So,

I've had my (stockish) GTR for about 18 months now and obviously love it.

I've had a few hiccups but nothing too major given that during this time it has been a daily driver.

Since buying it I've had a major job change and now live and work in Katherine NT (remember this)


At the moment I have a gearbox niggle in the form of a worn input shaft bearing and this is the birth on my dilemma.

Im considering taking the GTR off the road and starting to do some semi major jobs.

top of the list being

Gearbox Rebuild
Oil pump
turbos
ECU

The dilemma I'm having is due to the major job change ... I'm skint :P

The way I see it is my options are.

1. Buy a shit box, The R ceases to be my daily

Pros:
more major maintenance can be done by me at my own pace

extend the life of the car by not racking up the kms

Cons
not a daily and potentially could sit and gather dust if the job becomes "too much"
If i do get in to deep theres not enough "rescue services" in town and than means expensive trips to darwin

Fears
it just sits there. as money and time dry up and it becomes a dust collector

2. continue to have the R as a daily

Pros:
Driven not hidden (huge for me)

Cons.
cost of running and maintaning is higher due to more kms
upgardes and work needs to be done professionally as the car needs to be on the road

fears .... the looming engine rebuild


I'm just after some input from members.... Serious input and thoughts only.

I say, Get shit box but dont do major work to the R

Once you have a second car, you can on occasion daily the skyline.

Replace turbos, do gearbox, fuel system, ecu and leave it at that for a while until you do have enough cash.

The job wont be so big that you feel yourself being overwhelmed and it is small enough that you can feel special when you have completed the job.

Lots of ppl use dailies down here nowadays compared to 4 yrs ago Cutty. It's a common thought pattern if one can afford to do it.

Another pro is that one can appreciate the performance car all the more, each time you operate that right foot.

I dailied my GT-R. $100+ per week on petrol (driving from one end of Sydney to another in traffic, 3hr commute per day) on $45k p.a. salary was not fun. Get a cheap runaround if you drive a lot.

Does your car need a rebuild? If not, just keep driving it and save. Depends on how you drive.

Get a daily and enjoy the GTR on the weekend.

Just make sure the daily is still a bit of fun (Golf GTI or similar)

It's cheaper in the long run, the GTR will keep longer and you'll really enjoy the experience of the drive.

Manual Pulsar does the trick ;) Plus you won't be worried about it parked anyway (compared to the GT-R).

Yep, definitely keep the GT-R for weekends, makes you appreciate it more. Driving it everyday made me get over it, I wanted to sell it or burn it a few times. Now it gets driven once a month, love it again.

I do kind of look at it though and think the cost of a daily is nearly new turbos :-( . I don't drive much on a daily basis . Work 4 days on four days of and its a straight run at 130 kph

    • Hi, SteveL Thank you very much for your reply, you seem to be the only person on the net who has come up with a definitive answer for which I am grateful. The "Leak" was more by way of wet bubbles when the pedal was depressed hard by a buddy while trying to gey a decent pedal when bleeding the system having fitted the rebuilt BM50 back in the car, which now makes perfect sense. A bit of a shame having just rebuilt my BM50, I did not touch the proportioning valve side of things, the BM50 was leaking from the primary piston seal and fluid was running down the the Brake booster hence the need to rebuild, I had never noticed any fluid leaking from that hole previously it only started when I refitted it to the car. The brake lines in the photo are "Kunifer" which is a Copper/Nickel alloy brake pipe, but are only the ones I use to bench bleed Master cylinders, they are perfectly legal to use on vehicles here in the UK, however the lines on the car are PVF coated steel. Thanks again for clearing this up for me, a purchase of a new BMC appears to be on the cards, I have been looking at various options in case my BM50 was not repairable and have looked at the HFM BM57 which I understand is manufactured in Australia.  
    • Well the install is officially done. Filled with fluid and bled it today, but didn't get a chance to take it on a test drive. I'll throw some final pics of the lines and whatnot but you can definitely install a DMAX rack in an R33 with pretty minor mods. I think the only other thing I had to do that isn't documented here is grind a bit of the larger banjo fitting to get it to clear since the banjos are grouped much tighter on the DMAX rack. Also the dust boots from a R33 do not fit either fyi, so if you end up doing this install for whatever reason you'll need to grab those too. One caveat with buying the S15 dust boots however is that the clamps are too small to fit on the R33 inner tie rod since they're much thicker so keep the old clamps around. The boots also twist a bit when adjusting toe but it's not a big deal. No issues or leaks so far, steering feels good and it looks like there's a bit more lock now than I had before. Getting an alignment on Saturday so I'll see how it feels then but seems like it'll be good to go       
    • I don't get in here much anymore but I can help you with this.   The hole is a vent (air relief) for the brake proportioning valve, which is built into the master cylinder.    The bad news is that if brake fluid is leaking from that hole then it's getting past the proportioning valve seals.   The really bad news is that no spare parts are available for the proportioning valve either from Nissan or after market.     It's a bit of a PITA getting the proportioning valve out of the master cylinder body anyway but, fortunately, leaks from that area are rare in my experience. BTW, if those are copper (as such) brake lines you should get rid of them.    Bundy (steel) tube is a far better choice (and legal  in Australia - if that's where you are).
