its called but it drives the timing belt, so far he spent 500 on a radiator, then the side tanks were like another 300 or so, plus he had to do a service the oil and shit in the car was old as shit, and now he has to fork out 1700$ to fix the shit that happened with the timing belt, he is sick of the car, and wanted to buy a skyline since i had a gtst and was rock solid, but yeh i convinced him not to spend more money on his car and his going on my idea to get an r31, im buying one soon to, just wandering how they go, how they run maintenance cost, any one had major problems? im guessing being an inline 6 theyd be strong as like most others

they are great, strong and for the most reliable... the best thing is that most are owned by older people from new! a mate picked old up from the auctions for $1700 89' ser 3 250,000km but drives like new the only problem with his is the central locking is broken! the problems i've had are the auto trans slipping, diff went bang, and the rest is general wear and tear with any cars.. i'd say for value there brilliant, power its N/a so you can get it with minor $$ changes..

any pictures of nice examples of r30's or r31's?

if you have the time to go through the r30 skylines thread these quite a few pics of good ones in there, try www.r31skylineclub.com members gallary for pics of good r31s'...

Also check the cruise pics section on R31 Skyline Club site, here

Check the Victorian section.... we have the best cars (but im biased!)

The RB30 is pretty bullet proof.

The biggest problems they have are with things like the auto (especially series 3) and the diff, other than that, they are just a VL in a nicer body :D

Depends if your talking an import version or aussie version?

Speaking for the aussie versions: they are great.. i've owned two.. haven't managed to snap either of them. 1st one had done about 250,000km on original drivetrain and all fine..

2nd one (my current one) has done 315,000km - 2nd engine but the rest still holds together nicely. No major rust spots, electrical problems or anything like that.

The best thing i reckon, is that they have got what you need (power steering, aircon, EFI) without the complexities of having a lot of shit you don't.

Ive had my 1990 Series III for about 2 1/2 months, it has 293,000 on the clock and its been on gas all it's life. The head gasket went the other week, but it was a cheap repair cos it had been well taken care of. Make sure you pick one up that's had regular services as they run reasonably quiet even if overdue for an oil change. From what ive been told, the autos are a bit leaky (mine leaks around the reverse switch) but other than that they're reasonably strong beasts. If you dont want the VL "crumpledore", these are the beasts to go for, partly cos they're a bit lighter too

If you can, go for an import R31, no competition, oldskool looks, with WHAAAAAARP PSSSSSHHHH WHAAAAAARP PSSSSSHHH power. I drive an 88 Skyline Passage GT silvertop, blitz bov, 3 inch exhaust, BUT I drove an old aussie SIII before I got this one, NO COMPETITION MATE! If you've got the cash, get the import, and see if you can go a RB25DET, you will be ****ing laughing. Nothing like pulling up to a 98 civic, 'hahahah, shit car mate, can't afford anything newer'. Give it a squirt, whaaar WHAAAAAARP PSSSSH WHAAAAARP PSSSSHHHH WHARP! It's like hitting ****ing warp speed and just watch the guy in the civic shit himself. So fun, but if you just want a transporter, I can get SIII skylines for $2500, with 125,000 on the clock, sometimes have some come through as low as 60,000kms, drop me a line at [email protected] if you want to talk more. The best thing about the R31's, the cops never touch you, the craziest shit I've done, they just give me a look and keep driving,

My most memorable was seeing a old 89 pulsar and a 92 lancer going each other, there was 3 lanes into two, I was in the lane merging, saw them playing silly buggers, floored it, (in a stock SIII aussie mind you), had to BRAKE to avoid running up the back of the lancer, pulled into the third lane, gunned it, went past BOTH, pulled back in, and seeing both of their faces in the mirror shitting themselves seeing this big beast go past both like they were still standing there, so fun.

i just got myself a '88 gtsx 2dr r31 .. picked it up for 8 .. i seen just as good examples with alot of gear on board for less in japan b4 freight for about 5grand .....

mines auto .. but very clean ..genuine 160,000 ks on the clock as of today .... engine is very reliable.. and will hopefully be better with my mods .. gtr bits and wolf3d etc etc

go the old school door .. they rock

yea i'm a member sky031 ... i just couldnlt get my usual screen name on the r31boards .. so i went with Smoke55 .. everywhere else i'm Angry or AngryMatt lol .. i was at the mystery cruise hungover like a bastard

Cheese

Matt

    • I'm actually not sure - I think it was "Stealth Performance" (It really is near impossible to find a FEMALE 1/8BSPT to 1/8NPT male at ALL) but having the thing leveraged on a 90 degree angle on a small aluminium fitting is not too smart. Also in not too smart, I've drilled out the center of the broken fitting so there's maybe 0.00001mm of thread to bite into, so yeah. I may have to get it drilled/tapped/plugged entirely. Given I could conceivably tap a thread/adapter/pressure line in any point in the oil system I suppose it's feasible to run a line to the Nissan Sensor to keep the dash working. Do these exist in AN fittings and the like? Like an AN fitting that has a NPT (or other?) thread as well for putting a sensor in?
    • I would agree.  There will be an amount of boost you could run safely with an otherwise factory system, but it would be low enough to not be worth the cost.  And if you are reliving your 20s, you know a 'little bit' was never enough. Personally, if I didn't want to spend the money, then stick with NA bolt-ons, and maybe a tune.
    • Fuark, at least the motor survived. What brand was the fitting that snapped?
    • Wrong question. There's no point in spending the rather large sum of cash and effort to add turbo, without taking it to the "sensible" limit of the motor itself. If you have to upgrade injectors, etc, then so be it. That is a tiny fraction of what it will cost you to turbo it.
    • Measure voltage at the starter solenoid terminal when the key is at start and it has clicked. If it is really low, then the suspicion falls on the ignition switch (contacts or wiring thereof) as causing a voltage drop instead of sending enough volts to throw the solenoid all the way to engage the starter itself. If it is a decent voltage, then the suspicion is on the solenoid. Might have s horted coil, or might hva dirty contacts. Rip the starter off, dismantle, clean up contacts and inspect winding. It might not be possible to see if there is a short in the winding though. I have a spare starter here that I could measure the resistance of the coil, as a guide to about what it should be, if you need a comparison. <parts hoarder>No you cannot have it.</parts hoarder>
