My mates in the process of building an RB20DET powered boat

I thought that was pretty cool for something different.

Hes already got the engine and is working on it now..

Hes puting a rebuilt and hiflowed T04E on it with bigger injectors and a huge FMIC.

I pissed myself when he first told me and thought he was playing around... but hes serious cause i went round and he had the boat there and the engine pulled apart.... should be fun when its done :D

don't you mean a 300ZX?

both... just ones bigger than the other :(

as for cooler... no idea... i have no idea how boats work now how the engines need to be setup... he tried explaining it to me and it went over my head :)

What kinda boat?

On ebay a while ago there was an rb30 (carby) all three of em. plus alot of work, i think the figure was around 180hp or kw at the propellor:p on one of those little single person racing things.. the Y shaped ones. That thing would hook

Yeah, what sort of boat?

If its a ski boat, it will effectively ruin the boat and make it drive like crap. You need instant and enormous amounts of torque in a boat, from standstill, thats how you pull skiiers up. Thats why almost all boats using inboards are V8's - Mine uses a Holden 308 and it can sure boogie. I couldn't imagine being pulled up by something that took 3 seconds to get any power, it would also be a piece of crap to try control while trying to pull a skiier up.

On the other hand, if its a rear mount speedboat with no intention of skiing, wakeboarding or other related water activities, it could be a very interesting job.

I'm planning on twin turbo'ing my boat, just imagine the sound of a 5 litre V8 with no muffling, basically straight through 3" pipes from each V, while spooling up two turbo's - you'd be in two heavens :)

Imagine? There was a twin turbo 454 with open pipes that turned up at one of the dams we used to frequent. It was a friggen unit, had a 3 speed auto behind it too... boogied reeeeeal hard pulling skiiers up (I have no idea how they didn't have their arms torn out of their sockets), then you'd see it almost idling along at like 50 knots next lap around. I think from memory it was called Far Canal or Far Kme or something along those lines... whatever it was, I remember thinking "how appropriate" :)

Revhead, we have an event down here called the Southern 80 where the whole competition is which team can pull a skiier along an 80km distance up the Murray River.

Most of the boats end up having things like twin T88's and bigger on monster 454 and bigger blocks. I think the record was in the mid 30 minutes to complete the entire lap, with a skiier behind you! If I'm wrong someone please correct me here...

But man..... words can't describe it, I've got a handful of pictures of these monsters from this year here:

I saw a similar boat and setup at racepace last year when i was there to get a tune. But it was a twin turbo 350 chev pulling close to 1000hp. Looked like the guy had spent all his $$ on the boat coz he a a shitty old xf tow car.

lmao nope its not going to be used for anything like that... tis more just a project thing... hes had a few in the past few years including a 10sec RX3 and some orange XW fairmont with XY GT running gear and stuff rebuilt... i liked the ford better of the 2... looked horn with these huge deep dish 18" rims...

wont be towing anything on the water... just a fun thing.

    • Nah that is not actually a lot. Just painting my GTR frontend and the little bits to make sideskirts/nismo flare pieces work correctly/fit on the sedan/mount up correctly came to about $7000. Is it a lot? Sure. None of this is economical. Economy would be shelling the car and buying a 2010 Corolla to commute in. The perspective of all of this is different.
    • I have the 2025 build re003s’ on my 06 XT Forester Turbo and I quite rate them for street wet and dry
    • I don't see any issues here. I've been saying all along this is a big job, the price reflects that.  When the car comes back perfect I'm sure it will feel like money well spent.
    • Remember, take original quote. Double it. Then add a bit more. It's how any project goes.
    • So, I started this repair and got as far as "fixing" the holes with some fibreglass. God all those years working on boats came back quickly. I decided I'd reach out to some rust guys just to see what they would say about it. I came across a guy about 40 mins away and went to see him. He said the windscreen needs to come out, that there might be some more bits around the windscreen and he'd quote them at the time. But his quote was $300 to remove and replace windscreen and $3k for the damage he can see. He said he could respray the roof for $1200 and the bonnet for another $800 (somebody has previously rattle canned it, its horrendous). This is $5300 + any small additional bits. It's a lot, I get that and the name of one of my fave youtube channels 'Not Economically Viable' comes to mind.  I'm not being financially rational, but I've taken him up on the quote. He's opening a new shop in November with more room, so we're waiting for that. I'll leave the currently missing headliner out until then. I'm looking forward to it being fixed and having the paint looking nice again (lots of clear coat issues on the roof too). / flame suit on.
