I am going to need new shoes for my R34 GTT,

It comes with Stock R32 GTR RIMS,

Does the 245 in 245/50R16 mean the width of a tyre in mm?

Can I use a tire as large as 245 width? or will it look bad / wont fit? I want a solid parallel fit no angle due to too large/ too small tire.

Whats a common tire size people buy? 225? 235?

Thanks

To answer your question - yes to width of tyre size for 245

Stock r32 gtr - 16x8 +30 wheel, Tyre 225/50R16

I'm not sure why you want them on your 34GTT. 18's look so much better.

Can you use 245's on the 32 GTR rims - yes.

I've not tried the combination of R32 GTR rims on a 34GTT so not sure on flush fit but I can say they will look small and gappy around the circumference.

245s will look horrible on an 8" rim. Quite baggy. 225 is correct and works well at 50 profile. 235 is a little too tall at 50 profile (longer gearing) and a fair bit too short (shorter gearing) at 45 profile. 245 will be a lot too tall at 50 profile. not as bad in 45, but still not quite right - as well as being baggy anyway.

Tyre manufacturers rate this size for use between 7 - 8.5 in wide tyres, perfectly in spec... although stretch/stance-fairies may dislike it.

Variance in speed is only +3%, about the same as most people get jumping to common 18" wheel sizes

245/50/R16s on my GTR a few years ago.

^ That picture reminds me of all the HQ Kingers I grew up with with 265 tyres on Dragways bulging out all over the place. Cool in the 80s. Things have changed. The only reason you get away with it in that photo is because we're talking tyres with tall enough sidewalls to take the abuse. You wouldn't get it to work with a 35 profile tyre.

I think there's a big difference between "stretch/stance fairies" and those of us who see baggy sidewalls like that as being incorrect fitment. The 245 tyre will probably provide worse handling and grip than the correct 225 size just from the sidewalls being mechanically bent out of shape, regardless of the extra rubber on the road.

Don't get me wrong, I've done it too. I ran 225/50 on 6.5" GTSt rims, which is about the same level of wrongness. It was OK, but it wasn't great.

    • How dare you sell your unreliable Skyline and buy a reliable, Toyota/Yamaha car with a strong gearbox, torsen LSD and Toyota reliability. At least you won't need to worry about oil pumps, big catch can, oil restrictors, blowing off power steering belts, sheering off 3rd gear, failing ABS relays/pumps, etc.
    • Hope you aren't too sore after that one, might take a day or 2 to notice yet and I guess it is a loooooong drive home. On the bright side, tube frame front end is a thing at superlap, right?

    • The chart of front pressure to rear pressure (with one being on the x axis and the other being on the y axis) is not a straight line on a typical proportioning valve. At lower pressures there is a straight line with one slope, and at higher pressures that changes to a lower slope. That creates a bend in the line at that pressure, called the knee point. If you do not change the proportionng as the pressure gets higher, you will suffer excessive pressure (at one end of the car or the other, depending on which way you look at the proportioning action) and then get lockups at that end. The HFM BM57, from my memory of previous discussions, is based on the BM57 from a different car (to a Skyline), with a different requirement for the location of the knee point and the distribution of pressure front to rear, and so is not a good choice for an upgrade on a Skyline. Here's a couple of links to some old posts, one from here, one from elsewhere. A lot of it pertains to adjustable prop valves, but the idea is the same. There are plenty of discussions on here about this issue from al the many years of people wanting a cheap/accessible option. https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/ https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/
    • Yeah dunno why johhny posted that here with no context, just post on FB/insta bro where he put it up?  Laine had an off at T4 during Thurs prac, he's ok, car is less than perfect, they are done for the weekend, he can fill in the rest. Bando also binned it like 100m up the road.
