Hi All,

Another DIY for those interested

Requirements:

- New bush (brass or OEM will suffice)

Tools:

- 10mm socket with an extension

- Ratchet

- Hammer

- Block of wood (is this even a tool)

- Bench vice

Difficulty: Low

1) Start by unscrewing the shift knob

2) Remove the ashtray and the screw from behind it

3) Grab the shifter surround from the bottom side and pull it upwards

4) Undo the bolts securing the shifter ring (possibly the wrong term)

5) Remove the rubber boots and sleeves as shown (including the shifter ring from above)

6) Remove the boot that covers the hole for the shifter where it enters the gearbox to reveal a big circlip

7) Using circlip pliers remove the circlip from the opening and lift the shifter out

8) Put the old bush in a vice and bend it till it pops off

9) Clean the surfaces and apply some gearbox oil to the ball where the new bush will seat

10) Find a nut that matches the thread of the shifter and screw it onto the end of the shifter

11) Put the bushing on the end of the shifter and place them both against a block of wood

IMG_2530_zpsoz5rhjqu.jpg

12) Using a suitable hammer, hit the nut hard and the bushing should pop into place

I took the opportunity to replace the boot that covers the top of the gearbox as mine was ripped. It may be worthwhile changing yours while you have it apart.

Installation is reverse of removal - Be careful as the circlip can be quite painful

Bonus stage - Paint the shifter ring if you have time - No one will see it but if you're like me, it will annoy you.

I decided to replace the OEM bush with a brand new one and do away with the brass one. I might go with the brass one in the future but for now brand new OEM is fine.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

Great write up thanks

This is actually on my list of things to do today

Thanks Reuben! hope it helps

Great write up. I've added this to the tutorials list.

Thanks Christian! Are you able to assist with the title change? Should be shifter not s-hifter lol.

Great write up Jacob!

Cheers Josh :)

Hey man, I ain't got no vice, how hard was it to take off old bush?

It's not too bad - See below (could also use a pair of vise grips)

If you got no vice. With a fine tooth saw just cut around the old bush to weaken it then pull off with pliers.

This would certainly work but you could melt it off because it's only plastic

Try not to destroy it (although saw and fire will) just in case you have problems with the brass bush or don't like the feel.

Also just to add as a sidenote.

Removing a shifter with a brass bush can be kind of difficult as the brass bush can dig into the insert slightly. If this is the case and the gearstick wont pull out, give it a few sharp taps with a mallet and it will become free.

Exact problem I had with mine when I took it out.

Thanks for the tip!

Nice and detailed, thanks

What are the pros and cons of the solid shifter bush?

Pros: shifter feels slightly more precise and firm but not a big difference.

Cons: tiny bit more vibration and noise transmitted.

imo i would just stick with a nissan replacement bush

    • There's probably an underlying issue with the A/C system too. I recently fixed mine, now it's fully control by the Haltech and car's factory HVAC controller  Have a squiz here:
    • And by the way, I've also checked the ECU diagnostic numerous times and got a bad O2 sensor code and initially an Ignition Primary code, which is why I replaced the O2 sensor and all the ignition components (coil packa, plug and loom). No codes have been coming up lately despite the ongoing issue.
    • Hey pber13, unfortunately still no luck. At this point the following has been done with little or no success: - Spark plugs replaced, gapped to 0.8mm - Splitfire coilpacks installed to replace originals - Replaced Ignition Coil/Coilpack harness with a new genuine nissan one - New fuel filter - Replaced AFM/MAF sensor - Injectors have been thoroughly cleaned with an online flush (without removing) - Upper engine and inlet decarbed - blew tons of black smoke out, cleared the carbon deposits from the top of the engine and exhaust.  - IACV removed and thoroughly cleaned with carburettor cleaner - O2 sensor replaced with new and genuine one -  Smoke test revealed no vacuum leaks - Healthy compression test of 160psi across all 6 cylinders Overall the car does run a lot smoother now, no backfires between gear shifts like it did originally... but the rough idle when warmed up is still there. It may not even be a misfire but simply a rough idle. Seems crazy to me that so many people have had this issue and seemingly no one has gotten to the bottom of it, or at least never bothered to post if they did! Hope you have more luck than I did pber13, I'm at a point now where I'm just going to try to ignore it unless it gets worse. Would love to fix it but I've genuinely run out of ideas of what it could be.
    • I got the full frenchys kit too. Really awesome kit. Easy to install my only complaint was the hardlines I think could be routed differently (I modified mine) but I realise the kit needs to suit multiple applications. This was the hard lines before I modified them. They were touching the wastegate pipe. I ended up reducing the distance between firewall and first bend. The made it so they tucked along the frame rail.
    • Deeve, I don't suppose that you've made any progress on this? My Stagea has the exact same problem, and just like you, I've read through as much as I can online, with no real progress. My car isn't throwing any codes at all, which is a little frustrating. I've changed plugs, checked the wiring and harness. A new MAF gets here next week, but I'm not hopeful it will solve the issue.
