Hi all,

Just wondering how many of you out there has ever had an engine go on you, you know, big stuff like cracked pistons, ring lands, rod failures, valve gear problems, head gaskets, etc etc.

If you can state generally what level of tune you had (rwkW) and why you think it happened, it would interesting to know.

Looking forward to the horror stories!

Freebaggin.

At the 4 6 & rotary nationals in Feb this year, I blew up

my RB26 engine in the R33 GTR.It had around 340 rwkw using

bolt ons like HKS 2540s,FMIC,etc, but the engine itself was

untouched. I did 2 back to back runs, which was silly cause it was

too hot & the oil system must not have been able to keep up.

It ran 11.5 & 11.6 and on the second run developed a loud rattle.

When we pulled the engine down, the no. 4 conrod bearing was

completely missing except for a wafer thin bit left welded to the

crank! It was amazing the whole lot didn't let go through the traps. Also the crank was bent 2 thou & one of the pistons had been bouncing off the head.Keir wilson(R32 GTR 10.5fame) bought

this engine, rebuilt it and ran 10.6 at drag combat with it!!

So, providing they dont throw the rods out of the block, they can

be rebuilt quite easily. On the same day in Feb, Keir was not so lucky with his R32.Oil starvation through the traps welded the crank to the block & KABLOOEEE.

I remember grabing Brenton's Adelaide Clutch ute & hooking down to help him.One of the safety guys came over & passed me a handful of bits off the track. One of the bits was a bit of the block

with san (part of the nissan) on it! What a mess.Other than the Head the whole thing was scrap metal.

Now we both have OS 3 litre engines with larger, baffled sumps.

Hope it dosen't happen again, but when you rev over 9000 rpm

nothing lasts forever.

:flamed:

I did a couple of valves in cyl no. 2 when the conrod snaped and left the piston at the top... LOL The next rotation the valves opened and they hit the fused piston.... The mechanic who rebuilt had to drill the piston out of the cylinder it was that well fused....

My main point is that with mods the cars run well, but i was doing 230rwkw all the time and the conrods were standard... Now their a Nismo part... Got them fairly cheap....

I totally forgot my point.

Anyway i did all the bottom end but didnt wait for the rods to come. I got too hasty and re built my motor with the original 100,000km conrods and they lasted 3 months... So thats not bad... But you need to have a weak point in every motor.... Because there's no such thing as bullet proof.....

NOTE: Build it stong and give it heaps when you wear it in so the parts bed in hard and are ready for a hard life....

  • 1 month later...

Engine 1: 145 RWKW T3/4 High Flow Trust FMIC..... Standard Fuel Pump....ang bang rattle rattle.... too lean....

Engine 2: Sheared the cam belt tensioner bolt and lunched the head.... I've been told someone may have replaced the cam belt idler bearing and overtightened the bolt??

Engine 3: Still running hard with 180 RWKW... new owner hasn't blown it (yet)

BIG chunk of #1 piston - down to the ring land - parted company with the rest of the piston, and played pinball inside the combustion chamber. Also broke the top ring and bent an end of it upwards. Amazingly, not outwards, because bore is totally unmarked.

I suspect a dyno run had it lean out and detonate at the top end (fuel pump incapacity), but no proof.

Had a mild build - T3/T4 hybrid, FMIC, only about 115 awkW.

    • It is a kunfine Android screen . Does anyone know the wirering diagram of the fuga ??
    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
