R35 Gtr "normal" Brake Noise?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

How much squeaking/screeching is normal with these cars?

I'm told by Nissan that brakes are not covered under warranty because the car is a super car (I think that's very easy to challenge legally, but I'll leave it for now).

My GTR has been making a lot of noise at low speed and when coming to a stop. Nissan insist that this is normal due to the iron in the brakes...but I'm not so sure it is. Didn't have this issue with my old car. Frankly it is a bit embarrassing.

I know I keep comparing to other companies lol, but when I had the same problem with my Range Rover Sport, JLR changed the brakes under warranty and the sound vanished and they're still going strong....had the same issue with old BMW X6, BMW did the same. Changed the brakes, sound vanished. Incidentally, every time it has happened, it happens early on in the car's life (less than 5000kms).

Maybe I'm just a bad driver and kill brakes?

Thanks all.

There will be some level of rattles coming from the brakes (over bumps), but not squeeling or squeeks - unless they are fouled by something between the pad and rotor.

Have you checked for cracks in the rotors? Any cracks (if you have not tracked it) will be warranteed - but you will need to write a letter to Nissan Australia in order for them to approve it. Most dealers will push back.

Thank you kindly for the advice.

I am getting them thoroughly checked on Saturday, so I'll take pics and then write to Nissan (I'm assuming head office?) if there is an issue there. I think that might be the case, as haven't had this problem in the past.

Cheers.

My car did it too. Its because they've glazed over. You've probably been city driving so brakes aren't getting a work out. Theyre basically racing brakes. Take your car through the hills or get it up to speed and jump on them a few times. Itll clean them up and shouldn't have a problem until they build up again

They're right about the higher iron content causing brake noise. The more aggressive racing brakes are noisy as faark especially when cold. Generally they chew the shit out of rotors too but that's the compromise of the stopping power required to pull up the big heavy beast!

There are some lubricants that go between the pads and the piston and the pad guides that can help with noise but they need replenishing pretty often as the extreme heat in brakes dries the lube pretty quick. Back when VT Commodore came out (no comparison I know!) but they had bad brake noise, disc wear and disc warping, we used to glue the pad to the piston to stop it moving and causing noise. The original pads were also very high iron content, they released a revised pad with a lot less iron again as a noise/wear/heat reduction.

We just had a customer replace his R35 rotors with AP Racing ones and EBC Yellow stuff pads (modded with power upgrades) and no noise issues city driving, pulls up like crazy.

With new cars, remember it takes a bit of time to bed in the pads to the rotors, first few thousand may be noisy but they should settle in.

A few high speed stops should take care of them.

Hey guys, yes this is normal behaviour if you are not working the brakes. Drive the car how it should be driven and there will be no noises..! remember not to leave your car sitting around after you wash the wheels, drive it and get those brakes working. The high iron content in the pads will cause the discs to rust and bind to the pads. Not that this has happened to me but it is common and I have heard of it happening to some owners.

Hi GTRPSI, just a quick question. You mentioned in your last post you had a customer install AP Racing J Hooks and Yellow pads.

Do you work for a workshop in Melbourne. ?

I used to have this set up on my 2010 GTR and they were awesome.

Can you get this kit for the 2014 GTR or know of the best place to get them?

Cheers

We are agents of RDA/EBC pads so we supplied him with the Yellow Stuff pads, customer got the AP Racing rotors and hats as a kit from O/S, he had a mate fit it all up for him.

I did a bit of reading on the pads. Thy say the business.

I thought I might of had them last time old my 2010 GTR but I am not sure now. I know they were yellow but that could be another brand also?

What is the cost for a set of pads for a 14 GTR?

I feel your pain. I had the same long fierce EEEEEE...... squeal, tried new pads & rotors doesn't seem to help. Until i tried quality aftermarket pads, like endless MX72 semi street pads... The brake still make noises but it's more due to metallic compound in the pads which actually sounded rather cool like a true sports car. Having said that, every car is different aftermarket pads might worth a try. Quality aftermarket pads works better and cheaper than oem ones.

    • It was a great, but typical track day, and some VB was ingested at the night time debrief 🤪
    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.

    • Unsolicited advice? Keep the engine as close to stock as you can. Nothing wrong with adding some boost and making a little more power, but given where you are, you really don't want to try to make it into a monster. I can't imagine the roads are up to it, and the lack of locla support when it grenades will be a ball ache. FWIW, If there is a dyno around that you can access, then brand new injectors are a good idea, which will lead you to (at least) putting a Nistune in it, which will allow you to put an R35 AFM on it, all of which will make it possible to make it much much nicer to drive and live with.
