Fire Season - Hazard Reduction - El Nino Will Bring What?

Recommended Posts

RFS Crews from Illawong, Leura, Katoomba, Valley Heights, Faulconbridge (where I belong) are burning off fuel in our backyard tonight. They'll be there until midnight after which another shift begins.

So if you guys smell smoke tomorrow!...

Maria has been serving out pineapple buns from Burwood lol

At least my fire plan is up to scratch already.

At least your guys are quite active.

The back burning to date around me in Kinglake (my opinion) is woeful. You reckon they'd be on it like rat up a drainpipe since black Saturday, ensuring (at least ) residential and rural areas are better protected by the same arrangements you guys are undergoing.

Black Friday was horrific for you guys at Maryville and Kinglake.

Communication is a lifesaver when it's operating. Tragic when it's not.

And when at Kinglake there are so few ways in or out of there, communication is critical.

I carried out an experiment 36 hours after the HR (hazard reduction) during AF (after fire) stage.

A week ago, I bought myself one of these 'thingys'.

Our property of 3950 sq m yes, does include this...

So with my IR Laser Thermometer I decided to check temperatures around the block.

Most places had cooled off. But...

This unobtrusive position came up as 91.9 degrees.

And a few smoking spots registered above 250 degrees. Interesting?

For high accuracy with an IR gun you need to set the emissivity for the material being measured, and will read differently depending on light conditions. Might also be a distance effect? I'm not sure how much difference all that makes tho. Do you think the values seem about right?

We were lucky. We went to the beach that day and couldn't get back in till the following Wednesday only to find everything gone. Lots of lessons could have been learnt by the fire authorities; In reading the weather, support services, emergency procedures, communication, police controls and communication.

It seems the authorities still need to learn. Given the lancefield Fire - again they didn't read the conditions. Hope the token effort of fuel reduction plans isn't compromised because of the poor planning at Lancefield.

The fuel reduction in your backyard is immensely important.

Regarding heat spots, we had ash pits in the ground that were scorching hot for weeks.

    • Maine Coone, did look at but to big and fluffy As for performance dogs, we had Mals at work, performance dogs are fun to watch, but, way to much work for this old rooster
    • Yep, it was only an option on the Q50 Hybrid.  Same in Japan as far as I know. And doesn't use a centre diff like the Suby's do, so not the same as the WRX.  But it also isn't a reactive AWD like other Nissan AWD vehicles are, eg. Murano/Xtrail/etc.
    • You should have got a Maine Coone then. Only thing is they're big. But so cool, and just like a dog. Or, just get yourself a high performance dog. That'll teach you for wanting Parkour indoors 😛
    • Are you thinking of Bens R32? I don't remember if his went through the bonnet itself, but it went through the chassis rail. Brad (RISKIN) bought it, and turned it into a track car. It's funny how anti people are of Jim Berry now. I remember when I pulled mine out (during an engine change) and inspected it and found it cracking badly. At that point in time so many people were even on SAU, were so pro Jim Berry, and that was after Bens GTR exploded his quite publically.
    • That's one of the reasons I got that breed, they look weird, the other reasons are they small, they are very vocal, and run around like they are on crack, I didn't want a breed that just sits around, these two are like kids on red cordial  My daughter has one, and it's a laugh riot, constantly doing Parkour around the house, sits on her shoulder, plays catch, and constantly runs around the house taking turns chasing the dog around, her Bermese though, just lays around with constant bitch face, and just looks on in utter disgust at the cat and dog playing together
