so after i fixed all the boost leaks,i found that the adjustable cam gear bolts came loose. started dialing them back in to spec with test runs that i did 4th gear full boost to where it was and even better so under 3.5k to full boost with more adjustment in them.

while testing i heard a loud backfire and engine stalls, tried to start it after awhile and i only get a loud backfire under cracking.

fuel pump works and plugs just changed now, compression tested and is fine

if valves were gone pretty sure that would have shown up on compression

i'm just curious know what it could be with out taking it apart :P

I'm guessing the key in the exhaust cam came off and you put the cas back on in the wrong spot.

Yeah something along those lines is my next bet but seen as the car ran ok until it popped I thought maybe cooler pipe. Sounds like something could have happened to the CAS otherwise but

yea i was thinking it could also be something like that, will give it a once over tomorrow

other wise will swap out the engine when i can be bothered :glare:

Seeing as it was running and then stopped makes me think the exhaust cam pulley may have either jumped a tooth or wasn't done up right and retarded itself.

Would a cooler pipe blown off cause it to backfire on startup? When I blow one off (lol) it will still fire then just die.

Swap out the engine? Because you don't know whats wrong with it?

:S

i work on the principle of expect the worse yet hope for the best and i think i was pushing my luck with air leaks fixed on a responsive untuned motor.... think i'll leave it at that and let trent dail the rest of the adjustment in as shown in the pic attached

Matt wins a prize on this one!

all i have to offer is much cyber #homolove

had a spare so it runs fine now and the beauty of it is these engines are about that price range :P

the reason it broke is because i took off the cam gear cover and did the bolt up as per usual, where as when i dialed in cam gears for the first time i had the cover on making the process back and fourth much longer.

the gear cover has a 4mm spacing to the cas mount doing it up tight with no cover or spacer is its downfall, so i made a spacer out of 3mm flat bar

    • Bit difficult to follow. Have a look below and see what the standard R32 layout was like. Note there was a restrictor in place immediately before "turbocharged pressure control solenoid" that, if removed, magically got you 1 bar boost.
    • I might be way off the mark here.. there must be a T junction under the manifold. That takes manifold pressure through a check valve prior to the T, one side splits out to this bleed off orifice, the other straight to the wastegate actuators.
    • Carrying out some engine due diligence before my first drive in a 260RS that has been in storage for 10+ years, and found two lines that are susposed to be plumbed into the boost control solenoid. One of the lines (the wastegate boost supply line) to actuate the gates, had a bolt in one end blocking it. The other line (main boost signal line) from the very rear of the intake manifold (RB26DETT) and runs up to the boost controller had this pill in the end of it as seen in photos. Other than the obvious (T28 Ceramic turbos might well be cooked)  Can anyone shed any light on if there is any validity at all with this mod, bleeding a constant fixed rate of manifold boost pressure off through this 3mm hole?  Is it deliberate?  Was this a 90s Jap mod done to RB26's? Or has someone just fitted this without any idea of what happens to ceramic T28s if they are not gate controlled?
    • This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too. I've never imported but I reckon it would make me a little nervous, so the more info the better.
